Lucy’s voice immediately caught in her throat with a sharp squeak, as she completely froze up at the accusation. Valerie was hardly much better.

Her lips stretched into an uneasy smile as she let out a half-hearted chuckle.

"C-celebrities? What are you talking about? We haven’t... We haven’t done anything today." She stuttered nervously, not even coming close to convincing herself of her innocence nevermind the Russian, who simply glared at the pair of them.

"Don’t think that because I am big man with accent, that I am stupid." He scoffed, before placing a tablet on the counter.

It was frozen on the image of the pair of them, just after the battle had concluded. It was one of many stories that were currently running about the pair and the harrowing encounter with the monster, discussing whether or not the Enforcers were truly able to keep the people safe and so forth.

But importantly, the freeze frame was of the disguised Valerie and Lucy, which only further confused them.

"Wh-what are you talking about? That looks nothing like us. You might be able to change hair colour quickly, but that girl has a completely different bone structure to me." Valerie insisted, a little more convincing this time.

However the Russian Smith simply clicked his tongue in annoyance.

"You seriously expect me to believe this? Ridiculous. I did not question it the first time I saw it, for it is my business not to ask questions. I get all sorts in here, and its easier not to know.

But if you are going to go out and cause a scene, try not to do it whilst you are dressed up like some kind of devil thing. Or do you expect me to believe that someone else is dressed up like that too?"

He tossed the tablet down, gesturing to it in his frustration as if it made any sense with what he was talking about.

The two girls glanced at each other, sharing a confused and concerned frown. Lucy touched her charm, which was definitely still working, before they looked back at Smith.

This time, when Valerie played dumb, it wasn’t an act and was actually convincing.

"Devil? What are you talking about?"

"Yes, Devil. Is that not what she is supposed to be with the horns and the tail? Like I said, I do not ask unless it affects my business. But dressing like that is obvious, and if it brings attention here, it will affect business."

Valerie frowned deeper, as she subtly slipped her hand into her pocket. She wrapped her fingers around her disguise gem, just like Lucy wore, and pressed it against her palm as she activated it.

Her appearance shimmered, and the girl that appeared on the tablet took Valerie’s place in the room. It was a change sudden enough that it caused Lucy to flinch ever so slightly and frown deeply, but Smith didn’t react.

Valerie had been keeping her eyes on him the entire time. His lack of reaction was not that of someone who was expecting it, or simply had good control of their emotions. It was that of a blind man to a flame being lit in his face. That is to say, Smith didn’t react because he didn’t see anything to react to.

In his eyes, Valerie hadn’t changed one bit.

True sight. That was the phrase that immediately entered Valerie’s mind. It was one they had to deal with before, when they had been fighting the Dragon. Vestra’s Illusions had been completely useless against such a creature, because it simply saw right through the illusions to what was reality.

Dragons, and certain creatures on the same level as them, naturally had such a sight. It was also a spell that could be cast by followers of the Lord of Truth, although that was temporary.

It was also a mutation. Just like the mutation that turned eyes blue or hair blonde. It was exceptionally rare in the world of Dawd, to the point that many took it as a blessing from the Truth bringer himself.

To think, that such a mutation could occur in their world too. Hidden for god knows how long, until illusions came along for them to see through.

"You know what, you’re right. We apologise deeply for any issues we might have caused to your business for our indiscretion. We thought we handled it, but it seems some of our methods aren’t as secure as we thought."

Valerie immediately apologised with a bow of the head. She caught Lucy giving her a confused look out of the corner of her eye, but quickly waved her off with a gesture that said ’talk later.’

"Now, Do you have our equipment ready? I know you said tomorrow, but we will understand if you had trouble with it."

"Trouble? Bah, No such thing for me." He scoffed, waving her off as he rose from his chair. He disappeared into the back for a few minutes, before returning with the armour displayed on a mannequin.

"No trouble but... I have never seen this metal before. This is definitely no heirloom. Where did you get it? I must know."

Although his question sounded angry and demanding, that was partly because of his accent and slightly broken English. What Valerie heard in those words was a fish, nibbling at the lure, just waiting to be reeled in and snagged.

A sly smile spread across her lips, as she gestured to the tablet still showing their images.

"I got it from the same place we learned how to do all of that wonderful stuff. Let me tell you a little tale of a game known, as Dawn of Divinity."

When Valerie finally finished her tale of magic and monsters, concluding with the events of this very day, Smith leaned back in his chair with a pensive look in his eyes. He glanced to the side, peering at the armour as if he was imagining the hell that they had found it within, and the mannequin as the demonic warrior that had once worn it.

Whilst that distant look was still in his eyes, Valerie leaned on the counter as her sly, shark-toothed smile widened further.

"You can get more. If you want, that is."

His eyes immediately regained their luster as they whipped towards her, silently screaming for answers, to which Valerie lightly chuckled. She pulled another demon sword from her sleeve, not bothering to hide how she did it at this point, as she showed off the blade to him.

Even without holding it, the expert could see it was the real deal.

"We have plenty more where this came from. And not just this alloy. We have others. Others that you have definitely never seen before, that this world has never seen before.

In fact... I get the feeling that you might even want some of the raw material, so you can practise making something yourself. A service I would very much like you to carry out for us, if that was the case."

"If it was... What price would you pay for such a service?"

Valerie couldn’t help let out a barking laugh at that suggestion. Even giving him what he wanted, he was still in the mindset that she was the customer and that he held the power.

"Ha, that’s funny. No... Such an offer is not one that I give to anyone. Only to someone that has the skills and expertise that I can rely upon.

If I was going to pay you, it would not be through a commission, but as an employee. I want you to join us, to work for us. You get to work with these metals and discover the truth of the world as it unfolds, and you get safety."

"Safety?" Smith muttered, narrowing his eyes.

"Oh yes. Because you see monsters like that," Valerie said, pointing to the tablet, "are not one of a kind. More will come. More are coming, and we need the equipment to stop them. So if you can be the one that supplies us with that equipment, then we would have no trouble protecting you from all of those coming monsters.

As well as giving you the opportunity to discover a wondrous new world with that new found safety.

So, what do you say Mr. Smith? Do you want the job?" Valerie asked with a wide, sharks smile as she reached her hand out towards him, waiting for him to shake it.

Who needs hypnotism, when you have true influence and a touch of coercion.
