Chapter 448 - 447- The Depths of the Corroded Zone (2)

After the Minotaur died, Grey smiled bitterly before spitting out a mouthful of black blood.

He had also been affected by the poison he had released into the air. It was a specially formulated, fast-acting poison that took effect the moment it came into contact with the air. Even someone with a powerful physique would find it difficult to resist once they inhaled enough of it.

If Grey hadn’t ended the battle as quickly as he had, he would have been at serious risk of being poisoned as well.

Fortunately, the battle was over.

Grey reached into his storage ring and brought out a small medicinal bottle. He opened it without hesitation and tossed several pills into his mouth before swallowing them.

A warm medicinal energy quickly spread throughout his body.

His pale expression gradually recovered, and the unhealthy blackness beneath his skin slowly faded. His complexion soon returned to normal, allowing Grey to finally heave a sigh of relief.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Several strands of gray hair fell over his face, covering his eyes. Yet beneath those strands, his gaze remained utterly indifferent.

There was no excitement after defeating the powerful Minotaur. No sense of accomplishment.

Only calmness and tranquility.

The battle had ended, but the shadow had already begun devouring the Minotaur’s corpse.

The night before, the shadow had suffered considerable damage from that strange, bizarre existence that had ripped it in half in the other city. Although it had recovered to some extent since then, it was still far from its peak condition.

The Minotaur’s flesh and blood, however, were exactly what it needed.

As the shadow devoured the scattered remains, its body constantly twisted and expanded. Its usually emotionless gaze seemed to reveal a rare trace of delight and satisfaction.

It continued eating.

The Minotaur’s flesh had been scattered across a wide area by it’s’s final attack, with chunks of bloodied meat and broken bones lying among the damaged trees and vegetation.

Yet none of it escaped the shadow. Before long, every remaining piece of flesh and blood had been completely consumed.

The shadow returned to Grey’s feet, its body seemingly more solid than before.

Grey lowered his gaze and glanced at it briefly before turning his attention back to the battlefield. Looking at the destruction surrounding him, a hint of nostalgia appeared in his eyes.

Several years ago, he had also been in the Corroded Zone, surrounded by countless dangers.

Back then, survival had been simple. Fight to kill. And kill to survive.

Survive.

Every day had been a struggle against death. The blood of the Minotaur that stained his face and clothes reminded him of those distant days. For a moment, Grey seemed to see the younger version of himself fighting desperately against monsters in the darkness.

He sighed softly. Those days felt incredibly distant now. Yet some things never truly disappeared.

Grey bent down and picked up the broken axe that the Minotaur had left behind.

The weapon was strange.

Despite having suffered countless cuts and scratches during the battle, its metal remained incredibly tough. Even after being smashed and damaged repeatedly, it had not completely fallen apart.

A wave of decay mixed with the stench of blood immediately seeped into Grey’s nostrils when he lifted it.

His expression barely changed. He carefully examined the weapon for a moment.

He was almost certain that this axe could be classified as a superior weapon.

After God Descended, many of the materials that had once been considered extremely sturdy became useless.

The corrosive substance that filled the world was particularly destructive. Given enough time, it could corrode ordinary materials, causing them to become tainted before eventually turning completely useless.

Weapons that could withstand the corrosive substance to a certain extent were extremely valuable.

They were known as superior weapons. Grey had a feeling that this broken axe was one of them.

Even though its handle had been broken and its blade was covered in damage, its fundamental material remained intact.

There might still be some value in it.

Without hesitation, Grey picked up both the blade and the broken handle before placing them into his storage ring.

Violet, who had been watching everything from the beginning, didn’t say much.

She remained silent for several minutes. Grey eventually closed his eyes and stood quietly in the darkness, listening to the faint sounds coming from the depths of the Corroded Zone.

When he opened his eyes again, his gaze immediately turned toward the distant darkness.

Far ahead, the veil of darkness stood like an enormous boundary separating this region from the deeper parts of the Corroded Zone.

"Which direction?"

Grey’s low voice echoed softly. The Captain’s voice soon resounded in his ears.

Hearing her answer, Grey’s body instantly swayed. The next moment, he transformed into a blur and shot in a certain direction.

The battle with the Minotaur had been too intense. There was no doubt that the commotion would attract mutated creatures, and perhaps even bizarre existences.

Grey had no intention of remaining here and waiting for them to arrive.

