Chapter 305: Chapter Three Hundred And Four

Kade blinked his eyes rapidly. He stared at the General in shock.

Kade’s brain stopped working for three seconds.

It was the one of the most bizarre, out-of-character moment Kade had ever witnessed in his entire military career since the General started having affection for Camilla.

Kade quickly swallowed hard. He did not want to ruin the General’s rare, happy mood. He did not want to point out how strange the situation was.

Kade forced a polite, agreeable smile onto his own face. He nodded his head slowly, looking at the tiny painted cat in the locket.

"He is, my lord," Kade agreed softly, his voice was respectful. "The artist captured his white paws perfectly."

Hearing Kade’s respectful agreement, Damon’s brain suddenly snapped back to reality.

The warm, soft fog of romance instantly vanished from his mind. He realized exactly where he was.

The warm, happy smile dropped off his face in a fraction of a second. His eyebrows pulled sharply back together.

Damon realized he was acting out of character. He felt a sudden, sharp spike of embarrassment hit his chest. His ears turned a very light shade of pink in the light.

Damon cleared his throat very loudly to cover his embarrassment.

AHEM.

The rough sound echoed in the quiet tent.

Damon snapped the gold locket shut with a loud, sharp clack. He moved with fast, rigid speed. He placed the gold locket back into the center of the dark velvet cloth. He folded the edges of the cloth over it quickly, wrapping it securely so the locket was hidden from sight.

He placed the wrapped bundle carefully into the inner pocket of his military coat, keeping it safe near his chest.

Damon stood up. He placed his hands behind his back. He forced his voice to return to its normal, flat, commanding tone, acting as if the soft, smiling moment had never happened.

He looked at Kade with cold, serious eyes.

"Is that all?" Damon asked strictly, dismissing the topic of the locket entirely.

Kade immediately stood at attention. He kept his face blank, ensuring he did not show any amusement at the General’s sudden embarrassment.

Kade nodded his head firmly. "That is all, General."

Damon nodded slowly. He thought about the letter he had written to her last night. He had secretly hoped that she would write him a letter back. He had hoped she would send a quick note asking him to come home safely, or even a sarcastic note complaining about his absence. He just wanted to see her handwriting. He wanted to know she was thinking about him.

Damon looked back up at Kade. He tried to make his voice sound casual and unbothered, but a heavy trace of hope slipped into his tone.

"Did the lady send a correspondence?" Damon asked softly, his eyes searching Kade’s face for good news.

Kade’s face fell slightly. The aide felt a sharp pang of sympathy for his commander.

Kade slowly shook his head from side to side.

"No, General," Kade replied honestly, his voice quiet. "The courier returned from the mansion last night, but he brought no letters from the Lady. And no other messengers have arrived from the estate today."

The tiny spark of hope inside his chest was instantly, violently snuffed out. A deep weight of crushing disappointment dropped onto his broad shoulders.

He lowered his eyes to the desk.

"Oh," Damon let out a very soft, quiet sound. It was barely a whisper, but it held a massive amount of quiet pain.

He slowly rubbed his fingers gently along his sharp jawline, feeling the rough stubble of his beard. He stared blankly at the map, his mind spinning with anxious thoughts.

Why hadn’t she written back? Was she ignoring him? Was she happy that he was not coming home for dinner?

Damon tightened his jaw. He spoke out loud, directing the question to Kade, but mostly asking himself.

"Is she angry with me?" Damon asked softly, his voice full of worry. He continued scratching his jaw slowly, looking incredibly stressed.

Kade thought about how the Lady Camilla usually reacted to things she did not like. He let out a slow sigh and decided to give the General his honest, practical opinion.

"Looks like it, my lord," Kade spoke softly, nodding his head. "The lady values your presence. If you send a letter saying you are choosing to stay in the camp instead of returning to the mansion for dinner, she is likely to feel ignored. She might assume you are intentionally avoiding her."

Damon closed his eyes tightly. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers.

"This was what I was afraid of," Damon said to himself. His internal voice was a mixture of deep frustration and regret.

He had lied to protect her. But in doing so, he had accidentally made her furious with him again. He was trapped in a terrible situation. He could not tell her the truth about the ambush without terrifying her, but his lie was going to destroy her trust in him when she finds out herself.

He dropped his hand from his face. He opened his eyes.

He will have to fix her anger tonight. He has to return to the mansion, give her the golden locket, and beg for her forgiveness.

Damon looked at Kade and gave his final orders for the day.

"When the sun begins to set," Damon commanded smoothly. "Ready my horse. I need to ride the mansion tonight."

Damon leaned slightly forward, locking his eyes onto his loyal aide.

"And," Damon added firmly. "Make sure you rest. Arrive at the mansion early tomorrow morning. We have to leave very early."

Kade understood the gravity of the orders. His face turned serious. He immediately stood at attention, placed his right fist firmly over his heart, showing his unwavering loyalty to the General, even unto death.

Kade bowed very deeply from the waist.

"As you wish, my lord," Kade replied firmly, his voice steady and brave. "I will have everything prepared."

Damon gave a single, sharp nod of his head. He watched Kade turn around and march quickly out of the command tent to begin the final preparations.
