Black ichor hit the water and hissed. The hum under the stream stuttered, then dropped an octave. Whatever was waking up didn’t like being hurt.
Kyle didn’t wait. The hands were still rising, more fingers than joints should allow, reaching for him, for Elara, for the pulsing fruit above. The planet’s red veins throbbed once in his peripheral vision, like Kraken itself was watching.
[Shadow Energy: 1000/1000,] Snow reported, clipped and fast. [Demon Energy: 2500/2500. Sixty seconds before that thing fully surfaces. Make it count.]
"Copy," Kyle breathed. He shifted his weight, planting his left foot and letting the Abyssal Talon Manifest take over his right. Shadow poured down the limb, reshaping the Aegis-V boot into a clawed, jagged thing. The air around it bent, heavier. +50% defense on the leg. +15% movement speed baseline. He’d need both.
The first hand lunged. Kyle sidestepped, but sidestepping was loud. The water splashed. Another hand rose to fill the gap. He was outnumbered and exposed, and Elara was five meters behind him on bare stone.
He couldn’t fight like this. Not hand-to-hand with dozens of targets. He needed space. He needed control.
"Shadow Walk," Kyle whispered.
His body didn’t fade so much as it *thinned*. Light passed through him wrong. The Aegis-V plates went matte black, edges fraying into smoke. His shadow stretched, detached, and sank into the stream bed. Cost: 100 Shadow Energy. Remaining: 900/1000.
The hands swiped through where he’d been. They found only rippling water and a cold outline of mist.
[You’re untargetable to anything with lower Will,] Snow said. [But it won’t last if they hit you with area effects. Move.]
Kyle moved. As a shadow he slid under the stream’s surface, the viscous black water parting around him like he wasn’t there. He shot toward the cluster of hands at the center, where the hum was loudest. That was the source. If he could disrupt it, the rest might collapse.
He surfaced ten meters away, materializing behind a cluster of three hands. They hadn’t even turned yet.
"Shadow Bind," he said.
Concentrated strings of shadow snapped out from his palms, thin as wire, dark as tar. Cost varied with length and thickness. He kept them lean. Ten meters each. They wrapped around the wrists of the hands, yanked tight, and sank into the joints. The shadow strings pulsed once, feeding off his Shadow Energy. Remaining: 820/1000.
The hands jerked. Tried to pull free. The strings held, but they were fraying. These weren’t mindless slimes. Something was guiding them.
[Bind’s only buying you ten seconds,] Snow warned. [The thing underneath is pushing back.]
Kyle didn’t need ten seconds. He needed one.
He dropped into a crouch, both palms facing the water. The air temperature dropped. Dark flames licked to life in his hands, crawling up his forearms without burning him. The flames of the first great demon. Lv. 5. They were at their last stage before evolution, black and cold, swallowing light instead of giving it.
Cost: 150 Demon Energy per palm. He burned 300 total. Remaining: 2200/2500.
The hands screamed. Not with voices—with vibration. The hum turned into a shriek that ran through the water and up Kyle’s teeth.
He slammed both palms down.
"Divergence Flames."
Another 200 Demon Energy gone. The dark flames didn’t just burn. They split. One wave went left, another right, carving through the bound hands like they were paper. Where the flames touched, the hands didn’t char. They *unraveled*, shadow and muscle and ichor separating and collapsing into nothing. Hemorrhage stacks from Abyssal Reflex procced on two more hands that tried to flank him, shadow claw strikes tearing them apart before they reached Elara.
The stream went quiet. For one second.
Then the ground shook.
The center of the stream bulged upward. Mud and water exploded into the air as something massive pushed up from the bed. Not a hand. A torso. Ribs made of pale ash-bark, red spots glowing like wounds. No head. Just a hollow cavity filled with swirling red energy, same as the fruit in the trees.
[Okay, new threat identified,] Snow said, and for once she didn’t sound cheeky. [That’s not a blood puppet. That’s a graft. Someone fused Kraken’s flora with abyssal biology. It’s using the stream as a nervous system.]
