Triple X System

Chapter 368: Heartworld Pulse

The alcove smelled like ozone and old metal. Kyle leaned back against the pylon, letting the cold bite through the Aegis-V plating. Elara’s breathing was steady now, the suit’s internal readouts cycling from amber to a slow, stable green.

[AEGIS-V SUIT ENERGY: 45%]

[EST. DURATION: 11H 42M]

[DARK ENERGY FILTER: ACTIVE]

"Half a day," Kyle muttered. "That’s not long."

[Not if the swarm finds us first,] Snow replied, her voice dropping from playful to tactical. [And they will. Those vibrations you felt? They’re not moving away. They’re circling.]

Kyle closed the status window. The blue text faded, but the numbers stayed burned into his head. Lv. 50. Abyssal Shadow Weaver. 10,000 XXX points sitting untouched. Not the time for upgrades. Not with blood puppets and something called a Nabakayak on the move.

He shifted Elara so her head rested against the curve of the metal. Her pulse was weak but present. The suit was doing its job, pulling the corroded air and dark energy out of her lungs one filtered breath at a time.

"You heard them," Kyle said quietly. "Slimes. But not slimes. Shaiyak. Farak. Gathering. Humans on Kraken."

[Piece it together,] Snow said. [Kraken isn’t just a dead world. Something lives here. Organizes. Those voices? That was military. A patrol. Young one wanted to hunt the Nabakayak, older one shut him down. "Come of age" means they have ranks. Rules. And if there’s news about humans, Vladimir isn’t the only one who knows we’re here.]

Kyle’s jaw tightened. Argos was dead, but the fallout was just starting. The swarm on their tail, the blood puppet quest with no coordinates, and now a structured force that called this place home.

He peered past the edge of the pylon. The red sand stretched out like a wound. The pale ash trees with their black leaves swayed without wind. The red fruit pulsed, slow and deliberate, like a heartbeat. The musky black stream cut through the center, and for a second Kyle swore the surface rippled in the shape of a sigil he’d seen in Lilith’s old grimoires.

"Maybe we’re in hell," he’d joked earlier. Maybe he wasn’t wrong.

[We move in three,] Snow said. [Swarm’s shifting west. The patrol’s gone east toward the gathering. That gives us a narrow window to cross the stream and get into those trees. The fruit might be dangerous, but the roots of those trees run deep. Natural cover.]

"Blood puppets," Kyle said. "The quest said ’find out more information.’ Vague on purpose. What if it’s not just vampires making them?"

[Then we’re looking for a factory, not a person,] Snow replied. [Vladimir makes puppets with blood oaths. But those shaiyak you saw? Their bodies don’t have bones. If something can puppet flesh, it can puppet a slime-body too. Maybe easier.]

Kyle stood. His right leg hummed. The Abyssal Talon Manifest was passive, but he could feel the shadow essence coiling just under the skin, ready. +50% defense. +15% movement speed. If he had to run again, he’d outpace them.

He lifted Elara. She was light, but the Aegis-V made her weight manageable. The suit’s HUD flickered against her chest plate.

[Shadow Walk is still on cooldown for 2 minutes,] Snow warned. [You’ll have to use the terrain. Stay low. Use the black glass shards—they reflect Kraken’s moons wrong. Breaks up your outline.]

"Got it."

Kyle slipped out of the alcove. The moment his boots touched the red sand, he felt it: tiny vibrations. Not distant anymore. Closer. Rhythmic. Like dozens of legs moving in sync.

The insectoid swarm.

They moved like a tide, a shifting black mass that flowed over dunes and around rock spires. No leader. No formation. Just hunger and noise. The sound was what they hunted. Sound meant life.

Kyle didn’t run. Running made noise. He walked, fast and deliberate, keeping to the shadow of the pylon, then darting from one patch of black glass to the next. Each step had to land soft. Each breath had to be controlled.

Above him, Kraken’s moons hung low, bleeding red light across the heart-shaped planet. The red veins on the surface pulsed once. Twice. In time with the fruit in the trees.

[You feel that?] Snow asked. [The whole planet’s got a pulse. That’s not geology. That’s biology.]

Kyle reached the stream. The musky black water didn’t reflect the moons. It absorbed them. He crouched, letting Elara’s boots hover just above the surface. The water was cold enough to bite, thick enough that a ripple would travel far.

On the other side, the ash trees waited. Their bark was pale, cracked, and the red spots looked too much like eyes. Between the trunks, the ground was covered in fallen leaves that crunched if you stepped wrong.

"Options?" Kyle whispered.

[Two,] Snow said. [One: we cross the stream and risk the leaves. Fast, but noisy. Two: we follow the stream downstream. Slower, but the water masks our sound. Downside—we don’t know what lives in it.]

Kyle remembered the sigil. The grimoires.

"Downstream," he decided. "If this is hell, then the river’s Styx. And I’d rather fight what’s in the water than announce ourselves to every swarm on the ridge."

He stepped in. The water climbed to his knees immediately, viscous and clinging. It didn’t pull him under. It just... observed. Cold fingers of current tugged at Elara’s suit, testing the seals. The Aegis-V held.

They moved. Slow. One step. Pause. Listen. The swarm’s vibrations grew louder behind them, then faded as the swarm turned away, chasing something else down the ridge. A lucky break.

After fifty meters, the stream widened. The ash trees leaned in, their branches forming a tunnel. The red fruit pulsed brighter here, and the air tasted metallic.

[Energy spike,] Snow said suddenly. [Low frequency. Not swarm. Not patrol. Something underground.]

Kyle stopped. The water around his legs began to bubble. Not boiling—vibrating. A low hum rose from beneath the stream bed, resonating through his bones.

From the mud at the bottom, shapes began to rise. Not slimes. Not insects. Shapes like hands, but with too many fingers, all jointed wrong. They didn’t grab. They just... reached. Toward the fruit. Toward him.

[Well,] Snow said dryly. [Remember when I said ’we’re not dying today’? I might’ve spoken too soon.]

Kyle set Elara down gently on a dry patch of stone at the stream’s edge. He couldn’t fight and carry her at the same time. Not with his energy levels.

He rolled his shoulders. The Abyssal Talon Manifest flared to life. Shadow bled down his right leg, turning the boot into something clawed and sharp. +25% defense ignored on kicks. He’d need it.

The first hand broke the surface. Then another. Dozens of them, rising in a circle around him.

Kyle exhaled. His killing intent ticked up from 25 to 27.

"Alright," he said, settling into a stance. "Let’s find out what these things are."

[Shadow Energy: 1000/1000,] Snow reported. [Demon Energy: 2500/2500. You’ve got enough for one big move. Make it count.]

The hands lunged.

Kyle moved first. His leg snapped out, shadow trailing behind it. The kick didn’t just hit the nearest hand—it went through it, the Abyssal Reflex proc triggering with a 20% chance. A shadow claw strike tore across three more hands, inflicting Hemorrhage. Black ichor sprayed into the water, and the hum faltered.

The planet’s pulse stuttered.

From deep beneath the stream, something groaned. Something big. Something awake.

[New objective added,] Snow said, her tone sharp. [Survive the next sixty seconds.]

Kyle didn’t answer. He was already moving, water exploding around him as he danced between grasping fingers and rising shapes. Elara was safe on the stone. The swarm was distant. The patrol was gone.

But the Heartworld had noticed him.

And it was listening.
