The first guard barely had time to widen his eyes before Kyle’s mana-infused right hook caught him square under the jaw. The man’s helmet clattered against the stone wall as he went down like a sack of rocks.
The second guard lunged, his iron sword whistling through the damp corridor air. Kyle ducked under the blade, driving his shoulder into the guard’s sternum. The impact knocked the wind out of the man, pinning him against the wall. Before he could recover, Kyle grabbed the guard’s wrist, twisted it down, and slammed his head back into the stone. The guard sagged, unconscious.
[Time remaining on perimeter ward blackout: seven seconds,] Snow warned. [Move!]
Kyle didn’t waste a breath. He ripped a leather ring of keys from the second guard’s belt, threw the heavy sword aside, and sprinted up the spiral stairs. The potion Elara had slipped him was still working overtime, filling his muscles with a sharp, thrumming energy, but he could feel the amber crystal at his heart beating in sync with his pounding boots. It wanted out just as badly as he did.
He reached the landing of the lower medical wing just as a muffled explosion rocked the far eastern side of the spire. A plume of bright orange fire flashed through the high arched windows off in the distance.
’Elara’s distraction,’ Kyle thought, his chest tightening.
Shouts immediately echoed down the main corridors. Heavy bootsteps thundered away from the medical wing toward the east gate, exactly as Elara had planned.
Kyle slid around the corner into the infirmary hall. The two guards stationed outside the medical doors were distracted, staring toward the courtyard in confusion. Kyle didn’t give them a chance to turn around. He closed the distance in two silent strides, grabbing the back of their helmets and slamming them together with a sickening *CRACK*. Both men crumpled to the floor.
Kyle shoved the double doors open.
The medical bay was bathed in the soft, eerie green light of floating mana lamps. Dozens of empty cots lined the room, but near the back, strapped to a stone table covered in delicate silver runes, was Yua.
"Yua!" Kyle hurried to her side.
Her eyes snapped open. She looked pale, her dark hair matted with sweat, but the moment she saw Kyle, the panic in her face turned to sheer relief. "Kyle... you’re alive."
"Not for long if we stay here," he said, using his key ring to unlock the heavy iron cuffs binding her wrists and ankles.
Yua sat up, wincing as she rubbed her bruised wrists. Her gaze immediately fell on his torn shirt and the amber gem pulsing beneath his skin. "The crystal... it’s worse."
"I’m handling it. Can you walk?"
Yua swung her legs over the edge of the table, testing her weight. She stumbled slightly, but caught her balance against his shoulder. "I can run if I have to."
[Perimeter ward coming back online in two seconds,] Snow chimed in. [Security arrays are re-engaging!]
A high-pitched, metallic hum echoed through the walls. The floating green lamps in the infirmary flickered and flared a bright, warning crimson. Red light began pulsing along the floorboards in rhythmic patterns.
"Alarm’s up," Kyle gritted out. "We need to get to the courtyard before Captain Vane moves the refugees."
They bolted out of the medical bay, cutting through the lower servant halls to avoid the main thoroughfares. Every few seconds, the spire shook as magic alarms blared through the stone structure. The Clover Council domain, normally a sanctuary of quiet luxury, was descending into absolute chaos.
When they breached the outer doors into the main courtyard, the chill mountain air hit Kyle’s face like a slapped hand.
The scene was pure bedlam. Billowing black smoke rose from the east gate where Elara’s fireballs had blown out a guard post. Dozens of silver-armored guards were rushing toward the blaze, spears and swords drawn.
In the center of the courtyard, the iron cage sat under a harsh, spotlight-like beam of golden magic. Inside, the forty-seven refugees were screaming, pressing themselves into a tight ball as a massive, broad-shouldered man in ornate plate armor stood in front of the lock.
Captain Vane.
He had a thick, jagged scar running from his ear down to his jaw, and in his right hand, he held a glowing red branding iron. A heavy brass key ring dangled conspicuously from his thick leather belt.
"Quiet down, rat trash!" Vane bellowed, his voice echoing over the roar of the fire. "The Grand Duchess ordered an early purging! If the spire is under attack, we clear the biohazards *now*!"