Kyle backstepped, dragging Elara’s stone slab with his foot so it wouldn’t get caught in the surge. The creature’s ribcage opened like a flower. Inside, more hands grew, sprouting from the cavity walls, each one tipped with a shard of black glass.
It had no eyes. It didn’t need them. It felt vibration.
Kyle couldn’t Shadow Walk again immediately—cooldown was still ticking. He couldn’t outrun something that sensed movement through water. So he did the only thing left.
He fought on its terms.
"Shadow Craft," Kyle said.
He didn’t have shadows to collect yet, but he had something better: the black glass shards embedded in the creature’s hands. As the shards flew toward him, he reached out with his Will and *pulled*. Shadow Energy surged, 820 down to 640, as he shaped the incoming fragments mid-air.
They fused. Bent. Hardened. A crescent blade formed in his right hand, curved like a talon, edges humming with shadow affinity. +15% damage passively to anything shadow-aligned. He’d made weapons before, but never under pressure like this. The blade felt right. Balanced.
The creature lunged. The entire ribcage came at him, hands first.
Kyle met it.
He let the first wave of hands hit his left side. Demon Scales absorbed the impact, invisible devil plating flashing once as it regenerated medium tissue damage. Pain flared, then dulled. He pivoted on his left foot and drove the shadow blade up through the center of the ribcage with his talon-leg. Abyssal Talon Manifest ignored 25% physical defense. The blade ignored another 15% from shadow affinity.
The tip punched through the swirling red energy in the cavity.
The creature froze. The hum cut out. All the hands went limp and sank back into the water.
For three heartbeats, nothing moved.
Then the red energy imploded. A shockwave of heat and black wind rolled out, but it was inward, collapsing the creature into itself. The ash-bark ribs cracked, crumbled, and were sucked into the hole Kyle’s blade had made. The stream sucked down after it, water spiraling into the cavity like a drain.
Kyle yanked the blade free and stumbled back. His Demon Energy ticked down to 2000/2500 from the strain. His Shadow Energy sat at 640/1000. Killing Intent rose to 29.
The hole in the stream bed sealed itself. Mud collapsed inward. The water smoothed over as if nothing had happened. The red fruit in the trees dimmed, then pulsed again, slower now. Calmer.
Silence.
Kyle deactivated Shadow Walk. His body solidified, sweat freezing on his skin in Kraken’s cold air. He walked back to Elara without looking at the water. The Aegis-V suit beeped once.
[AEGIS-V SUIT ENERGY: 44%]
[DARK ENERGY FILTER: STABLE]
He knelt, checking her pulse. Still steady. Still breathing.
[You did it,] Snow said quietly. [That wasn’t a swarm. That wasn’t a patrol. That was Kraken’s immune system. You just killed a white blood cell.]
Kyle wiped the shadow blade off on the stone. It dissolved back into mist, the crafted shadow returning to the air.
"Good," he said. "Let it know I’m not prey."
[We’re not clear yet,] Snow replied. [The swarm felt that shockwave. They’re turning back. And whatever made that graft is going to know something took out one of its pieces.]
Kyle stood. He looked downstream, where the stream curved toward the ash forest. He looked back at the ridge, where vibrations were starting again, faint but growing.
"Then we don’t wait," he said. He lifted Elara, settling her against his chest. The Aegis-V clicked as it adjusted to the weight.
"Five minutes is up. Time to move."
He stepped out of the stream, water running off the suit in thick black streams. Behind him, the Heartworld pulsed once more, like a heartbeat. Like a warning.
Ahead, the ash trees waited. And somewhere in them, the gathering was still happening. Humans on Kraken. Blood puppets that weren’t vampire-made. A Nabakayak hunt.
Kyle’s right leg hummed. The shadow blade’s shape ghosted in his palm for a second before fading.
He had skills. He had energy. And now Kraken knew his name.
[Objective updated,] Snow said. [Find out more information of the blood puppets. Progress: 12%.]
Kyle started walking. The swarm could follow. Let them.
