Vardren’s next breath never left the black mist.

It climbed from his shoulders over his throat and face, then poured across his chest, wounded side, and folded left leg. Air from the drain pushed south. The mist pressed north, thick enough to erase the Core’s pale reflection from his skin.

His jaw strained beneath Severin’s right palm. Tendons stood out in his neck. His left boot scraped a finger-width across the stone and stopped.

The resistance changed.

No muscle moved, but pressure still drove outward through the mist, trying to tear free without Vardren’s body.

His left fist stayed locked in Vardren’s hair. His right hand kept the jaw shut. He willed the black mist closed.

A broken breath died inside it.

[Void Devour successful.]

[Target: Vardren Korr]

A guard’s spear haft creaked beyond the choke. Alicia still blocked the workers on the right. Saelith watched the dark stone above the drain. The sealed case lay beside the hauling bars, and the Core shone behind the disabled rig.

Vardren could wait.

Store.

[Target: Vardren Korr]

[Stored in Void Vault.]

The black mist snapped inward.

Vardren vanished with his bloodied coat and armor. Severin’s hands closed on empty air. Core light filled the space his body had occupied.

Marienne’s breath caught.

Her shoulders went still before any of her guards moved. She looked from Severin’s empty hands to the blood on the stone, then to the Core behind him.

"Is he alive?"

"Yes."

"Can you return him?"

"When I choose."

Her mouth tightened. "Then my people don’t take another step until I know what else you intend to remove."

"Good." Severin bent, picked up Wisdom’s Edge with his right hand, and stepped clear of the brass plate. "No one touches the brass or resets the rig. Alicia keeps the workers. Put a guard on the outer bend. Leave the 2 bodies outside where they fell."

Marienne turned to the guards behind her. "You. Outer bend. Call before you engage anyone. The rest hold the choke, and keep your hands off every chain in this room."

The guard swallowed, adjusted his spear, and left at a quick walk.

Alicia stood between the workers and the chamber, her silver tail low behind her calf. "They’re staying back, Master. None of them crossed your line."

A worker pushed himself upright too fast. His boot came down on the darker stone near the left edge.

"Left. Hollow," Saelith said.

Alicia seized the back of his coat and hauled him onto dry ground before his weight settled.

"I only wanted to see—"

"Master told you to stay back. Sit."

The worker saw the blood where Vardren had vanished and sat.

Saelith kept her boots away from the drain lip. Her shoulders remained stiff around the ache beneath her ribs, but her attention stayed on the water slipping under the choke.

"Flow’s steady," she said. "No debris."

Severin looked through the chamber. The broken links lay inside their lanes. The fixed collar hung slack against its braces. The tunnel beyond the guards stayed empty, and no hand had reached the Core or brass plate.

How long once I choose Digest?

[Noema: My lord, the current estimate is less than 1 second. Storage grants no benefit.]

Severin’s fingers tightened around Wisdom’s Edge. He loosened them and walked back toward the counterweight frame.

Vardren’s heavy single-edged sword lay where it had struck the stone, dark metal streaked with blood and dust. Its edge rested too close to the fixed brass for anyone to drag it free safely.

Black mist spilled around Severin’s boots. It moved against the air from the drain, curled beneath the sword without touching the frame, and smothered the scrape of metal as the blade shifted.

The mist tightened. The sword vanished alone.

Marienne watched the bare stone beside the frame. "Only the sword."

"The frame stays."

Her attention shifted to the Core. "And that?"

"Still yours."

Her gaze paused on his hand around Wisdom’s Edge before returning to the empty floor.

"That case is evidence from my chamber."

It lay beside the hauling bars, its strap twisted from Teren’s failed escape. Dust filmed the leather. Blood darkened a corner, but the lock and seal were still visible.

Marienne started forward.

"Stop."

She did.

"I need the seal checked before that disappears too," she said.

Severin looked to Saelith.

"Dry path on the right," Saelith said. "Don’t cross the dark seam."

"They’re not moving, Master," Alicia added.

Severin lowered Wisdom’s Edge, keeping its point away from Marienne. "Take the dry path. Check the seal. Don’t open the lock."

Marienne crossed without touching the brass or the drain. She crouched beside the case and studied the strap, lock, and seal without laying a hand on any of them.

"The seal’s whole. The lock’s closed." Her eyes followed the twisted strap. "Someone nearly tore that off."

"Back."

Her chin rose a fraction. She held his gaze as she stood, then returned to the dry stone in front of her guards.

Severin opened his left hand.

Dense black mist rolled over the case. The buckles clicked before the sound vanished. The mist covered the leather, strained strap, lock, and the seal Marienne had just examined, then contracted and left clean stone.

"It comes back unopened," Marienne said.

"It won’t open without you there."

She looked at him instead of the empty stone. "Good."

Alicia went still, her ears aimed at the tunnel.

"Someone’s coming, Master."

Boots struck the outer passage. The guard reappeared beyond the choke, breathing hard, spear held low.

"Outer bend’s clear. No one touched the 2 bodies. Gate’s quiet."

"Hold the bend," Marienne said. "Shout before you come back through."

"Yes, ma’am."

She pointed to a gray-haired worker behind Alicia. "You set the west support?"

"The lower brace, ma’am."

"Stand ready. Hands off until I say."

The worker glanced at Severin, then at the Core. "Yes, ma’am."

Marienne faced the cradle. "My Core stays where it is."

"It stays."

Her gaze shifted to Vardren’s blood. She held his gaze for a moment, then turned back to the Core without another question.

Water whispered beneath the choke. The brass stayed dark. The guard’s boots faded toward the outer bend while Wisdom’s Edge rested low in Severin’s right hand.

He turned his attention inward.

He found Vardren exactly where he had left him.
