Chapter 303: Chapter Three Hundred And Two

Damon turned away from the smoke and the supply wagons. He walked with long strides across the dusty yard. He headed straight toward his command tent.

He pushed the canvas flap aside and stepped into the cool, quiet space of his command tent. He walked around his desk and sat down in his chair. He leaned forward, resting his arms on the polished wood. He stared at the map of the capital city and the roads leading to it.

A few minutes later, the canvas flap opened quickly.

Kade walked into the command tent. The aide looked very serious. He marched to the front of the desk and bowed deeply.

"My Lord," Kade greeted him respectfully.

"I have something to report," Kade announced, his voice clear and urgent.

Damon did not look up from his maps immediately. He kept his eyes focused on the roads.

"Go ahead," Damon replied smoothly, his voice calm.

Kade stood up straight. He placed his hands behind his back.

"We have done a thorough search of the entire camp, General," Kade reported, detailing the strict lockdown procedures they had executed. "We checked every tent, every wagon, and every shadow."

Kade paused for a brief second. He looked at Damon.

"And we found one more spy that we overlooked," Kade stated firmly. "I think you will know her."

Damon stopped reading the map. He slowly raised his head. His eyes locked onto his aide. He frowned slightly, his thick eyebrows pulling together in deep confusion.

"Her?" Damon asked out loud. He was genuinely puzzled by the gender.

The spy they had chased the night before, the one who died near the fence, was a man. Most of the spies caught in the camp were tough, rugged men. A female spy inside a strict military base was highly unusual.

Kade nodded his head slowly. He confirmed the fact.

"Yes, General. It is a woman," Kade explained. He took a step closer to the desk to reveal the spy’s specific identity. He watched the General’s face closely.

"She was the one who tended to your wounds," Kade said softly, dropping the shocking information. "When you got injured during the training session with Captain Robert. She was the newly hired camp medic."

Damon’s jaw froze.

His mind instantly flashed back to the dusty training arena. He remembered sitting on the wooden bench with a bleeding shoulder. He remembered the young woman in the clean white apron approaching him with a small wooden basket. He remembered her soft voice and her gentle hands applying the strong alcohol and the green healing balm.

He realized how incredibly close the enemy had gotten to him. She had been standing right next to him, holding an open wound. If she had wanted to, she could have easily slipped a deadly poison into his blood instead of the healing balm. He had been blind to the threat.

Kade saw the cold realization wash over the General’s face. He continued his urgent report.

"We found out she was the one who actually supplied the White Hemlock root powder to the dead spy," Kade explained, detailing her specific role in the sabotage. "She was the inside contact. She used her position as a medic to smuggle the toxic roots into the camp, claiming they were for medicinal herbs."

"How did you catch her?" Damon asked coldly, his voice dropping into a deadly, freezing tone.

"She couldn’t escape during the lockdown," Kade replied proudly. "The gates were sealed shut. We caught her trying to bury the remaining toxic roots near the back fence to hide the evidence."

Damon leaned back in his chair. He crossed his arms tightly over his broad chest. His mind was working rapidly, piecing together the enemy’s complex network.

The enemy had planted multiple spies. They had a man to poison the grain and a woman to supply the poison and monitor the General’s health. It was a very expensive operation.

"Did she say who her master is?" Damon demanded smoothly. He needed a name. He needed to know exactly who was pulling the strings from the shadows of the capital city.

Kade let out a slow, frustrated sigh. He shook his head side to side.

"Not really, General," Kade admitted, looking disappointed. "She didn’t give us a specific name. We interrogated her harshly, but she was terrified to speak his actual name."

Kade looked at Damon, offering the only clue they had managed to extract from the terrified woman.

"But," Kade added, his voice lowering slightly, "she did say that her master is a member of the Ryde family."

Damon’s entire body went stiff.

The name hit his brain like a loud iron bell.

The Ryde family.

He immediately thought of Lord Ryde. He thought of the arrogant, ambitious nobleman who sat on the royal council.

"Lord Ryde?" Damon asked out loud, his voice vibrating with certainty. He was ready to march into the capital and arrest the nobleman himself.

But Kade quickly shook his head again, destroying Damon’s theory.

"I don’t think so, My Lord," Kade disagreed politely.

Kade stepped closer, eager to share the specific details of the interrogation.

"I asked her that exact question," Kade explained clearly. "I asked her if her master was Lord Ryde, the Earl. And she said no. She said she hasn’t even met him before."

Kade looked into Damon’s eyes.

"She said it is someone else," Kade revealed. "She said her master is Lord Ryde’s brother."

Damon’s eyebrows pulled tightly together in confusion. He stared at his aide, his mind hitting a solid brick wall.

Damon uncrossed his arms. He rested his large hands flat on the desk. He murmured softly to himself, his voice full of bewilderment.

"But he is the only son," Damon whispered into the quiet tent.

He searched his extensive knowledge of the noble families in the capital city. He knew the lineages, the marriages, and the inheritances perfectly.

"Lord Ryde is the only son of the previous Earl," Damon reasoned out loud, looking at Kade. "I never heard about a brother. The Ryde family tree is very clear. There is no hidden brother holding power in the court."

Kade looked equally confused. "That is exactly what she said, General. She was terrified when she said it."

Damon’s eyes burned with calculations. The mystery was deepening. If Lord Ryde had a secret brother pulling the strings of a treasonous plot, the danger was far greater than he had ever imagined. This was not just a simple assassination attempt; this was a shadow war.

Damon stood up slowly from his chair. He placed his hands flat on the desk, towering over the maps.

He looked at Kade, his face returning to its cold, terrifying mask.

"Look into this," Damon ordered smoothly. His voice was a deep rumble that left no room for failure. "Find out everything you can about the Ryde family history. Check the old birth records. Find this hidden brother."

He pointed a strict finger toward the direction of the holding tents.

"And make sure she doesn’t try to kill herself," Damon commanded firmly, referring to the female medic. "Strip her of any hidden poison capsules. Keep her tied securely. We need her alive to testify when we finally drag this hidden master out of the shadows."

Kade snapped to attention. He bowed very deeply from the waist, showing his obedience.

"Yes, my lord," Kade replied firmly. "I will secure the prisoner and begin the investigation immediately."
