Transmigration: The Tyrant General Can Hear My Thoughts
Chapter 304 - Three Hundred And ThreeChapter 304: Chapter Three Hundred And Three
But Kade did not turn around to leave. He stayed exactly where he was.
Damon noticed that his aide was still standing there. He slowly raised his brow. He looked at Kade, waiting for him to move.
Kade cleared his throat very softly to break the heavy silence.
Ahem.
"Another report, my lord," Kade spoke. His voice was no longer sharp and urgent like it was when he talked about the spies. His tone was much softer, slower, and slightly hesitant.
Damon frowned slightly. His eyebrows pulled together. He felt a small spark of exhaustion. He had already dealt with poisoned grain, sick soldiers, a dead spy, and a hidden mastermind all in one single day. He wondered what other terrible disaster had happened in the camp.
"Another one?" Damon asked. His voice carried a tired, heavy edge. He crossed his strong arms over his coat.
Kade quickly nodded his head. He saw the tired look on the General’s face and wanted to assure him that this report was not a military threat.
"Yes, General," Kade replied smoothly.
Kade moved his right hand. He reached deep inside the inner pocket of his military uniform. He searched for a moment before his fingers found what he was looking for.
Kade pulled his hand out. He was holding a small, round object wrapped in a piece of clean, dark red velvet cloth.
He took a slow step closer to the desk and held the wrapped object out toward his commander.
"The goldsmith has finished the commissioned work, My Lord," Kade explained softly. He looked at the wrapped item in his hand. "He finished it much faster than expected because of the extra gold we paid. He sent his most trusted apprentice to deliver it securely to the camp and it just an hour ago."
Damon’s arms slowly dropped from his chest. The stressful thoughts vanished from his mind in an instant.
He remembered exactly what he had commissioned. He remembered ordering Kade to find the best goldsmith in the capital city to create the perfect apology gift for Camilla.
Damon reached out his hand.
He gently took the velvet-wrapped cloth from Kade’s fingers. The object felt surprisingly solid in his palm.
Damon looked at the cloth resting in his hand. Then, he looked up at Kade’s face. Then, he looked slowly back down at the cloth. His heart began to beat a little bit faster with a strange, nervous anticipation.
Very carefully, using his fingers, Damon pulled the edges of the velvet cloth apart.
The fabric fell open.
Resting perfectly in the center of the velvet was a beautiful, shining gold locket.
The locket was made of pure gold. It was polished so perfectly that it reflected the warm light of the sun rays like a tiny mirror. It was shaped in a smooth, elegant oval, attached to a delicate but strong golden chain.
Damon stared at the shiny metal. He slowly turned the locket over to look at the front cover.
The goldsmith had followed his instructions perfectly.
Engraved deeply and beautifully into the smooth gold surface of the locket was a short sentence. The letters were carved in an elegant, flowing script.
Damon read the words silently in his mind.
Camilla loves Winston.
As Damon read the specific name carved into the gold, a wave of memories flooded his brain.
He remembered the terrible, burning jealousy he had felt when he first heard her whisper that name in her sleep. He remembered how his chest had ached, thinking she was secretly in love with a handsome, wealthy nobleman.
And then, he remembered the ridiculous humiliation he had felt when he finally learned the absolute truth.
He let out a very small, soft laugh.
Heh. Heh. Heh.
It was a warm amused sound. The laugh rumbled gently in his chest, washing away all the stress of the day.
A wide, soft, and unguarded smile broke out across Damon’s face. His dark brown eyes sparkled with affection.
He slowly raised his thumb and gently pressed his finger against the smooth gold surface. He rubbed his thumb very softly and slowly over the engraved letters of Camilla’s name.
The metal felt cool, but his heart felt warm.
"She is going to love this," Damon thought to himself, his internal voice filled with a deep, happy confidence. "She misses her pet so much. When she sees his name carved in gold, she will know that I actually listened to her. She will know that I respect her feelings and her family, even if her family is just a cat."
He kept smiling as he moved his thumb to the small, delicate golden clasp on the side of the locket.
He pressed the tiny clasp. The gold cover popped open with a very soft, satisfying click.
Damon looked inside the open locket.
On the left side of the locket, there was an empty space waiting for a tiny portrait of Camilla. But on the right side, resting perfectly inside the circular golden frame, was a detailed miniature painting.
Damon stared at the tiny portrait.
The artist had done an excellent job based on the descriptions.
The painting showed a fat, round, fluffy bright orange tabby cat. The cat had large, wide, innocent green eyes. The artist had perfectly captured the thick, orange fur and the distinct, cute white paws that looked exactly like small white socks. The cat in the painting was sitting lazily on a blue cushion, looking spoiled and happy.
Looking at the fat, fluffy animal, he only felt a strange, deep sense of fond amusement. This lazy little creature was the most important thing in his wife’s world.
Damon’s eyes softened.
He murmured out loud to the empty air of the tent. His voice was gentle, warm, and full of understanding.
"I can see why she loves him so much," Damon murmured softly, keeping his eyes glued to the tiny orange cat.
He truly meant it. He was so captivated by the cute painting that he completely forgot he was not alone in the room.
He slowly lifted his head. He looked at Kade, holding the open gold locket out toward his aide so Kade could see the tiny painting inside.
Damon’s eyes were filled with fascination. He smiled warmly at his soldier.
"He’s so cute, isn’t he?" Damon said out loud. His deep voice carried a tone of simple, honest delight.
