Chapter 323: Chapter Three Hundred And Twenty Two

King Leonel slowly stood up from his chair at the head of the round table. The Lord Chancellor picked up the canvas cloth holding the iron weapon. Two armored royal guards immediately stepped forward to escort them.

Instantly, every single powerful lord and military general in the room stood up from their chairs.

Damon pushed his chair back. He stood tall, keeping his face blank. He bowed his head deeply, just like the rest of the men.

"Long live the King," the nobles murmured respectfully.

King Leonel did not say another word. He looked exhausted. He walked out of the chamber through the private royal door behind his throne.

Following closely behind the King were his two sons. Prince Elio walked with calm, smooth, polite steps. Prince Ivan walked a little faster, looking relieved that the stressful meeting was finally over. The side door clicked shut behind the royal family.

As soon as the King was out of the room, the strict silence broke.

The wealthy nobles immediately began to murmur and whisper loudly to each other. Some understood the true intentions of the king while some were deeply unhappy. They gathered in small groups, complaining bitterly about the new, invasive royal search laws.

Damon stood near his chair. He did not join the complaining groups. He watched them with calculating eyes.

Suddenly, the main double doors of the chamber opened.

A nervous-looking military aide rushed into the room. He walked very quickly, looking around the room frantically. His eyes landed on General Howe.

The aide practically ran over to where General Howe was standing.

Damon narrowed his eyes. He watched the exchange closely from across the large round table.

General Howe was already sweating profusely, still recovering from the terror of seeing Damon alive. When Howe saw his aide rushing toward him, Howe frowned deeply.

The aide leaned forward. He pressed his face very close to General Howe’s ear. He raised his hand to cover his mouth and whispered something very quickly into the older general’s ear.

Damon watched General Howe’s face.

The change in Howe’s expression was instant. The older general’s eyes widened in shock. All the remaining color drained from his scarred face, leaving him as pale as a white ghost. His jaw dropped slightly open.

General Howe did not say a single word to the other lords. He did not say goodbye. He quickly turned his back and practically ran out of the council chamber, his panicked aide following closely behind him.

Damon stood still, his brows frowned and his eyes narrowed.

He thought to himself, his internal voice filled with a dark suspicion. "Something is off with Howe and I will find out, sooner than later."

Damon relaxed his expression, dismissing General Howe from his mind for now.

He turned his gaze to the other side of the room.

He looked at Lord Ryde.

Lord Ryde was standing near the wall. He was slowly, calmly packing his official papers into his leather folder.

Damon frowned slightly. His instincts flared to life.

"Something is very wrong here," Damon thought to himself, his eyes analyzing the older nobleman.

Lord Ryde is an Earl who is incredibly greedy and ambitious. Lord Ryde made a massive amount of his illegal wealth by smuggling untaxed goods through his private merchant caravans.

By all logical rules, Lord Ryde should be the loudest, most furious person in this entire room right now. He should be yelling about his noble honor. He should be complaining about the royal guards searching his private boxes.

But Lord Ryde had been unusually quiet.

He had not said a single word during the entire meeting. And even now, as the other nobles complained loudly about their dissatisfaction and their threatened wealth, Lord Ryde simply packed his bag with a blank, calm expression. He did not react negatively at all.

"Why is he so calm?" Damon’s internal voice questioned suspiciously. "A greedy dog does not stay quiet when his meat is taken away. Unless..."

Damon’s eyes narrowed into dark, dangerous slits.

"...Unless he already knows the King’s new laws will not affect him," Damon concluded in his mind. "If Lord Ryde is calm about losing his normal smuggling routes, it means he has already secured a different, far more dangerous path. It means he is planning something massive. Something that makes the King’s new laws irrelevant to him."

Damon filed this crucial observation away in his sharp brain. He needed to have Kade investigate the Ryde family even deeper.

Just then, heavy footsteps approached him.

Kade walked over from the stone wall where the aides were waiting. He stopped beside Damon and bowed his head respectfully.

"My Lord," Kade spoke softly, keeping his voice low so the complaining nobles would not hear him. "The meeting is fully concluded. Are we going home now?"

Damon pulled his eyes away from Lord Ryde. He looked at his aide.

Damon nodded his head slowly.

"Yes," Damon replied. His voice was smooth and calm. "The military matters here are finished for today."

He turned his body toward the main doors. He did not want to spend another single second in this room filled with corrupt, panicking aristocrats.

"But first," Damon added, his eyes softening just a tiny fraction. "I need to go to the royal gardens. I need to find my wife."

He stepped away from his chair. He walked with long, confident strides out of the royal council chamber, leaving the noisy, complaining nobles behind him.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the royal palace, the atmosphere was different.

The grand, indoor hallways slowly transitioned into beautiful, open air. The polished marble floors turned into smooth, clean white stone paths. The air smelled sweet, filled with the scent of blooming pink roses, fresh green grass, and bright sunshine.

Camilla was walking slowly down the garden path.

Walking right beside her was the cheerful Isolde. Isolde was talking happily, pointing out the different colorful flowers and the large, splashing stone fountains in the royal garden.

Camilla walked quietly, listening to the girl. She found Isolde to be very energetic and surprisingly polite for a noble girl.

As they walked deeper into the garden, they approached a wide, open grassy area. Several noblewomen were gathered there. They were wearing expensive silk dresses, holding delicate fans, and chatting loudly while drinking tea.

When Isolde and Camilla stepped into the open area, the noblewomen immediately stopped talking.

They turned their heads and looked at the two girls.

Instantly, every single noblewoman in the garden put away their fans. They quickly smoothed down their heavy silk skirts. They all stepped back, creating a wide, clear path.

In perfect unison, the noble ladies lowered their bodies. They dropped into deep respectful curtsies. They bowed their heads toward Isolde.

"Your Highness," the noble ladies chorused together. Their voices were full of undeniable reverence.

Camilla stopped blinking for five full seconds.
