Chapter — The Queen’s First War
The main hall had changed.
Only minutes earlier, it had been a place of warmth and private promises. Now it felt like the heart of a kingdom preparing to bleed.
Servants rushed through the enormous chamber carrying weapons, armor, scrolls, and emergency supplies. Dragon warriors poured through the open gates. Some were already wounded. Others were shouting orders over one another.
Sira stood at the center of it all.
The Dragon Queen.
Her expression had hardened again, but Neo could see what the others couldn’t.
She was afraid.
Not for herself.
For everyone else.
A young dragon rushed toward her.
"Your Majesty! The western watchtower has fallen!"
"How many casualties?"
"Thirty-two confirmed. More missing."
Sira’s jaw tightened.
"And the hatcheries?"
"Still secure."
She exhaled.
"Then we hold the western line."
The warrior hesitated.
"The soldiers are asking whether you will personally—"
"I will."
The warrior bowed and ran.
Neo watched Sira.
"You should send someone else."
She turned sharply.
"No."
"You are the queen."
"Exactly."
"Queens don’t need to be on every battlefield."
Sira’s eyes flashed.
"My mother was."
Neo said nothing.
There it was again.
Her greatest strength.
And her greatest weakness.
Every decision she made was measured against a woman who was no longer alive.
Sira had inherited a crown.
But she had also inherited a ghost.
"You don’t have to become her," Neo said.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Don’t start."
"I’m serious."
"So am I."
She stepped closer.
"My mother saved this kingdom three times. She defeated enemies that entire armies couldn’t defeat. She stood between the dragons and extinction."
Her voice became quieter.
"And when she died, everyone looked at me."
Neo understood.
"They expected you to replace her."
"They expected me to be better."
For the first time, the confidence in her voice cracked.
"I was sixteen."
Neo’s expression softened.
Sira looked away.
"I couldn’t even lift her sword."
Silence filled the hall.
"I trained until my hands bled," she continued. "I studied until I could barely keep my eyes open. I learned diplomacy. Military strategy. Dragon law. Ancient history. Magic."
She touched the crown on her head.
"Everything because I thought if I became strong enough, wise enough, perfect enough, perhaps one day Pyra would look at me and say..."
She swallowed.
"Your mother would be proud."
Neo stepped closer.
"And if she never says it?"
Sira looked at him.
Her eyes were wet.
"Then I suppose I’ll spend the rest of my life wondering what I did wrong."
Neo placed a hand on her shoulder.
"You didn’t do anything wrong."
Sira stared at him.
"You don’t know that."
"I know enough."
She almost smiled.
"You’re annoyingly confident."
"You’re annoyingly stubborn."
That finally made her laugh.
A small laugh.
But it was real.
Then the castle shook.
A roar came from outside.
The windows rattled.
Sira immediately turned.
"That wasn’t a wyvern."
Neo’s expression changed.
"No."
Another roar followed.
This one was deeper.
Older.
Something enormous passed over the castle.
The dragons outside screamed.
Sira rushed toward the balcony.
Neo followed.
The sight made even him pause.
Hundreds of wyverns were descending from the clouds.
But behind them was something far larger.
A black dragon.
Its wings covered the moon.
Its body was covered in ancient scars.
And its eyes burned blue.
Sira whispered:
"Impossible."
Neo looked at her.
"Who is that?"
"My mother’s greatest enemy."
The black dragon landed beyond the walls.
The impact created a shockwave that sent soldiers stumbling.
Sira’s face became pale.
"His name is Vaelor."
Neo frowned.
"I thought you said the wyverns were attacking."
"They are."
Sira looked toward the enormous creature.
"But he’s not a wyvern."
The black dragon lifted his head.
His voice carried across the entire kingdom.
"Dragon Queen."
Every soldier became silent.
Sira stepped forward.
"Vaelor."
He smiled.
"So the little girl finally inherited the throne."
Sira’s eyes burned.
"I am not a little girl."
"No."
Vaelor laughed.
