Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 67: Eight Names from a Dead Dragonkin

The intent had barely formed when the System answered.

[Digestion Target: Vardren Korr]

[Digestion initiated.]

Nothing changed in the chamber.

Wisdom’s Edge remained low in Severin’s right hand. Cold air continued to slip from the drain. Behind Marienne, a spear point rasped across stone.

"Hold," she said.

The sound stopped.

Inside the Vault, Vardren’s body and soul came apart.

[Digestion Target: Vardren Korr]

[Digestion Progress: 100%]

[Digestion complete.]

Only Vardren’s bloodied coat and armor remained in the Vault, stored together and empty. Vardren’s heavy sword remained separate. The route case stayed sealed.

Then the first name appeared.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: C — Refined Skill]

[Skill Name: Command Relay]

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Name: Perimeter Ward]

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: C — Refined Skill]

[Skill Name: Glamour Mantle]

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: C — Refined Skill]

[Skill Name: Waypoint Array]

Those 4 names matched what Severin had seen.

Command Relay belonged to the clipped order that sent 3 people moving. Perimeter Ward matched the dust that stopped Teren at its edge. Glamour Mantle explained the attention Vardren had built around his coat, sword, posture, and voice. Waypoint Array belonged to the darkened brass and folded air.

The names gave Severin functions and limits, not Vardren’s practice. Each depended on people, boundaries, appearances, or anchors Vardren had prepared before Severin entered the chamber.

The next names hadn’t shown themselves in the fight.

[Skill Name: Battleweb Calculus]

[Skill Name: Siege Hand]

Together, the hidden set exposed the shape of Vardren’s operation: prepared routes, weapons arranged for a team, reports gathered into a battlefield picture, and heavy machinery handled in sequence.

That was as far as the understanding went. No route, weapon, report, or machine had appeared with the names.

[New Trait Acquired.]

[Trait: Dragonkin Dense Load Frame]

[New Trait Acquired.]

[Trait: Dragonkin Vertical-Pupil Tracking]

[New Trait Acquired.]

[Trait: Dragonkin Vestibular Shock Bracing]

The 3 patterns remained available without altering his body. He knew what each could change. He hadn’t learned how any of them would feel in motion.

[Noema: My lord, digestion completed in 0.202 seconds. All 8 captured Skills acquired without duplication.]

[Noema: Vardren Korr’s 3 Dragonkin trait patterns are available and untested. His memories remain accessible only through Void Recall.]

[Noema: 10,352 Core Essence entered the Void Reserve.]

Pale light kept spilling from the Core. Water whispered beneath the choke. Around the chamber, every guard remained where Marienne had placed them.

New Skills tugged at Severin’s attention. He left them untouched. The chamber wasn’t a training yard, and Marienne’s guards weren’t tools.

"Master?"

Alicia’s silver ears had turned toward him, but she hadn’t left the workers.

"Keep them there."

Her tail eased behind her calf. "Yes, Master."

Saelith watched the water slip beneath the stone lip. "The current didn’t shift."

"Good."

Marienne checked the Core before she looked at him. Its pale light held steady. The fixed collar remained slack, and the brass plate stayed dark.

"Vardren won’t be returned," Severin said.

Her gaze sharpened. "You said he could be."

"He could."

Marienne looked at the blood on the floor. "Then you could’ve warned me before you destroyed evidence."

"It wouldn’t have changed my choice."

"No." Her eyes came back to him. "But it would’ve changed mine. What did you get?"

Boots struck the outer passage in a broken run.

The guard at the bend called first. "Messenger! Copperglass worker!"

"Bring them to the mouth," Marienne ordered. "No farther."

The messenger appeared behind the guard with mud on his trousers and a tied bundle crushed against his ribs. He tried to speak before he had enough air.

"Ma’am, the holders came in together and the counting room—" His breath failed. He swallowed, bent at the waist, then forced himself upright. "The Copperglass trade account. The west weigh account. More behind them. They’re presenting sealed withdrawal notes and demanding payment now."

Marienne’s gaze dropped to the bundle.

"Have we paid any?"

"The first clerk stalled them. I don’t know if the other desk—"

"Don’t guess."

"No, ma’am."

She reached for the bundle. The messenger surrendered it without crossing the chamber line. Seal edges pressed through the wrapping cord, clean enough to pass at a hurried desk.

"Go back," Marienne said. "Anything still on a clerk’s desk stays there. Number the notes as they arrive. Keep the holders inside if they’ll wait quietly." She looked at the guard. "You go with him. No runner comes alone."

The messenger blinked. "All payments, ma’am?"

"Any payment that hasn’t left our hands. Move."

He turned too quickly. The guard caught his shoulder before he struck the wall, then pushed him toward the bend. Their fast walk became a run when the footing widened.

Severin watched the tunnel, not the papers. "Did they arrive together?"

"Close enough." Marienne tested the cord but didn’t open the bundle. "Different accounts, same morning, seals good enough for a hurried clerk. Let 1 payment leave and the rumor reaches the street before noon. Then everyone who fears being last asks for coin."

"They’re starting a run."

"Trying to." Her jaw tightened. "They couldn’t take the Core, so they’re going after the accounts."

The urge to search Vardren’s memories came sharp and immediate. A payer, a meeting place, a route between the mine and whoever waited beyond it might be buried there.

But Vardren’s memories would give him Vardren’s version, not proof. Without the right question, Severin could come away with the Dragonkin’s certainty and miss the useful detail. He left the memories untouched.

Severin looked to the guards at the chamber mouth. "Keep the chamber sealed. Nothing touches the Core or the rig. Leave the 2 bodies outside until Marienne’s people record them."

Marienne turned to the gray-haired worker.

"The lower brace still needs a handoff," she said. "After that, I want every account copy and every clerk’s statement. I won’t walk into the counting room on a runner’s breath."

"Finish the chamber. I’m coming when you move."

Her gaze held his for a moment before dropping to the tied notices in her hand.

"Then you’ll hear the figures from the clerks who counted them."

Severin nodded.

Marienne turned toward the gray-haired worker and began the handoff. The seals in her fist stayed unbroken.

More withdrawal notes were already waiting in the counting room.