He wanted to leave before the creatures in the surrounding area had enough time to reach the battlefield.

If it weren’t for the fact that the Minotaur had touched upon a certain scar buried deep within his memories, Grey would have simply ignored it and continued onward.

But now that he had killed it, a strange sense of calmness washed over his mind. It felt as though a chain that had been pulling at him for years had finally been severed.

And once that chain disappeared, Grey felt lighter. His thoughts became clearer, and his mind seemed a lot sharper.

The change wasn’t drastic, and an outsider probably wouldn’t notice anything different about him.

But Grey noticed it. His thinking had become somewhat clearer than before.

He didn’t say anything about it though, he simply continued forward with a cold expression.

The Corroded Zone remained shrouded in eternal darkness.

The plants and trees here had taken countless twisted forms, their branches stretching through the darkness like the limbs of monstrous creatures.

Some trees had grown upside down.

Others had fused together into strange masses of bark and flesh.

There were even some plants that seemed to move whenever Grey passed them, though he couldn’t determine whether they were actually alive or if it was merely an illusion caused by the darkness.

One could hardly distinguish between day and night in this place.

It was always dark and cold... and always dangerous.

After several long minutes of running and maneuvering through the twisted paths formed by the dense foliage, the veil of darkness gradually drew closer.

Yet the closer Grey got, the more uncomfortable he became.

An intense feeling of dread suddenly rose from deep within his body. His mind instantly became alert.

Grey’s footsteps slowed. He could feel it.

Several gazes had been attracted to his presence. They were watching him from the depths. From the darkness. And even places he couldn’t see.

Grey’s eyes narrowed slightly. He immediately crouched down and hid himself among the dense foliage.

But the feeling didn’t disappear.

Several seconds passed. Then several more. But the sensation remained.

It felt as though he was being watched from every single direction. Grey remained motionless for a while before finally speaking in a low voice.

"I guess this is why the depths of the Corroded Zone are said to be so dangerous."

His gaze swept across the surrounding darkness.

"Just standing here is enough to make my skin crawl."

He paused briefly.

"There are definitely powerful mutated creatures and bizarre existences wandering around these parts."

Grey slowly inhaled. His expression became solemn.

"The corrosive substance here is also becoming too dense."

The air itself seemed to carry an invisible threat. Every breath brought corrosive substance into his body.

If it weren’t for the shadow constantly consuming the corrosive substance he inhaled, Grey wasn’t sure he would be able to continue advancing.

He lowered his voice.

"Do you have anything to tell me before we enter the depths?"

For several seconds, there was silence. Then Violet’s voice answered him.

"Yes."

Her tone was unusually serious.

"Be very careful."

Grey’s eyes narrowed.

"I can sense various hidden entities inside that veil. However, they are located even deeper within the Corroded Zone."

Violet paused for a few seconds before continuing.

"But it seems like we won’t have to go too deep." Grey remained silent, listening carefully.

"The feeling I’m getting from the item tells me that it’s closer to the edge of the veil. We shouldn’t have to waste too much time searching for it before we can leave."

Hearing this, Grey’s gaze became even calmer. The item was close.

That was good enough.

As long as they didn’t have to venture too deeply into the veil, the danger would be considerably lower although still abnormally high.

Grey took one final look at the darkness ahead.

Then, without another word, he suddenly rushed out from his hiding place. His body transformed into a fleeting blur as he sped toward the veil.

He did not activate his Special Brilliance form because there was no need.

The amount of corrosive substance in the air had already reached an astonishing level. If Grey activated his Special Brilliance form now, the time limit of the technique would be shortened drastically.

More importantly, recovering his spirit energy would be several times more difficult. There was hardly any spirit energy in the surrounding air.

Under normal circumstances, Grey could absorb spirit energy from his surroundings to replenish what he had consumed.

But here, there was almost nothing to absorb. Every bit of spirit energy he spent would have to be recovered through other means.

Therefore, Grey suppressed his aura and maintained his physical speed instead.

His figure moved silently through the dense vegetation. The veil of darkness grew closer.

And with every step he took toward it, the feeling of danger in his heart became stronger.

Grey’s eyes remained cold. He knew that the moment he entered the veil, things would become completely different.

But he didn’t stop.

Whatever was waiting for him inside, he would face it. After all, he had already come this far.

There was no reason to turn back now.
