Chapter 324: Chapter Three Hundred And Twenty Three

She stopped walking instantly, her shoes planting firmly on the white stone path. Her eyes widened in surprise.

She stared at the bowing women, and then she slowly turned her head. She looked directly at the smiling girl standing right next to her.

Camilla blinked rapidly. Her mind raced to process the shocking information.

"Your Highness?" Camilla asked out loud. Her voice was slightly breathless with shock.

She looked at Isolde’s face, and then she looked closely at the girl’s beautiful purple dress.

Camilla’s mind cursed itself internally.

"I am so blind," Camilla thought to herself, her internal voice filled with disbelief. "How did I miss the details? Look at the fabric of her dress. It is spun from the finest royal silk. Look at the tiny golden lions embroidered near her collar. The golden lion is the crest of the Royal Family. Elio, Ivan, father... of course she meant Prince Elio, Prince Ivan and King Leonel!"

Camilla realized she was currently standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the only daughter of the King.

"You are the princess?" Camilla asked softly, her eyes wide.

Isolde looked at Camilla’s shocked face. The princess smiled a bright friendly smile. She nodded.

Camilla knew the rules of any historical novel. Showing disrespect to royalty was a crime punishable by imprisonment or death. She had just spent the last twenty minutes talking to the princess as if they were casual, equal friends.

Camilla quickly stepped back. She placed her hands on the silk skirts of her dress. She began to lower her body, fully intending to drop into a deep, formal curtsy to apologize for her lack of manners.

"Please forgive my ignorance, Your High—" Camilla started to speak formally.

Before Camilla could even bend her knees halfway down, Isolde moved quickly.

The princess reached out her hands and grabbed Camilla firmly by the arms, pulling her back up to a standing position.

Isolde stopped the curtsy.

"It’s fine!" Isolde laughed cheerfully, waving her hand in the air to dismiss the strict royal protocol. "Please, do not bow to me. I hate it when people do that. It makes everything so boring and stiff."

Isolde linked her arm comfortably through Camilla’s arm, acting exactly like they were best friends.

"Come," Isolde urged happily, pulling Camilla along the stone path. "Let’s go have some tea. I know a very quiet place where the other ladies won’t bother us with their gossiping."

Camilla was stunned by the princess’s casual, warm behavior, but she allowed herself to be led away from the bowing noblewomen.

Isolde took Camilla deeper into the royal gardens. They walked past tall green hedges and beautiful flower beds until they reached a stunning, white gazebo. The gazebo was surrounded by blooming red rose bushes and provided perfect shade from the sun.

Inside the gazebo, there was a small, round white table and two comfortable cushioned chairs.

"Sit, sit," Isolde offered, pointing to a chair.

Camilla sat down gracefully, arranging her skirts around her legs. Isolde sat down on the opposite chair.

Almost immediately, a royal maid dressed in a neat uniform stepped into the gazebo. The maid carried a large, shining silver tray. On the tray was a beautiful porcelain teapot, two teacups, and a plate filled with sweet, fresh, buttery biscuits.

The maid poured the hot, fragrant tea into their cups, bowed silently, and stepped away to give them privacy.

Camilla picked up her delicate teacup. She held the warm porcelain in her hands then took a slow, careful sip.

Isolde did not drink her tea immediately.

The princess leaned forward. She rested her elbows comfortably on the table. She placed her chin in the palm of her hand and looked at Camilla. Her bright eyes were sparkling with curiosity.

"So," Isolde spoke out loud, cutting straight to the point. "How is married life with Damon?"

Camilla had just taken a second sip of her hot tea.

When she heard the sudden blunt question, her throat closed up.

Cough! Cough! Cough!

Camilla choked violently on the hot liquid. The tea went down the wrong pipe. She gasped for air, coughing heavily. A small splash of the tea spilled out of her cup.

The drops of tea landed onto the front of her silk dress, leaving small, wet stains on the expensive fabric.

Isolde’s eyes widened in panic. She realized she had startled the Lady.

"Oh no!" Isolde gasped loudly.

The princess quickly sat up straight. She reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a handkerchief. She leaned across the table, trying to help wipe the spilled tea off Camilla’s dress.

"I am so sorry!" Isolde apologized repeatedly, her voice full of guilt. "I didn’t mean to surprise you like that! Please forgive me."

Camilla coughed one last time, clearing her throat. She quickly placed her teacup back down onto its saucer.

She raised her hand and gently stopped the princess from wiping her dress.

"It’s fine," Camilla said softly, her voice still a little raspy from coughing. She forced a polite, calm smile onto her face. "Don’t worry about it, Your Highness. It is just a few drops of water. It will dry."

Camilla pulled out her own handkerchief. She carefully dabbed the wet spots on her silk, absorbing the tea before it could stain the fabric permanently.

As she cleaned her dress, Camilla’s mind went to work.

She looked at the princess sitting across from her.

"Why is the princess asking me about my marriage?" Camilla thought to herself, her internal voice turning slightly guarded and observant.

She remembered the way Isolde had reacted in the hallway earlier. The princess had gasped in delight upon hearing Camilla’s name. She had looked at Camilla as if she were a magical creature.

"She is definitely one of Damon’s fan girls," Camilla concluded in her mind, her eyes narrowing just a tiny fraction. "But she is the King’s daughter. This is a very dangerous situation. If a royal princess is in love with Damon, she could easily use her royal power to cause terrible trouble for me."

Camilla finished wiping her dress. She folded her handkerchief and placed it back into her pocket.

She sat up straight. She folded her hands neatly on her lap. She decided she needed to gather information directly from the source. She needed to know exactly what kind of threat this young girl posed.

Camilla looked at Isolde. She carefully constructed her next sentence, choosing her words wisely.

"Your Highness," Camilla asked softly, her voice polite but inquiring. "If I may ask... what is your relationship with my husband?"

Camilla intentionally used the word ’husband’ instead of saying ’Damon’ or ’the General.’ She wanted to plant a clear verbal flag. She was marking her territory. She wanted to remind the princess, in the most polite way possible, that Damon was legally and permanently taken, by her of course.