"You are the daughter of the woman who killed my brother."
Sira’s fists tightened.
"And you are the coward who waited until she was dead."
The soldiers gasped.
Vaelor’s smile disappeared.
Neo looked at Sira.
There was her flaw.
She couldn’t forgive.
She couldn’t let insults pass.
And Vaelor knew exactly how to use it.
"You sound like her."
Sira’s breathing changed.
"Good."
Vaelor smiled again.
"Then perhaps I should kill you the same way I tried to kill her."
Sira’s wings opened.
"Come and try."
Neo grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
She turned.
"I can handle him."
"I know."
"Then let go."
"I’m not stopping you."
She frowned.
"Then what?"
Neo pointed toward the army.
"Look."
Sira looked.
The wyverns weren’t attacking.
They were surrounding the kingdom.
Not invading.
Containing.
Neo’s eyes narrowed.
"They’re waiting for something."
Sira’s expression changed.
"An army?"
"Maybe."
A horn sounded from the mountains.
Then another.
Then another.
Sira’s eyes widened.
"They’ve surrounded us."
Neo nodded.
"Exactly."
She looked toward the castle.
"The hatcheries."
Neo understood.
"They’re using the attack as a distraction."
Sira immediately turned.
"Eva!"
Eva appeared from behind a pillar.
"Already going."
Sira blinked.
Eva grinned.
"I figured you two would notice eventually."
Neo smiled.
"Good."
Eva winked.
"Someone has to be useful around here."
Sira almost laughed.
Almost.
Then she looked at Eva seriously.
"Take fifty warriors. Protect the hatcheries."
Eva nodded.
"Done."
"And Eva?"
"Yeah?"
"Don’t die."
Eva’s grin softened.
"Same to you, Queen."
She ran.
Sira turned toward Neo.
"Now it’s just us."
"Not quite."
He pointed upward.
A group of wyverns dove toward the castle.
Sira transformed.
Crimson light exploded around her.
In seconds, the Dragon Queen was airborne.
Neo followed.
The battle erupted.
Fire crossed the sky.
Claws struck scales.
Wings collided.
The castle walls shook beneath them.
Sira fought like someone possessed.
Every movement was precise.
Every attack carried years of training.
But Neo noticed something dangerous.
She was fighting emotionally.
Every time Vaelor appeared, she abandoned strategy to chase him.
"Sira!"
She ignored him.
"Dragon Queen!"
She still ignored him.
Vaelor struck her.
She spun through the air.
Neo caught her before she hit the ground.
She looked at him, stunned.
"Let me go."
"No."
"I can fight."
"You’re angry."
"So?"
"You’re making mistakes."
Her eyes flashed.
"You think I don’t know that?"
"Then stop."
"I can’t!"
The words came out louder than she intended.
She stared at him.
"I can’t stop."
Neo held her steady.
"Why?"
"Because he was there."
"Where?"
"When my mother died."
Neo froze.
Sira’s voice broke.
"I was there."
For a moment, the battlefield disappeared.
"I saw her fall."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I watched her fight him. I watched her protect me. And I couldn’t do anything."
Neo said nothing.
"I was supposed to be strong."
She looked at her hands.
"I wasn’t."
Neo touched her cheek.
"You were a child."
"I was her daughter."
"You were a child."
She looked into his eyes.
Something inside her finally broke.
Not her strength.
Her guilt.
Neo pulled her into his arms.
Sira resisted for one second.
Then she stopped.
Her forehead rested against his shoulder.
"I hate him."
"I know."
"I want to kill him."
"I know."
"I don’t know if I can forgive myself."
Neo held her tighter.
"You don’t have to forgive yourself tonight."
She closed her eyes.
"Then what do I do?"
"Survive."
She looked up.
"And tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow, you decide who you want to be."
Sira stared at him.
Then she smiled.
A dangerous smile.
"You’re becoming very good at talking."
"I’m learning."
She stepped back.
Her wings spread.
"Then watch me."
Neo smiled.