He raised his free hand, channeling a circle of crackling red flame toward the cage door.
"VANE!"
The captain turned just in time to see Kyle barreling across the frost-covered courtyard like a runaway train.
Vane’s eyes widened, but he was an elite combatant. In a split second, he abandoned the branding iron and drew a massive, two-handed broadsword. "The parasite!" he roared, swinging the heavy blade in a horizontal arc aimed straight for Kyle’s neck.
Kyle didn’t try to block it. He couldn’t.
[Duck right!] Snow shouted.
Kyle dropped flat onto his stomach, skidding across the icy stone right beneath the sweeping blade. The air hummed as the sword sliced inches over his head. As Kyle slid past Vane’s legs, he reached out, hooked his fingers into the brass key ring on the captain’s belt, and ripped it free with all his weight.
"What—" Vane grunted, turning to stomp down on Kyle’s spine.
Before his heavy boot could land, a blue streak of lightning zipped through the air. Yua had scavenged a shattered guard staff from the floor and slammed the butt of it straight into the back of Vane’s knee.
The heavy armor cracked, and Vane went down on one knee with a roar of pain.
Kyle scrambled to his feet, kicking Vane square in the side of the head to keep him down. He didn’t wait to see if the captain was unconscious—he turned and sprinted straight to the cage lock.
"Kyle!" Marcus yelled from inside the bars, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on his face. "You came back!"
"I said I would!" Kyle yelled back, jamming keys into the massive iron padlock.
First key—too small. Second key—wrong shape.
Behind them, a terrifying pressure descended on the courtyard. The air turned so cold that Kyle’s breath instantly froze into mist.
"You dare bring rebellion into my home, boy?"
Grand Duchess Seraphina floated down from the highest tower balcony, her midnight-blue dress fanning out around her like the wings of a hunting bird. Her staff pulsed with an blinding, white-gold light that turned the night sky into midday.
Beside her, Elara was being held by two senior arch-mages, a glowing magic bind wrapped tight around her torso. Her face was bloody, but she locked eyes with Kyle and yelled, "OPEN THE DOOR, KYLE! RUN!"
"Elara!" Kyle gritted his teeth, his hands shaking as he jammed the third key into the lock.
*CLICK.*
The heavy iron latch swung open.
"GET OUT!" Kyle screamed, throwing the cage door wide. "Run for the lower utility portal! GO!"
The forty-seven refugees didn’t need to be told twice. They surged out of the cage like a dam breaking, spilling out across the courtyard toward the rear utility arches. Marcus grabbed a fallen guard spear to shield the elderly and children as they ran.
"Fools," Seraphina whispered from the sky. Her voice sounded like grinding glaciers. "You will all burn together."
She raised her staff. A massive, sun-like orb of pure white fire formed above the courtyard, so hot that the stone floor began to melt into slag instantly.
[WARNING,] Snow screamed in Kyle’s mind, the red interface flashing wildly in his vision. [Threat level: Extinction-class! Defensive capabilities: Zero! We cannot tank that spell!]
Kyle looked at the refugees fleeing for their lives. He looked at Yua, who was standing beside him, drawing on her last drop of mana to form a flimsy shield. He looked up at Elara, crying out as she struggled against her bindings.
Deep in his chest, the amber crystal gave a monstrous, violent shudder.
*Give it to me,* the low, ancient voice purred in his head, clearer than it had ever been. *Give me the wheel, little boy. I will swallow her sun.*
Kyle stared at the descending star of fire. He felt the cold iron of the key ring in his hand. He felt his heart beating—not like a human heart anymore, but like a ticking bomb.
He didn’t have three days. He didn’t even have three seconds.
"Snow," Kyle whispered, his eyes turning a solid, terrifying gold. "Release the safety limiters."
[Kyle, no! If I release the seal—]
"RELEASE THEM!"
Snow went silent for a microsecond. Then: [Limiter overriding... Entity containment at Zero Percent.]
Kyle stepped in front of Yua, threw his arms wide toward the falling sun, and let out a roar that wasn’t human.
A pillar of pure, pitch-black energy erupted from his chest, tearing the sky wide open.
