"Arrrrr.. kyaa!"
The battle cries echoed through the hell dump. More green imps poured from the darkness, eyes glowing sickly yellow. Dozens of them. Then more.
Elara stood in front of Kyle and unconscious Yua, breathing hard. Sweat cut through the ash on her face.
"Just what I needed. More threats." She snapped her fingers. The last few fireballs split, but smaller this time. Weaker.
’Thud! Thud!’
More imps dropped. But for every one that fell, two more came.
’Right. Because of Kalkai Chamber.’ Her shoulders screamed at her. Her mana felt like sludge. That fight had drained 70% of her. She’d been running on spite and caffeine since.
A imp with a jagged bone knife leapt at her. She caught its wrist, twisted, and drove her dagger through its skull.
"Stay down," she growled.
Another came from the left. She was too slow. The knife grazed her ribs. Hot pain.
Kyle tried to push himself up. "Elara—"
"Don’t. Move." She didn’t look back. "I got this."
But did she? Her vision swam. The fireballs were flickering out. Her hands were shaking.
An imp tackled her legs. She went down hard, hitting the scorched ground. The air got knocked out of her.
"Grand finale," she whispered, raising a hand. One last big spell. Even if it killed her.
The imps circled, chittering. Victory in their eyes.
And then the wind stopped.
Everything stopped.
A pressure dropped over the hell dump so heavy the imps froze mid-lunge. The air turned cold. Then it smelled like lavender and ozone.
A voice. Calm. Royal. And furious.
"Get. Away. From. My. Daughter."
Light.
Not fire. Not blood. Pure white-gold light split the sky above them and crashed down like a spear.
*BOOM*
When Kyle could see again, the imps were gone. Ash. Just ash in perfect circles on the ground.
Standing in the middle of it was a woman.
Tall. Blonde hair like Elara’s but braided with silver thread. A long dress the color of midnight, trimmed in clover-green. And in her hand, a staff topped with a crystal that pulsed like a heartbeat.
She looked at Elara on the ground first. Her expression cracked for half a second. Worry. Relief. Then it was gone, replaced by ice.
"Mom?" Elara whispered. Blood on her lips. "No way..."
The woman — her mother — was already moving. She knelt, hands glowing as they hovered over Elara’s wounds. The cut on her ribs sealed. The bruises faded.
"Idiot child," she murmured, but her voice shook. "Running off to Kalkai Chamber alone. Fighting things you have no business fighting."
"I was looking for you," Elara shot back, weak but still her. "Took you long enough, Grand Duchess."
The woman’s eyes flickered. Amusement. Pain.
"And you found me." She brushed hair from Elara’s face. "Elara Vance of House Vance. My disappointment and my pride."
Kyle just stared. ’Grand Duchess? House Vance? Clover Council?’
The woman turned then. Golden eyes, same as Elara’s, landed on him. And on Yua behind him. She took in the burn on Kyle’s chest. The blood on Yua. The snapped thread still smoking.
Her expression hardened.
"And who are you?" she asked Kyle. Not unkind. But the weight of centuries was behind it.
Kyle swallowed. "K-Kyle. I’m... with her."
"With my daughter." It wasn’t a question.
[Host, scan complete.] Snow whispered in his head, panicked. [Threat level: Catastrophic. Do not antagonize. That is Grand Duchess Seraphina Vance. One of the 7 rulers of the Clover Council. Association of Witches and all things Magic.]
’Oh,’ Kyle thought faintly. ’That’s bad.’
Seraphina stood, helping Elara up with one arm. Elara leaned on her more than she’d ever admit.
"Association business," Seraphina said, voice carrying. "This area is now under Clover Council jurisdiction. Anything that comes near will be purged."
She looked past them. Into the dark. Where something big had been watching.
The deer.
It stepped out from behind the grey bushes, but it wasn’t laughing now. Its golden eyes were narrowed. Assessing.
"Grand Duchess," it said, voice smooth. "What a surprise."
Seraphina’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. "Abomination. You touched my daughter’s friends."
"I was invited," the deer replied. "By contract."
The air went still again.
Seraphina looked down at Kyle. Really looked. Then at the crystal in his chest.
"I see," she said softly. Dangerously soft. "Then we have a problem to discuss. In my domain."
She raised her staff. A circle of clover-green light opened in the air behind her. Clean. Stable. Nothing like the hell dump.
"Come," she told them. "All of you. Before whatever’s in that boy’s chest decides to hatch."
Elara grabbed Kyle’s hand. Her grip was tight.
For the first time in weeks, she didn’t look alone.
"Let’s go home," she said quietly.
And they stepped through.
The clover-green light swallowed them whole.
For a second Kyle felt like he was being pulled apart and stitched back together. His stomach flipped. The burn in his chest pulsed once, hard, like the crystal was protesting.
Then solid ground.
The air hit different immediately. Clean. It smelled like old books, rain, and something sweet. Lavender, maybe. No ash. No rot.
Kyle blinked.
They were standing in a courtyard made of white stone. Above them, the sky was a soft twilight purple, even though it had been night in the hell dump. Floating lanterns drifted by on their own. Towers with green roofs stretched into the clouds.
"Clover Council Domain," Elara muttered, still leaning on her mom. "Haven’t been here since I was twelve."
"And yet you remember it," Seraphina said dryly, but she didn’t let go. Two healers in green robes were already running toward them.
"Take her," Seraphina ordered, nodding at Yua. "And the boy. Check the crystal. Do not touch it."
"Yes, Grand Duchess." The healers moved fast, lifting Yua onto a stretcher that floated by itself. One of them paused at Kyle, eyes widening at the glow under his shirt.
"Grand Duchess, the readings—"
"I said do not touch it." Seraphina’s voice cracked like a whip. The healer bowed and retreated.
She turned back to the portal, which was still open. On the other side, the hell dump was visible. And standing at the edge of it was the deer.
It wasn’t following. Not yet. It just watched. Head tilted.
"You’re making a mistake, Seraphina," it called through. Voice calm. "That contract is older than your Council."
Seraphina stepped forward. The portal rippled. "Then let the Council judge it. You are not welcome in my domain, Abomination."
The deer smiled. "Pity. I was hoping to meet the famous Grand Duchess." It dipped its head. "We will talk again. When the boy wakes."
And with that, it turned and vanished into the dark.
The portal snapped shut.
Silence.
Seraphina let out a breath she’d been holding. Then she looked at Elara, then Kyle.
"Inside. Now." She gestured to the largest tower. "We’re going to have a very long talk about intercept contracts, possession, and why my daughter is bleeding in a hell dump with a boy who has a god sealed in his chest."
Elara squeezed Kyle’s hand once before letting go. "Told you she was scary."
Kyle could only nod. His legs felt like jelly.
As they walked, the floating lanterns above dimmed, like the whole domain was watching.
And somewhere, deep in Kyle’s chest, the crystal gave one quiet throb.
