Chapter — The Wyvern Assault
The great doors of the dragon queen’s castle opened with a thunderous groan.
Cold night air rushed into the main hall, carrying with it the distant roar of dragons and the sharp smell of smoke.
Sira stepped forward first.
The hesitation that had briefly touched her face was gone.
She was the Dragon Queen again.
Her shoulders straightened. Her chin lifted. The embarrassment and vulnerability she had shown Neo moments ago disappeared behind the authority of centuries of tradition.
Yet Neo noticed something.
Her hands were trembling.
Only slightly.
He looked at her.
"You are afraid."
Sira stopped.
The guard behind them immediately lowered her head, pretending she hadn’t heard.
Sira turned toward Neo.
"I am the queen," she said quietly.
"That wasn’t my question."
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she exhaled.
"Yes."
It was the first time Neo had heard her admit it.
Not weakness.
Fear.
Sira looked toward the enormous windows overlooking the dragon kingdom. Beyond them, red flashes illuminated the sky.
"We have been rebuilding for months," she said. "Our warriors aren’t ready. The western towers were damaged during the last battle. The young dragons haven’t finished their training."
Neo watched her carefully.
"And you?"
Her eyes hardened.
"I will fight."
"I didn’t ask whether you would."
Sira frowned.
Neo stepped closer.
"I asked whether you are ready."
Her jaw tightened.
That question struck deeper than he intended.
"I don’t have the luxury of being unready."
"That’s not an answer."
She stared at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Sira smiled bitterly.
"You really are irritating."
"So I’ve been told."
"And arrogant."
"That too."
"Reckless."
"Definitely."
She almost laughed.
Almost.
Then another explosion shook the castle.
A distant roar followed.
Sira’s expression changed immediately.
"Enough."
She turned toward the guard.
"Sound the crimson horn. Evacuate the hatchlings from the western caves. Send every available healer to the lower fortress."
The guard bowed.
"And the army?"
Sira’s eyes narrowed.
"Tell them their queen is coming."
The guard hesitated.
"Your Majesty, the western wall—"
"I said I’m coming."
The guard bowed again and rushed away.
Neo followed Sira outside.
The sight before him was enormous.
Hundreds of dragons filled the night sky.
Some belonged to Sira’s tribe.
Others were wyverns.
Unlike the dragons, the wyverns moved in smaller, faster formations. They attacked the kingdom’s towers, diving through clouds of smoke before pulling upward at the last second.
Fire painted the sky orange.
Stone shattered.
The kingdom was screaming.
Sira spread her wings.
Neo caught her wrist.
She looked back.
"What?"
"You can’t fight like this."
"I have been fighting since before you knew my name."
"And that’s exactly the problem."
Her eyes flashed.
"Explain."
"You aren’t thinking like a commander."
She stared at him.
"You are thinking like a daughter."
That stopped her.
Neo continued.
"Your mother built this kingdom. You want to prove you deserve it. Every battle is another chance to become her."
Sira’s expression became cold.
"Do not speak about my mother."
"You told me about her."
"That doesn’t give you permission."
"No."
Neo stepped closer.
"But it gives me a reason to understand you."
Her anger faltered.
He pointed toward the battlefield.
"The wyverns aren’t trying to destroy the kingdom."
Sira looked toward the western side.
"They’re attacking the rebuilding sites."
Her eyes widened.
"The eggs."
Neo nodded.
"They want the hatchlings."
Silence.
Sira’s face changed completely.
The anger remained.
But now something much more dangerous replaced it.
Resolve.
"Then they won’t get them."
She transformed.
Her body expanded in a burst of crimson light, scales replacing skin as enormous wings unfolded behind her.
The Dragon Queen roared.
The sound shook the mountains.
Every dragon in the sky turned toward her.
Sira launched herself upward.
Neo smiled.
"Now that’s more like it."
He jumped.
Power surged through his body.
The battlefield seemed to slow.
He could see every wyvern.
Every dragon.
Every burning tower.
And beneath it all, the terrified cries of the young.
Neo shot toward the western caves.
Three wyverns were already approaching.
The first opened its jaws.
Neo punched it.
The impact sent the creature spinning through the sky.
The second tried to strike from behind.
Neo twisted.
He caught its wing.
Then he threw it into the ground.
The third stopped.
It looked at him.
Neo looked back.
"You’re going to run?"
The wyvern screeched.
Neo grinned.
"Good choice."
It fled.
But another sound caught his attention.
A roar unlike any other.
He turned.
Sira was fighting three wyvern commanders simultaneously.
She was magnificent.
Terrifying.
But Neo noticed something wrong.
She was taking hits.
One wyvern slammed into her side.
Another struck her wing.
Sira recovered and unleashed a stream of fire that forced two of them backward.
But the third climbed above her.
Neo moved instantly.
He reached Sira just as the wyvern descended.
His fist collided with its skull.
The creature crashed into the mountainside.
Sira landed beside him.
"You followed me."
"I saved you."
"I didn’t need saving."
"You were about to get hit."
"I had it under control."
"You were bleeding."
She looked down.
A thin line of blood ran along her arm.
She frowned.
"That’s nothing."
Neo sighed.
"You really are impossible."
She smiled.
"And you came anyway."
"I told you I’d help."
For a moment, the battlefield disappeared.
They simply looked at each other.
Then Sira whispered:
"Thank you."
It was quiet.
Almost lost beneath the explosions.
But Neo heard it.
He smiled.
"You’re welcome, Dragon Queen."
Her cheeks warmed.
She turned away.
"Don’t make me regret thanking you."
"I wouldn’t dare."
A shadow passed over them.
They both looked upward.
Something enormous descended from the clouds.
The wyverns around the battlefield suddenly stopped attacking.