"That’s my Dragon Queen."
Together they turned toward Vaelor.
This time, Sira didn’t charge blindly.
She waited.
Watched.
Calculated.
Vaelor attacked.
She dodged.
He struck again.
She moved beneath him.
Neo attacked from the opposite side.
Vaelor roared.
The battle shifted.
For the first time, the ancient dragon was forced backward.
Sira saw the opening.
She remembered everything her mother had taught her.
Not just strength.
Patience.
Timing.
Control.
She flew upward.
Vaelor followed.
Exactly as she expected.
She turned at the last moment.
Neo struck.
Vaelor fell.
Sira descended after him.
Her claws stopped inches from his throat.
Vaelor looked up.
"Do it."
Sira’s breathing was heavy.
Her mother’s face flashed through her memory.
Then the crown.
Then the kingdom.
Then Neo.
She lowered her claws.
"No."
Vaelor looked confused.
Sira stood over him.
"You wanted me to become my mother."
She shook her head.
"I’m not her."
Her voice became stronger.
"I’m Sira."
She turned away.
"And I decide what that means."
Neo smiled.
The battle was over.
Across the kingdom, the remaining wyverns began retreating.
The dragons roared in victory.
Sira looked toward the sunrise.
The first light touched her scales.
For once, she didn’t wonder whether her mother would approve.
She simply stood there.
Alive.
Free.
And powerful.
Neo walked toward her.
"You did well."
She looked at him.
"Was that praise?"
"Don’t get used to it."
She smiled.
"I’ll remember it forever."
Then Eva returned.
Her armor was scratched.
Her hair was messy.
And she was carrying a small dragon hatchling.
"Good news."
Sira rushed toward her.
"The hatcheries?"
"Safe."
Sira’s shoulders finally relaxed.
"And the bad news?"
Eva looked toward the horizon.
"Vaelor wasn’t the one who planned this."
Neo’s smile vanished.
Sira’s expression hardened.
"Who was?"
Eva pointed toward the mountains.
"There."
Far beyond the battlefield, a red glow had appeared.
The same red glow Neo had seen before.
The air became warm.
Every dragon in the kingdom lowered its head.
Sira slowly looked upward.
A voice echoed across the sky.
Ancient.
Beautiful.
Terrifying.
"Sira, daughter of the Dragon Queen."
Her heart stopped.
Neo stepped beside her.
Eva’s expression became serious.
The voice continued.
"You have spent your life seeking my approval."
Sira’s eyes widened.
"But you misunderstood the purpose of the crown."
The red light grew brighter.
"A ruler does not live to become worthy of the dead."
Sira trembled.
"A ruler lives to protect the living."
The light vanished.
Silence followed.
Sira looked at Neo.
Tears were running down her face.
But she was smiling.
"My mother..."
Neo waited.
Sira whispered:
"She wasn’t asking me to become her."
Neo smiled.
"No."
Sira looked toward the mountains.
"She was asking me to become myself."
Eva crossed her arms.
"So..."
She looked between them.
"Does this mean we’re going to meet a goddess now?"
Neo laughed.
"Looks like it."
Sira wiped her tears.
Then she placed her crown firmly upon her head.
"Prepare the kingdom."
Eva blinked.
"For what?"
Sira looked toward the distant volcano.
"For the journey."
Neo stepped beside her.
"And if Pyra summoned us?"
Sira’s eyes glowed.
"Then we will answer."
The three stood together as the sun rose over the ruined battlefield.
Behind them lay a kingdom that had survived another war.
Ahead waited a goddess.
And somewhere beyond the mountains, an enemy powerful enough to command Vaelor was already preparing its next move.
Sira looked at Neo.
"You promised to stay."
Neo nodded.
"I did."
"For tonight?"
He smiled.
"For as long as the story requires."
Sira laughed.
"Then don’t fall behind, chosen one."
She spread her wings.
Neo stepped forward.
Eva followed.
And together, they flew toward the mountain where Goddess Pyra waited.
