Jannah stared down at the small test kit resting in her palm, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The diamond on her ring finger caught the morning light, a blinding reminder of how fast her world was spinning out of control.
"I’m not doing this," Jannah blurted out, her voice breaking as she shoved the test kit back toward his chest. "I’m not ready for this, Dorrent. I can’t be."
Dorrent didn’t take it back. He closed his large fingers over hers, trapping the kit between their hands. "I’m right here with you, little physician," he said, his baritone dropping into a low, steady murmur. "I would have carried you for a full blood panel hours ago, but with Beron’s remaining rats still hiding in the shadows outside, it isn’t safe for you out there. This is the only way for now."
"You don’t understand!" Jannah cried out, tearing her hand from his grip and taking a frantic step backward. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring his sharp features. "I can’t handle this! Becoming a mother was never part of my plan. Ever! After everything that happened, after losing my parents, I’ve spent my entire life believing I was cursed. How can I bring a child into this dark, bloody world?"
Dorrent stepped forward instantly, closing the distance between them. He reached out and caught her face firmly between his broad palms, forcing her to look up into his fierce silver eyes.
"Listen to me very carefully, Jannah," Dorrent commanded, his voice dripping with absolute authority and unyielding warmth. "There is no such thing as a curse on you. Do you hear me? Not one damn thing. Being a mother to our child will be the best thing you will ever do, and you will be extraordinary at it. You think you’re alone in this? I am going to be standing right beside you through every single second of it. Every late night, every terrifying moment, every ache—I will carry it for you. You have my name, my fortune, my protection, and my entire life guarding you. Nothing in this world will touch you or this baby." He leaned down, his forehead pressing against hers, his breath hot on her lips. "I spent years living in hell, Jannah. Let me build a life with you. Give me this chance to be the man you and this child deserve."
Jannah’s breath hitched, her chest heaving as his intense words tore through her defenses. She swallowed down the lump in her throat, taking a deep, shaky breath before pulling her face away from his touch. She gripped the test firmly and turned toward the adjoining bathroom.
"I can do it for you," Dorrent offered smoothly, stepping after her with a dark, wicked glint in his eyes.
Jannah whirled around at the doorway, her face flushing crimson as she glared at him. "Ain’t no way in hell I’m letting you do it! Your perverted mind will only make things ten times worse!"
She slammed the bathroom door right in his face and turned the deadbolt with a sharp click.
Silence fell over the bedroom for ten agonizing minutes. Inside the bathroom, the quiet sound of running water echoed faintly before stepping back into stillness.
When the deadbolt finally slid back, Jannah stepped out into the bedroom. Her face was strangely pale, her lips pressed into a tight, hard line. She held the test strip flat in her palm, keeping it hidden from view as she walked up to where Dorrent stood waiting near the edge of the bed.
"Are you completely sure you’re ready for whatever you’re about to see on this?" Jannah asked, her voice dangerously quiet, her dark eyes searching his face.
"Of course I am," Dorrent answered without a single second of hesitation, his eyes burning with quiet anticipation.
Jannah held her breath and handed the plastic strip over to him.
Dorrent took it instantly, his eyes snapping down to the small rectangular window.
He froze.
The silence that filled the room became deafening. The victorious, proud expression on Dorrent’s face completely shattered. His broad shoulders went rigid, his jaw clenching so tightly the muscle ticked visibly under his skin. He stared at the single, solitary pink line glowing mockingly in the indicator window.
He looked up at her face, then back down at the strip, his brow furrowing in utter disbelief.
"Are you... are you for real right now?" Dorrent gritted out, his voice dropping an octave into a harsh, disbelieving whisper. "You’re... you’re not pregnant?"
"That is it," Jannah said flatly, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist as she looked away from his piercing stare. "I am not. It’s negative."
"I don’t buy this," Dorrent barked, stepping right into her space, his silver eyes flashing with a sudden, volatile storm. "What did you do, Jannah?! I felt your body, I smelled the change in you! I was so damn sure you were carrying my child!"
"What could I have possibly done?!" Jannah shouted back, her pride flaring up like gasoline on a flame. "Maybe I’m just infertile! Or maybe... maybe my body rejects you because I don’t love you at all!"
"Don’t lie to my face!" Dorrent roared.
Before she could step back, Dorrent lunged forward.
His frame slammed into hers, sweeping her off her feet and driving her down onto the soft duvet of the bed. Jannah gasped as his heavy weight instantly pinned her against the mattress. He trapped both of her delicate wrists above her head in a single, iron-tight grip, his massive body hovering directly over hers, completely blocking out the light of the room.
"Are you insane?!" Jannah shrieked, her chest heaving as she wriggled violently against his crushing grip. "Why are you behaving like this?! Are you seriously trying to force me to get pregnant right now?!"
"Because I don’t believe a single breath coming out of your mouth," Dorrent growled down at her.
His dominant Alpha pheromones flared violently into the air—a heavy, suffocating wave of intense winter frost, a possessive energy that flooded her senses. The sheer density of his aura washed over Jannah like a tidal wave, making her head spin and her core ache with an involuntary, maddening heat. Beneath him, she felt every hard line of his muscular body pressing into her soft curves. His broad chest rose and fell heavily against hers, his thigh wedged firmly between her legs, establishing a suffocating, intoxicating dominance that made her knees turn to water despite her rage.
To her utter shock, Dorrent reached into the pocket of his bathrobe with his free hand and pulled out a second, completely sealed, brand-new pregnancy test kit.
"You are going to do this test right here in front of my eyes," Dorrent declared, his voice a low, dark growl against her neck. "I am not letting you hide behind a locked door again."
Jannah’s eyes widened in sheer outrage as she felt his knee nudge her legs further apart. "Why the hell are you pinning me down like this then?!"
Dorrent leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear, his hot breath sending a violent tremor straight down her spine. "Because maybe I’ll just make you reach an orgasm right now and take the sample myself."
"You are completely insane!" Jannah spat, her face burning with a mixture of intense humiliation, overwhelming arousal, and fury. "There is no way in hell I will let you do that! When are you ever going to change and stop behaving like a unhinged animal?!"
"You drive me insane!" Dorrent barked back, his eyes flashing with a raw, agonizing vulnerability that caught her completely off guard. "You have no idea how badly I’ve waited for a positive test! You have no idea what it feels like to think I finally had a piece of you that was mine forever!"