They moved aside.
A massive black wyvern emerged.
Its horns were broken.
Its scales were scarred.
And around its neck was a metal collar covered in ancient symbols.
Sira’s expression became one of pure hatred.
"No."
Neo looked at her.
"You know it?"
"That is Varkos."
"Who?"
"The firstborn of the old wyvern king."
Sira’s hands curled into fists.
"My mother defeated him."
Varkos landed.
The ground cracked beneath his weight.
His eyes locked onto Sira.
"Little princess."
Sira’s eyes burned.
"Do not call me that."
Varkos laughed.
"Still trying to become your mother?"
Sira froze.
Neo looked at her.
The words had struck exactly where they were intended.
Varkos continued.
"You wear her crown. You speak her words. You command her army."
His grin widened.
"But you aren’t her."
Sira’s breathing became heavier.
Neo stepped beside her.
Varkos laughed.
"And now you’ve found yourself a champion."
Sira looked at Neo.
For once, she didn’t hide what she was feeling.
Fear.
Anger.
And something else.
Trust.
Neo stepped forward.
"You talk too much."
Varkos roared.
The battle began.
The two collided.
The impact sent shockwaves through the valley.
Neo was stronger than Varkos expected.
But Varkos was faster.
A claw struck Neo’s chest.
He flew backward and crashed through a stone wall.
Sira’s eyes widened.
"NEO!"
Dust filled the air.
Varkos laughed.
"Chosen one."
Sira’s wings spread.
"You made one mistake."
Varkos looked at her.
Sira’s eyes glowed.
"You assumed I was fighting alone."
Every dragon in the kingdom turned toward her.
Sira raised her head.
"DRAGONS!"
A thousand voices answered.
The sky filled with wings.
Varkos looked around.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Sira charged.
The dragon army followed.
The battlefield became chaos.
Fire crossed the sky.
Wyverns scattered.
Dragons attacked from every direction.
And from beneath the ruined wall, Neo stood.
He wiped blood from his mouth.
Then he laughed.
Sira glanced at him.
He gave her a thumbs-up.
She rolled her eyes.
"Idiot."
But she was smiling.
Together, they attacked Varkos.
Neo struck from the ground.
Sira attacked from above.
Varkos blocked one.
Then the other.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Until finally Neo caught Varkos’s wing.
Sira understood immediately.
She dove.
Her claws struck the wyvern’s armor.
Varkos roared.
Neo pulled.
Sira struck.
The ancient wyvern collapsed.
Silence followed.
Then the dragon kingdom erupted in cheers.
Sira landed beside Neo.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her clothes were torn.
There was blood on her cheek.
But she was smiling.
Not the proud smile of a queen.
Not the cold smile of a warrior.
A genuine smile.
Neo looked at her.
"Your mother would be proud."
Sira’s smile disappeared.
For a second, she looked like a child again.
Then she looked toward the burning sky.
"I hope so."
Neo placed a hand on her shoulder.
"You don’t have to become her."
Sira looked at him.
"You don’t understand."
"I think I do."
She shook her head.
"No. You don’t."
She touched the crown resting upon her head.
"This isn’t just a crown."
Her voice became softer.
"It’s every promise I made to her."
Neo remained silent.
Sira looked at him.
"And now I have another promise."
"What?"
She smiled faintly.
"To you."
Neo raised an eyebrow.
"That sounds dangerous."
"It probably is."
She stepped closer.
"You came when you could have left."
"I told you I would."
"And you saved my people."
"They’re your people."
"And now..."
She hesitated.
Her confidence briefly vanished.
"...I want you to stay."
Neo looked at her.
Not as the Dragon Queen.
Not as the woman who had offered him a place beside her.
But as Sira.
A woman carrying the weight of a dead mother’s legacy and terrified that she would never be enough.
Neo smiled.
"I’ll stay."
Sira’s eyes widened.
"Really?"
"For tonight."
She laughed.
"Only tonight?"
"We’ll negotiate tomorrow."
She punched him lightly in the shoulder.
"Idiot."
Behind them, Eva approached.
She had watched the battle from the edge of the fortress.
Her expression was unusually thoughtful.
"So..."
Neo turned.
Eva crossed her arms.
"You two nearly got yourselves killed."
Sira raised an eyebrow.
"And you?"
Eva smiled.
"I was enjoying the show."
Sira stared at her.
Then, unexpectedly, she laughed.
The three stood beneath the burning sky.
The war was not over.
The wyverns had escaped.
Varkos was defeated, but not dead.
And somewhere beyond the mountains, something older was watching.
But for the first time since becoming queen, Sira didn’t feel alone.
She looked toward Neo.
Then toward Eva.
And quietly whispered:
"Perhaps fate isn’t something I have to control."
Neo heard her.
"What?"
Sira smiled.
"Nothing."
Above them, the clouds parted.
A strange red light appeared beyond the horizon.
Neo’s expression changed.
He knew that light.
The same presence.
The same overwhelming warmth.
The same ancient power.
Pyra.
The goddess was watching.
And this time, she wasn’t calling Neo alone.
The red light touched Sira’s crown.
The Dragon Queen looked upward.
Her breath caught.
A voice echoed through the heavens.
Not loud.
Not threatening.
Almost gentle.
"Daughter of the dragon throne..."
Sira froze.
"...you have finally found the path your mother could not."
Her eyes widened.
Neo stepped beside her.
Eva stopped smiling.
The entire kingdom fell silent.
And then the goddess spoke again.
"Come to the mountain."
The red light vanished.
Sira stared into the darkness.
For the first time in her life, she had heard the voice of the goddess she had spent her entire life trying to impress.
And she understood something terrifying.
Pyra hadn’t summoned Neo.
She had summoned both of them.
