The dark cellar felt colder than before. Heavy stone walls oozed moisture, and the suppression runes etched into the archway glowed with a dull, sickening yellow light.
The guards threw Kyle onto the stone floor, the heavy iron door slamming shut with a deafening thud. Three distinct bolts slid into place, followed by the faint hum of reinforced magic locking down the room.
Kyle lay on his side for a long moment, struggling to draw air into his lungs. Every rib felt bruised, and the amber crystal under his shirt was scorching hot against his skin.
[Kyle, listen to me,] Snow’s voice cut sharply through the haze in his mind. Her tone lacked its usual robotic detachment; she sounded genuinely panicked. [Your internal mana network is heavily fractured. That outburst in the courtyard used up the last of your reserves. If the entity pushes one more time, your body will reject the seal entirely.]
"How long... do I have?" Kyle muttered, forcing himself up into a sitting position and leaning against the damp wall.
[With the suppression array draining the room? Less than twenty-four hours before your core collapses on its own,] Snow replied. [The Grand Duchess didn’t just double the guard; she set a slow-draining mana field inside this cell. She isn’t waiting for the Council. She’s letting the room drain you so you’re too weak to fight back when they execute you.]
Kyle let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Smart lady."
He looked at his shaking hands. The black veins hadn’t completely retreated this time; thin, web-like threads lingered under his fingernails and along his wrists. The dark energy inside him was growing hungrier, sensing his body’s weakness. And up above, forty-seven innocent people were sitting in an iron cage, waiting for dusk tomorrow to be burned alive.
A faint scuffling sound came from the high, barred window near the ceiling.
Kyle snapped his head up. "Snow?"
[It’s not mana,] Snow whispered. [Physical movement outside the high window. Someone is bypass-scaling the exterior wall.]
A shadow blocked the pale purple light streaming through the bars. A second later, a thin metal wire snaked down through the iron grate, dropping a small, glowing glass vial into the straw on the floor.
"Kyle," a voice whispered down through the bars. It was faint, barely audible over the whistling mountain wind.
"Elara?" Kyle scrambled over to the window, looking up. He could only see her boots clinging to the steep stone decorative lip outside. "What are you doing? If your mom catches you—"
"Shut up and listen," Elara hissed, her voice tight with strain. "She placed guards at every stairwell, but she forgot I used to climb these towers when I was ten. Drink what’s in the bottle. It’s a high-grade mana stabilizer from her private stash."
Kyle picked up the vial. The liquid inside glowed a deep, shimmering green. He pulled the cork and swallowed it in one gulp.
The effect was instantaneous. A cooling wave washed through his chest, soothing the burning heat around his sternum. The black veins on his wrists faded back beneath his skin, and his breathing instantly steadied.
[Mana network stabilizing,] Snow reported, a sigh of relief evident in her tone. [Core capacity recovered to thirty percent. That was high-tier restorative elixir.]
"Better?" Elara asked from above.
"Yeah," Kyle breathed, standing on tip-toe to get closer to the window. "Much better. Elara, your mother is going to kill those people tomorrow. She’s going to kill me, too."
"I know," Elara said softly. "The Council members are already arriving. I saw the airships from the Eastern Spire landing at the docks an hour ago. Mom isn’t just protecting the domain, Kyle. She’s terrified. The Council has been looking for a reason to strip House Vance of its seat. If they find out an uncontrolled entity entered her domain through me, they’ll destroy her house."
"So she’s sacrificing forty-seven people and me to cover her tracks," Kyle said, his chest tightening.
"I won’t let her do it," Elara said fiercely. "I didn’t drag you out of the hell dump just to let my mother incinerate you. Yua is conscious."
Kyle’s eyes widened. "Yua? How is she?"
"Weak, but her core is intact. The healers finished clearing the dark rot from her legs. She’s being held in the lower medical ward under light guard." Elara paused, the sound of wind whipping against her cloak. "Tonight, when the moon reaches its apex, the guard shift changes. I’m going to cut the power to the perimeter ward for ten seconds. That’s all you’ll get."
"What about the cage in the courtyard?" Kyle asked immediately. "I’m not leaving them behind."
"You can’t save everyone, Kyle!" Elara snapped, her voice cracking slightly. "If you try to break that iron cage, the alarm will alert the entire inner spire. Mom will be down there in three seconds flat, and she won’t hesitate to freeze you solid!"
"They helped us in the lower sector, Elara," Kyle said, his voice dropping into a hard, unyielding tone. "Marcus helped carry Yua when her leg was crushed. I promised them I’d get them out. If I leave them to burn, then I’m no better than the things in the hell dump."
A long silence hung between them from outside the high window. Only the sound of the howling wind filled the space.
"You’re an idiot," Elara whispered, though there was no malice in her voice. "A total, complete idiot."
"I’ve been told," Kyle replied quietly.
"Fine," Elara muttered. "The cage key is kept on the head warden’s belt. His name is Captain Vane—he’s the heavy-set guy with the scar across his jaw. I’ll stage a distraction near the east gate to pull the main guard patrol away. When the perimeter ward drops, break your cell door, get Yua from the medical wing, grab the key from Vane, and get the refugees to the lower utility portal."
"Where does the portal lead?"
"Outside the barrier," Elara said. "To the neutral mountain pass. From there, you run. You run and you never come back to Clover Council territory."
"What about you?" Kyle asked. "Your mother will know you helped us."
"Let her," Elara said bitterly. "She called me her disappointment anyway. Might as well make it official."
Before Kyle could answer, a loud gong echoed from the top of the main spire—a deep, resonant sound that vibrated straight through the stone walls.
"They’re starting the pre-trial setup," Elara warned, her boots slipping slightly on the outer wall. "I have to go before the patrol spots me on the roof. Apex of the moon, Kyle. Don’t be late."
Her shadow disappeared from the window, leaving Kyle alone in the dim room once more.
[Kyle,] Snow chimed in, her tone pragmatic. [The plan is extremely high-risk. Breaking through iron-bound doors, securing Yua, subduing an elite guard captain, and unlocking a forty-seven-person cage within a ten-second perimeter window carries a ninety-four percent chance of failure.]
"Then we better focus on the six percent," Kyle said, walking back to the cot and sitting down. He closed his eyes, focusing on the green energy flowing through his veins from Elara’s potion. "Snow, analyze the door’s locking mechanism. I want a full structural weak-point layout by the time the moon hits the peak."
[Understood,] Snow replied. [Commencing structural scan of target door. Target lock exhibits reinforced brass hinges and a low-grade magic rune array. Recommending a localized mana-strike on the lower hinge to bypass the main bolt.]
Hours crawled by in total darkness. The cold in the cell deepened, but Kyle remained motionless on the bed, holding his breath, listening to the distant shifts of the guards in the corridor outside. The crystal in his chest pulsed steadily, quieted for now by the potion, like a sleeping beast waiting for the door to open.
Then, deep within the spire, the magic torch outside his cell flickered.
The dousing hum of the suppression array inside the room suddenly snapped off. The heavy yellow runes on the doorway went completely dark.
Ten seconds.
"Now!" Kyle yelled.
He leaped off the cot, focusing every bit of recovered mana into his right leg. A faint golden aura wrapped around his foot as he drove a vicious side-kick straight into the lower hinge of the heavy iron door.
*BOOM!*
The stone surrounding the lower hinge shattered into dust. The heavy door groaned, twisting sideways out of its frame with a screech of tearing iron.
Before the two guards outside could even draw their swords, Kyle burst through the splintered wood, his fists swinging in the dark.
