Jannah stopped thrashing, staring up into his tormented face, her breath catching in her throat. "Why can’t you just believe me?!" she whispered, her voice cracking.
Dorrent sneered, his grip on her wrists tightening just enough to hold her still without hurting her.
"Because I was once a brilliant doctor, Jannah," Dorrent revealed coldly, his eyes narrowing into two sharp slits. "And that test kit you handed me... it wasn’t yours. The chemical strip was cold and completely dry. It looks like it was done hours ago by someone else!"
Jannah’s heart violently slammed against her ribcage. The color completely drained from her lips. "You... you’re hallucinating," she choked out desperately. "You’re making things up!"
"If I’m hallucinating..." Dorrent purred darkly, leaning down until his lips almost touched hers, "...then take the fresh test right here before me."
Cornered, trapped beneath his massive weight, and completely overwhelmed by the crushing pressure of his aura, Jannah finally broke.
"Fine!" Jannah screamed, turning her head away from his intoxicating mouth. "Get off me! Just get off me!"
Dorrent didn’t move an inch. He kept his thigh wedged securely between her legs, looking down at her with a dangerous, calculating gaze. "Where are you going to get the urine sample right now when you just used the washroom ten minutes ago?"
Jannah glared up at him, her chest heaving violently against his. "You will just have to sit there and wait until I feel like urinating again!"
"Won’t that take hours?" Dorrent murmured, a dark, wicked smirk slowly curling onto his lips as his hand began to slide dangerously up the silk fabric of her inner thigh. "I can just help you speed up the process..."
"Touch me and I swear I will bite your finger off!" Jannah cursed furiously, using every ounce of her remaining strength to shove against his hard chest until he finally relented slightly, allowing her to push him back off the bed.
She scrambled to the opposite side of the mattress, pulling her sweater down, her breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps as she smoothed her disheveled hair.
Dorrent sat up slowly on the edge of the bed, his bathrobe sliding open slightly to reveal his broad chest. He just sat there, looking at her with a terrifyingly calm, heavy disappointment that cut deeper than any roar of anger ever could.
"Why did you lie to me, Jannah?" Dorrent asked, his voice dropping into a quiet, hollow baritone that echoed through the vast room. "Whose test kit did you sneak into my house?"
Jannah kept her back turned to him, clutching her arms tightly around herself, ignoring his question as if she hadn’t heard a single word.
"Do you really despise me that bad?" Dorrent pressed, his tone dripping with a dark, bitter ache as he stared at her rigid silhouette. "Are you really so disgusted by the thought of bearing my child... that you would resort to using a fake, negative sample just to convince me you aren’t carrying my blood?"
Jannah whirled around, her eyes flashing with a sudden, devastating storm of tears and burning hatred, her voice echoing off the ceilings.
"And what kind of a father would you even be, Dorrent?!" Jannah sobbed bitterly, her words cutting through the air like a poisoned blade. "When you don’t even care about your own life?!"
Dorrent stayed completely still on the edge of the mattress, his eyes locking onto her face. .
"Are you... actually worried about me?" Dorrent asked, his baritone dropping into a low, disbelieving whisper. "Is that what this entire breakdown is about, Jannah?"
"Don’t flatter yourself!" Jannah snapped back, her voice breaking into a harsh sob as she wiped her cheeks with the back of her trembling hand. She paced back and forth near the edge of the bed, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "With your reckless, suicidal nature, you don’t even deserve to be a father! Look at how you live your life! You walk right into a hail of bullets, you throw yourself into deadly traps, and you act like your body is made of indestructible iron! What if you get yourself killed tomorrow?! What if you die and leave me alone with a child?!"
She stopped pacing, her eyes flashing with pure, hysterical panic as she glared at him.
"Have you ever thought about that for even one single second?!" she yelled, her chest heaving violently. "If you die, this baby and I will be left completely alone in a cold, brutal world! We would end up living a miserable, agonizingly difficult life!"
Dorrent took a slow, deep breath. He stood up from the bed, his tall, muscular frame towering in the morning light as he adjusted the sash of his bathrobe.
"You don’t need to worry about a difficult life, little physician," Dorrent delivered calmly, stepping toward her with a smooth, unbothered confidence. "I have more wealth than entire nations. If anything—and I mean anything—ever happens to me, you and our child will still have every single luxury, comfort, and protection you could ever dream of for the rest of your lives."
"You really don’t understand a damn thing, do you?!" Jannah screamed back, tears cascading down her face as his words completely shattered her remaining composure. She pushed violently against his broad chest when he stepped too close, her small fists trembling. "You think money fixes everything?! You think throwing a mountain of gold at a child fills the hollow void inside their chest?!"
She shook her head rapidly, her voice dissolving into an agonizingly painful weep that echoed off the ceilings.
"I grew up without my parents, Dorrent!" Jannah cried out, her chest aching so violently she had to double over, clutching her heart. "I grew up knowing what it feels like to have your world ripped away in a single bloody night! I know the exact psychological damage, the rot, and the permanent trauma it causes to grow up without a mother and a father!"
She looked up at him through a blur of salty tears, her eyes filled with an unspeakable, ancient grief.
"Even though I had my grandfather... even though he loved me with everything he had and tried his absolute best to protect me... I always felt like something vital was completely missing from my soul! I spent every single day looking at other families, wondering why I was the broken one! You don’t know what I went through without my parents! You have no idea what it feels like to cry yourself to sleep every night, wishing you had a father to hold you when the world gets dark!"
Her knees gave out under the overwhelming weight of her own past, her fragile body collapsing downward.
Before her knees could hit the hard floor, Dorrent moved like a shadow.
He dropped to his knees in an instant, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her trembling body tightly into his lap. He pressed her head firmly against his chest, burying his face in her soft hair as her quiet sobs turned into heavy, body-wracking tears against his warm skin.
He didn’t pull away. He didn’t try to lecture her, nor did he offer any more arrogant talk about his immense fortune. He simply held her with a terrifying, absolute reverence, feeling her tears soak straight through the fabric of his bathrobe, his heart hammering in a steady, frantic rhythm against her cheek.
"I am so sorry..." Dorrent whispered into her hair, his deep voice thick with a raw, agonizing remorse that tore through his usual icy composure. "...I am so sorry that you had it so tough because of me."
