Chapter 317: Chapter Three Hundred And Sixteen

Camilla looked down at her dress.

"I know," She replied softly. She shrugged her small shoulders slightly. "I thought I could endure it. I wanted to look proper for the palace. But it turns out I couldn’t."

Damon reached out and gently touched her arm.

"Don’t do things that you aren’t comfortable with," Damon spoke. His voice was completely serious. "Not for the royal court, and not for me. Your comfort is more important than their rules."

Camilla looked at his face. She felt a very warm flutter in her chest. He was truly a very good, protective man.

Camilla nodded her head, accepting his words.

Then, her mind quickly shifted back to the reality of the day. She needed to change the situation and take control of the battlefield before the battle even started.

Camilla spoke. Her voice became very calm.

"Can you tell the driver to take the secondary road to the palace?" Camilla asked directly, looking right into his eyes.

Damon stopped smiling. He frowned slightly. His eyebrows pulled together in confusion.

He knew the roads around the capital city perfectly well. He knew exactly what she was talking about, but he did not understand why she wanted to go that way.

"Could there be a reason?" Damon asked carefully.

Camilla did not want to tell him about her plan. She did not want him to know that she was actively planning a tactical maneuver.

"Nothing," Camilla spoke smoothly, waving her hand as if it were just a random, casual idea. "Let’s just take that route today. I feel like seeing different scenery."

Damon stared at her. He knew she was hiding something, but he also knew the physical condition of that specific road.

"That road hasn’t been used in years," Damon explained, his voice full of practical concern. "And it’s very bad. It is full of deep holes, large rocks, and overgrown tree branches."

He pointed a white-gloved finger toward the main gates of the estate.

"After the King made a new, smooth road to the palace five years ago," Damon continued, "everyone left for the new road. The secondary route is completely abandoned. The carriage ride will be very bumpy and uncomfortable for you, especially in that dress."

He wanted to protect her from a painful, rough journey. He wanted to take the main road, even if it meant fighting assassins.

Camilla looked at him. She knew he was right about the bumps, but a bumpy ride was much better than riding directly into a concentrated death trap.

Camilla took a tiny step closer to him. She looked deeply into his dark brown eyes. Her gaze was serious, firm, and full of certainty.

"Just trust me," Camilla spoke softly.

The three simple words hung in the cool morning air between them.

Damon looked at her determined face. He remembered the promise he had made to himself. He remembered that he trusted her more than anyone else in his entire life. He knew she was a brilliant, capable woman. If she wanted to take the bad road, she must have a very good reason.

Damon let out a long, quiet sigh of defeat. He surrendered to her wish.

"Okay," Damon agreed smoothly, dropping his resistance. "I will tell the driver."

Camilla’s face instantly lit up. A bright smile broke out across her face.

She was so happy that he had listened to her without fighting. She did not hold back her joy.

Camilla squealed softly.

She stepped forward quickly. She threw her arms up and hugged him tightly. She wrapped her arms securely around his shoulders, pressing her body against his chest despite the hoop skirt.

"Thank you," Camilla said happily.

She lifted her head slightly. She leaned up and pressed her soft lips directly against his cheek. She gave him a very quick kiss on his skin.

Damon froze for a fraction of a second. The sudden, public display of affection surprised him. He felt the soft pressure of her lips and the warmth of her hug.

Damon laughed.

It was a very deep, rich sound that rumbled loudly in his chest. He wrapped his arms around her waist, returning the hug warmly for a brief moment in the middle of the busy courtyard.

After the short pecks, Camilla stepped back, smoothing down the front of her dress.

Damon smiled at her one last time. Then, he turned his body and walked toward the front of the carriage to tell the driver, Hugo, about the sudden change of route.

Camilla stood alone near the carriage door. She watched Damon talking to the driver and Kade.

As she stood there, her mind began to run through her tactical plan.

She knew the hidden assassins were currently waiting in the trees along the main dirt road. They were expecting the General’s carriage to roll by at any minute.

They will take the secondary route to the palace because no one uses that road anymore, the assassins will not be waiting there. They will bypass their trap and this will heavily disorganize the assassins. They will wait for hours on the main road, and the carriage will never show up."

She pictured the confused, panicked enemy spies realizing they had missed their target.

When they get to the palace safely without a single scratch, Damon can attend his important royal council meeting without bleeding or fighting in the dirt.

But Camilla was not just planning to escape. She was planning to destroy the enemy completely. She knew the assassins would not just give up. They had a job to do.

"When we are coming back to the mansion this evening," Camilla planned, a dark smirk touching the corners of her lips. "The enemy will realize we took a different path."

She calculated their movements perfectly.

"Because they will not know which road we will take to return home," Camilla’s concluded, "the assassins will be forced to split their numbers. They will have to divide their group into two. Half of them will wait on the main road, and the other half will wait on the secondary road."

This was the core of her strategy.

"By splitting between the two roads," Camilla continued, "they will be heavily reducing their numbers."

She looked at Damon’s back. She looked at Kade’s strong, capable posture.

She knew that Damon and Kade were planning to use themselves as bait today. They were planning to fight a massive group of killers all by themselves. It was a suicide mission against twenty or thirty men.

"But if their numbers are cut in half," Camilla finalized, "If we only face ten or fifteen men instead of thirty..."

She clenched her hands into tight fists at her sides.

"It will make it so much easier for the three of us to take them down properly," Camilla promised herself silently. "I will not let Damon die on a dirt road today. We will slaughter them all, and we will come back home alive."

Camilla relaxed her hands. She put her polite, sweet smile back onto her face.

Damon finished giving his orders to the driver. He turned around and walked back to the carriage door. He held out his white-gloved hand toward her.

Camilla placed her hand in his. She lifted the heavy skirts of her blue silk dress and stepped gracefully up into the carriage.

Damon climbed in right after her. Kade climbed onto the back of the carriage, ready to guard them.

The carriage driver cracked his leather whip. The strong horses neighed loudly. The wheels rolled forward, turning away from the main path and heading directly toward the bumpy, abandoned secondary road.
