Chapter 328: Chapter Three Hundred And Twenty Seven

The carriage drove smoothly down the normal route. They had left the royal palace and were now traveling on the main dirt road that led back to the Benson mansion. The late afternoon sun was beginning to lower in the sky, casting long, warm orange shadows across the green trees lining the path.

Inside the carriage, the atmosphere was peaceful. The tension from the royal council meeting and the awkward encounter with Princess Isolde had slowly faded away.

Camilla sat comfortably on her soft velvet seat. She smoothed the fabric of her dress. She looked across the small space at Damon. He was sitting with his shoulders relaxed against the cushions, watching her quietly.

Camilla thought about the events in the royal garden. She remembered how casually Damon spoke with Prince Elio and Princess Isolde. They had joked and bickered like normal people, ignoring the strict rules of royal status.

"I didn’t know you were close to the royal siblings," Camilla spoke out loud. Her voice was soft and full of curiosity.

Damon looked at her. He rested his arm comfortably on the edge of the small window. He nodded his head slowly.

"I was," Damon spoke. His voice carried a hint of nostalgia. "That was when we were little. We used to play together in the palace gardens all the time. My father was very close to the King, so I was always there."

He paused for a moment, his eyes looking slightly distant as he remembered his childhood.

"But as we grew up," Damon continued smoothly, "we realized there are more important things waiting for us in the future. We could not play forever. We had duties to fulfill."

Camilla listened closely. She liked hearing about his past.

"I joined the Benson army as a recruit in my teens," Damon explained, looking down at his large, scarred hands. "I learned how to hold a real sword and how to march in the mud. I had to become strong to protect my family’s name."

Damon looked back up at her. His expression turned a little bit more serious.

"And then, tragedy struck the royal family," Damon said quietly. "Prince Elio had a terrible accident in the palace. He fell and hit his head very hard. He was in a deep coma for three years. The palace was a very sad place during that time."

Camilla’s eyes widened slightly. She did not know that the cheerful Crown Prince had suffered so much in the past.

"While Elio was asleep," Damon went on, "Prince Ivan and Princess Isolde took their royal studies very seriously. They had to prepare themselves to support the kingdom. We all grew up quickly, and everyone had their own duty to the crown. I became a commander, and they became proper royals."

Damon let out a soft, quiet sigh.

"Sometimes, when I come to the palace for a meeting with the King," Damon told her, "Elio and Ivan are not always there. They are busy managing the provinces. And Isolde is mostly inside the palace with the Queen, learning how to be a perfect noble lady."

He tilted his head slightly, offering her a very small, amused smile.

"I was actually very surprised she was out in the garden with the rest of the noblewomen today," Damon admitted. He looked into Camilla’s eyes. "Maybe it is because of you. She probably heard you were coming and wanted to meet you."

Camilla smiled. She thought about Isolde’s bright, energetic personality and Elio’s warm laughter.

"They are nice and well behaved," Camilla spoke honestly. "They do not act arrogant like the other nobles in the capital city."

Damon let out a low, rumbling chuckle. The sound vibrated warmly in his chest. He uncrossed his legs and leaned slightly forward on his velvet seat.

He looked at her with a teasing spark in his brown eyes.

"What about me?" Damon asked softly.

Camilla looked at his face. She remembered the way he had grabbed her arm and pulled her behind him when Isolde demanded to take her away. She remembered his fierce, possessive roar.

"You are not nice," Camilla spoke, keeping a very straight face.

She paused for a single second.

"Instead," Camilla continued, her voice dropping into a smooth, serious tone, "you are dangerous."

Damon’s smile grew wider. He crossed his arms over his chest. He liked that answer very much.

"Interesting," Damon said. He smirked.

He leaned his upper body even closer to her, closing the space between them in the small carriage. His eyes locked onto her lips.

"How dangerous am I?" Damon asked, his voice a low, rough, teasing whisper.

Camilla opened her mouth. She wanted to give him a sharp, sarcastic reply. She wanted to tell him that he was as dangerous as a grumpy bear.

But before a single word could leave her lips, the peaceful atmosphere was violently destroyed.

The carriage came to a sudden sharp, and violent stop.

The carriage jerked forward heavily. Camilla was thrown slightly off her seat. She quickly pressed her hands against the velvet cushions to catch her balance.

Outside, the horses neighed loudly in panic.

THUD.

They heard a very loud, heavy grunt of pain coming from the driver’s box outside. It was Hugo, their carriage driver. He sounded like he had just been hit very hard.

Then, Kade’s voice rang out loudly over the noise.

"My Lord!" Kade shouted. His voice was full of urgent warning. "We are surrounded!"

Inside the carriage, the playful, romantic mood vanished in exactly one tenth of a second.

"Are you hurt?" Damon asked, his voice filled with worry. His eyes and hands checking for a single scratch on her body.

Camilla shook her head.

Damon’s face immediately darkened. His jaw clenched tight, and his eyes turned cold with murderous intent.

He quickly moved to the glass window of the carriage. He looked outside.

He saw armed men standing in the shadows of the trees, blocking their path forward and backward. It was a planned, organized ambush.

Damon turned away from the window. He moved with explosive speed.

He reached his hands under his own velvet seat. He pressed his fingers against the wooden base. There was a hidden latch. He pushed it, and a secret compartment slid open.

He reached inside and pulled out a long object wrapped in dark leather.

He pulled the leather away. It was a sharp steel combat sword.

The sword currently resting on Damon’s belt was just a decorated ceremonial sword. He wore it only to look proper in front of the King during the royal council meeting. It was not balanced or sharpened for a real, bloody fight. This hidden sword, however, was his true weapon of war.

Damon gripped the handle tightly. He turned his body back to Camilla.

His face was serious. He looked at her with deep, protective eyes.

"Stay here," Damon commanded her firmly. His voice left absolutely no room for argument. "Do not leave the carriage. Keep the door closed. I will be right back."

He did not wait for her to nod. He leaned his tall body forward quickly.

He pressed his warm lips against her forehead. It was a fast protective kiss.

Then, Damon turned around. He grabbed the brass handle of the carriage door, pushed it wide open, and rushed out into the dangerous dirt road, pulling the door shut behind him.

Damon stepped out into the pre-evening air.

He scanned the scene instantly. He saw six men standing in a wide semi-circle around the carriage. They wore dark clothing. Their faces were hidden behind thick black cloth masks, leaving only their eyes. They all held sharp, long steel swords in their hands.

Damon looked at the ground near the front wheels of the carriage.

Hugo, the driver, was lying flat on the hard dirt. Hugo was groaning in pain, clutching his left arm tightly. A short arrow was sticking out of Hugo’s shoulder. Blood was soaking into the driver’s black uniform. Hugo was badly injured, but he was alive.
