Chapter 405: Survive!

The stone floor beneath Kyle’s boots felt almost insultingly solid. After hours of sinking into the scorched, yielding ash of the hell dump, stepping onto polished marble was a shock to his knees. He staggered, his vision swimming with stars as his body finally registered that the immediate threat of being torn apart by imps had passed.

"Steady," Seraphina said, though she didn’t reach out to catch him. Her attention was already fixed on the floating stretcher bearing Yua. She walked with a measured, deliberate pace, her midnight-blue dress trailing over the stone without gathering a single speck of dust.

"Mom, he’s running on empty," Elara said, her voice raspy as the two healers guided her toward a stone bench lined with velvet cushions. She tried to push their hands away, but a sharp look from her mother pinned her in place. "He pulled a divine thread through a high-grade beast. His core should be shattered."

"And yet it isn’t," Seraphina replied, coming to a halt before a set of massive, oak-and-iron doors carved with intricate vines. She raised her staff, tapping the butt of it against the floor once. The heavy doors swung inward without a sound, revealing a vast library-hall lined with thousands of leather-bound grimoires and glowing glass spheres that hovered near the vaulted ceiling. "Which means whatever is sitting inside him is currently keeping his heart beating out of self-preservation, not mercy."

Kyle swallowed hard, his throat raw.

[Kyle,] Snow’s voice vibrated softly in his mind, muffled, as if the dense magical ambient of the domain was smothering her signal. [Be cautious. The atmospheric mana here is locked down by a high-tier barrier. My scanning capabilities are reduced by nearly sixty percent.]

’Great,’ Kyle thought, dragging his feet as he followed Seraphina into the grand hall. ’Just me, a dormant cosmic parasite, and one of the seven most powerful witches alive.’

The healers placed Yua on a divan near the center of the room, immediately setting to work casting blue, thread-like arrays over her limp body. The deep cuts on her arms began to knit together under the soft light, though her face remained pale.

Seraphina turned to face Kyle. Up close, the resemblance between her and Elara was almost uncanny, but where Elara’s fire was chaotic and bright, Seraphina’s was cold, contained, and infinitely heavy. She raised a pale hand, her silver-threaded braid slipping over her shoulder as she gestured toward the glowing amber crystal embedded beneath Kyle’s sternum.

"Show me," she commanded.

Kyle hesitated, his hand hovering over the torn, blood-stained fabric of his shirt. "It... it reacts when people get close to it."

"I am not ’people,’ boy. I am the Grand Duchess of the Western Spire," Seraphina said, her golden eyes narrowing slightly. "Expose the mark."

With a quiet sigh, Kyle pulled back the scorched cloth. The crystal pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat, casting a warm, ominous glow across his bruised chest. Tiny black veins stretched out from the edges of the gem, spiderwebbing into his skin like root systems.

Seraphina stepped closer. She didn’t reach out to touch it, but she leaned in, her eyes reflecting the amber light. A faint ring of clover-green runes flared in her pupils as she analyzed the structure.

"An Intercept Seal," she whispered, her calm facade cracking just enough for a flicker of genuine shock to bleed through. "Crude. Violent. Forced into place by a mortal who had no business touching higher-dimensional energy." She looked up, meeting Kyle’s eyes. "Who put this in you?"

"I... I don’t know his name," Kyle said, his voice barely above a whisper. "It happened before I woke up in the lower sectors. I just... remember the pain."

"He doesn’t know, Mom," Elara interjected, leaning heavily against the armrest of her bench as a healer wrapped a glowing bandage around her ribs. "The deer was tracking him because of it. It said something about a contract."

"The Abomination speaks in half-truths to sow panic," Seraphina said sharply, though her brow remained furrowed. She walked over to a heavy mahogany desk, picking up a silver quill and tapping it against a blank parchment. The quill began to write on its own, scribbling rapid lines of text. "However, it was right about one thing. A seal of this nature binds the host to the entity inside it. If the entity wakes fully before your body is ready to contain it, you won’t just die, Kyle. You will become an anchor for a dimensional breach."

Kyle felt the room tilt slightly. "An anchor?"

"A doorway," Seraphina corrected coldly. "And my domain does not permit unregistered doorways."

She turned back to him, resting her hands on her staff.

"The Clover Council will convene in three days to decide what to do with you," she continued, her voice resuming its regal, unyielding tone. "Until then, you will remain in the lower quarters of the Spire. You will be fed, your friend will be healed, and you will not attempt to cast a single spell or manipulate your mana core. Am I clear?"

Kyle looked at Elara, who gave him a small, grim nod. He had no leverage here. No strength left to argue.

"Clear," Kyle muttered.

"Good." Seraphina motioned to two guards dressed in polished silver armor who had entered from a side door. "Escort him to the guest chambers. Apply the suppression wards to the doorway."

As the guards stepped forward, Kyle took a step back toward Yua’s divan, but one of the guards politely placed a armored hand in front of him, blocking his path.

"She will be cared for," Seraphina said, her tone softening just a fraction as she looked at Yua’s peaceful face. "House Vance does not abandon those who bleed alongside its bloodline. Go, rest."

Kyle let out a slow breath, turning to leave with the guards. But as he reached the threshold of the grand hall, the crystal in his chest gave a hard, violent throb—far stronger than before. A sharp pulse of heat shot through his ribs, making him gasp and clutch his chest.

For a split second, the bright lavender scent of the Spire disappeared, replaced by the faint, copper smell of drying blood and the low, reverberating echo of a laugh that didn’t belong to anyone in the room.

[Kyle!] Snow’s voice spiked in panic. [Internal temperature rising! The entity’s awareness is fluctuating!]

Kyle locked eyes with Seraphina one last time before the guards ushered him into the corridor. The Grand Duchess hadn’t missed the sudden flinch, nor the way the amber light had momentarily turned a deep, blood-red.

Her hand tightened on her staff until her knuckles turned white.

"Three days," Kyle whispered to himself as the heavy oak doors shut behind him, locking him in the quiet, pristine halls of the Spire. "I just have to survive three days."
