Neo’s eyes widened. He had expected Rose to look at least a little awkward when she spoke about the people she had just killed. Instead she talked about them the way someone might talk about clearing trash from a path.

He asked her what they had done to her.

Rose sighed. The sound was tired more than sad. She told him she had been an orphan. With nothing but her own strength she had climbed fast and become a general while still young. She hated them all for it. She hated how weaker women with the right connections reached the same rank she had bled for. She hated how the cow people never questioned their ruler even though the queen was the worst kind of leader—enforcing justice only on the weak, always chasing money, and forcing Rose to carry out one ugly order after another. Then Rose grinned. The expression was sharp and free.

"I’m not sad," she said. "I finally feel free."

Neo nodded. He understood that kind of freedom. He walked over to the couch instead of the throne. He had wanted to sit on the throne this time, but Veya had already told him she had accidentally destroyed it while trying out new modifications.

He had asked her what those modifications were. She had answered with a straight face that the throne was supposed to give massages and even had a cooling system built in. Neo had stared at her for a long second, then decided not to ask more questions.

He stretched out on the couch and closed his eyes. A glowing notification appeared in the air right in front of his face. His eyes snapped open as he read the quest.

**Quest: The demon army and the fallen angel are currently in a war. A messenger of the fallen angel will come to you and try to hire you as a mercenary. Join the war and kill at least five hundred heads in three days. You can go for more; the rewards will depend on the number of demon heads.**

**Failure: Your death, plus the death of everyone you love, plus the death of the whole forest.**

**Rewards: Transportation skill upgraded to reach the demon calamity level.**

Neo gulped. His eyes stayed wide. A war was happening right now while he was trying to take a nap. And the devil kingdom was strong enough to send an army against the angels and still keep a massive fight going at the same time.

He sat up. His eyes sharpened. He thought it through. Joining the war did not mean the fight would stay far away. If he went, some demons would probably follow him back and attack the forest. Vendetta was almost guaranteed. But the reward—the upgrade to his transportation skill—was too good to ignore. This was his best bet.

A glowing golden portal opened beside the couch. An angel woman stepped out of it.

Neo’s mouth hung open.

She had four pairs of pure white wings. Blonde hair fell past her shoulders. Her chest was heavy and full, straining against a tight white shirt. Her hips and ass filled out a short white skirt the same way. Her legs were plump and smooth. Because Neo was still sitting on the couch, his eye level lined up with her inner thighs. As she walked toward him he caught a clear glimpse of white underwear. His cock throbbed hard in his pants.

She stopped in front of him.

"My name is Gabriel," she said. "I came here to hire you as our mercenary after hearing about your feats."

Neo managed, "Is that so?"

White spears materialized in the air around her. She had noticed the bulge in his pants and the direction of his gaze. Her voice turned sharp.

"Raise this instant or I’m hitting your dick with a holy spear."

Neo nodded fast. He stood up and stayed alert, eyes carefully away from her body. Gabriel’s expression softened into a small smile.

"Like this you should hear my words." She cleared her throat. "Currently we angels are trying to restore one of our cities that the demons took. You will help us. You get paid by the head."

Neo tilted his head. "Is that so? How many mana stones per head?"

Gabriel paused for a moment. "One thousand mana stones."

Neo nodded at once. There was no way he would let a chance like this pass. His eyes drifted back to the short skirt for half a second before he forced them away again. He also thought, privately, that he would enjoy his time there for more than just the pay.

Gabriel noticed the look. Another spear appeared in her hand. Neo quickly turned his face to the side.

"Okay," he said.

Gabriel continued. He would not be working alone. He would be assigned to a unit of four women. If she heard a single complaint from them about him, his pay would be deducted.

Neo nodded. He called Martha and the rest of his harem into the room and explained the situation. They listened without interrupting. When he finished they simply nodded.

He told them it would take him about four days to reach the place, fight in the war, and come back once he had enough mana stones. The real limit was three days, but he wanted the extra day to get to know the people he would be working with.

The girls accepted it. Neo turned to Veya last.

"You can use both the tribe’s resources and the mana stones. Impress me with how secure you can make everything while I’m gone."

Veya grinned. "Don’t worry. You’ll be surprised in a good way when you come back."

Neo nodded once more. He walked behind Gabriel. The golden portal swallowed them both.

When the light faded he found himself standing in a huge white hall. Angels flew across the high ceiling, some holding spears, others talking in low voices while they passed papers and revised orders. The air felt clean and sharp.

Gabriel noticed the way Neo looked around. Pride filled her voice.

"This is called the Heavenly Ceiling. It is filled with many war-type angels like me. The group you will be assigned to is the support-type unit. That means you will be responsible for protecting them."

She paused. The sudden silence caught Neo off guard. Then she glared at him with cold blue eyes.

"If one of them dies under your supervision, expect the entire angel race to come after you."
