Yoon Beom walked to the window of his hospital room.

The outside world seemed awfully familiar.

He remembered nothing of the dreamlike world he was just in. And he remembered in chilling detail about his real life.

"Beom-ah," a woman’s voice called for him.

He turned around and saw a woman who looked like a stranger.

It was his mother. Baek Yuseo.

His and Sarang’s mother.

But that woman was no longer someone he knew. She was someone who had abandoned them and remarried.

What the fuck is she doing here?

Yoon Beom asked himself.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" He asked plainly from his mother.

Not changing a single word of his thoughts.

"I..." she became quiet."i am your mother. It is my duty to take care of you when you need me."

"That’s rich coming from a woman who’s showing her face after 25 years."

"You can’t talk to me like that. I didn’t want to leave you either. The circumstances....!"

"If you really wanted to stay, you could! You just took the easy way out."

"I wanted you and Sarang! I wanted to take you along with me! But your grandfather took the custody from me! He proved in court that I wasn’t fit to support you two!"

"Your family was starving us!! I learned how to wash my sister’s hair four because you couldn’t provide even that little bit of care. You were too busy wotking your new marriage out!"

"I had no choice!! It’s not easy getting remarried and adjusting in a new family all over!! You have no right to question my choices!"

"It wasn’t even a month after dad passed. You couldn’t even wait a month and I don’t have the right?"

"It’s all that crap that your grandfather and grandmother have filled in your head against me!! Honestly I am glad that they’re dead and probably suffering in hell for breaking away a mother from her children!"

"..."

"You... you are my child! Sarang was my child too. I couldn’t save her but I am not going to leave you alone."

"..."

"Say something, Yoon Beom."

"I hate you."

"No, you don’t. Take that back."

"I hate you with all my being. If I ever see you in front of me again..."

"... I get it. Fine."

With a click of the door, Baek Yuseo disappeared from his life once again.

She was useless back then and she was still useless now too.

Yoon Beom looked outside the window again and felt utterly empty. He was now truly alone in this world.

And remembering how Jang Sonrgrik had abandoned him in high school wasn’t doing him any good.

After all, that was when his misery began.

And another etching feeling was clawing at his heart.

That he had forgotten something. Something very important.

The dreadful feeling that creeps up on you when you’re too delirious and realize something is amiss.

For most people that feeling lasted a few seconds before they recalled reality.

But the Yoon Beom in a hospital gown, staring outside the window was plunged into this feeling eternally.

As if he was cursed.

After an hour and a half, his room door opened again.

A man, a detective walked in.

Yoon Beom recognised him immediately.

"Park Najun," Beom called him by his name. "Long time no see."

Tears rolled down from Park Najun’s eyes as he hugged Beom and patted his back.

"Goddammit, you bastard! Do you know how bad you scared us all?!" He yelled at Beom.

Now for a proper context, Park Najun was Yoon Beom’s partner.

And Yoon Beom... he was not a shaman after he graduated. He joined the service of police and became a detective.

The shrine was too painful for him after Mokheon died.

And now, his partner in work and other colleagues were he had in the name of close friends.

That’s right... they were all he had left.

"How long was I out for?" Beom asked. "A lunatic came before you but I refuse to believe anything she says."

Najun awkwardly apologised for letting her in, but he said their hands were tied since she was the only blood relative he had.

They didn’t know Beom didn’t have a good relationship with his mother.

"Not good, Najun-ah, No relationship. That woman is as good as a stranger to me," Beom cleared.

"I’m sorry," Najun replied. "But it’s roughly been three months since you were on life support. It was a miracle that a fisherman caught you in that net before you could drown completely. But the lack of oxygen had shut your brain down somewhat if not entirely. The doctors were just going to wait for another month before declaring you brain dead."

"I got saved in the nick of time then," Beom chuckled. "The doctor said I’m good and might get discharged soon. How are things at work?"

Najun became quiet suddenly and then looked down nervously.

"What is it? Tell me," Beom inquired.

"You know the mafia boss’s son that you were after before that shooting with your sister, his body was found in the same river where they found you. He had bullet wounds that matched your handgun. So, you’re currently on the hitlist of the mafia’s members. Your hospital, survival and waking up, all of it is top secret," Najun paused briefly. "And the department had decided to post you in a foreign ambassy for your safety. Before that, Beom-ah, there is something very important I’m about to ask you and you have to answer me truthfully."

Najun looked at Beom with a serious expression.

As if he was desperately hoping Beom’s answer wouldn’t be what he feared.

"Ask me, Najun-ah," Beom smiled. It looked like as if he knew what Najun was going to ask him.

Najun sighed and took a deep breath in.

He turned his phone recorder on right in front of Beom and nodded to him.

"Detective Yoon Beom, what you say in this recording will be used as evidence in court and can and will be used against you if necessary. Do you you comply?" Najun asked.

"Yes."

"Detective Yoon Beom, did you, on the night of 31 January 20XX, shoot and murder the Jang family’s youngest son, Jang Songrik?"

Beom smiled.

"Yes."
