Valerie slammed her shoulder against the door and immediately winced as the pain burst through her shoulder.

Stumbling back, Valerie gave the door a few more firm kicks before slumping back against the opposite wall with a heavy sigh.

"Aww, Looks like someone doesn’t want you peeking. Maybe he’s embarrassed." Her reflection in one of the well polished door handles mocked her, before laughing cruelly.

"Will you shut up?!" Valerie hissed at her reflection, which just made it cackle more.

"It’s not Percy shutting me out. I don’t think at least. This feels different. Like there is something else here..." She muttered to herself, before a strange cracking sound caught her attention.

Valerie whipped around, her eyes locking onto a door a few paces down the corridor and immediately rushed to it.

In the very middle of the door, the wood had split, and from it a rot spread outwards like an abomination creeping out of its cavernous lair.

It spread across the doors surface, blackening it and warping it into a disgusting midnight purple wood that seemed to breathe as it expanded and shrank. That breathing, and the way the knots in the wood twisted themselves to vaguely resemble screaming faces, reminded Valerie heavily of the disgusting trees that often grew outside of the portals.

The same type of tree that Ren had taken and planted on their land, after purifying it.

She twisted the rusted brass handle and peeked inside of the door to find herself in the midst of the coffee shop where she had first met Kaleigh. In fact, she was within that exact memory.

Slowly moving inside, she half paid attention to Percy’s memories of their conversation, smiling softly at the way her laugh sounded through his ears and the way the memories often darkened or lost more of their detail whenever she smiled.

He was just too cute for words, sometimes.

When Kaleigh came in, complaining and bitching, Valerie rolled her eyes at her attitude. She couldn’t help but chuckle at the twisted way that he remembered her, giving her monstrous features and crazy eyes suiting an insane stalker like her.

But just as Valerie was laughing to herself, the memory around her glitched. The very next moment, things had changed.

Percy was no longer seated, but instead was stood beside Kaleigh who had been given forced and exaggerated angelic features, as if something was trying to replicate the way that he saw Valerie without entirely understanding why he felt that way.

Percy had his arm around Kaleigh’s waist, and a smile that was not his own on his face as he spoke robotically.

"Valerie, I would like to introduce you to my girlfriend, Kaleigh. She is my Queen. I love her more than anything. I would do anything she asked."

His tone was as dead as his eyes as he spoke, before the memory glitched again. Rewinding itself back to the start of Kaleigh’s introduction as it repeated it over and over, trying to drill the monotonous words in.

Valerie was so caught off by the twisted nature of what she was seeing, of her friend being turned into some demented meat puppet that was forced to recite a demented script straight out of a terrible fan-fiction, that she failed to notice the thing wrapping around her leg until it was too late.

Her face slammed into the floor as her legs were whipped out from underneath her, before she was ripped out of the room once again.

She smashed into the wall, the door slamming behind her, but she didn’t stop there this time. The thing - which was a disgusting and slimy black tendril - dragged Valerie down the corridor, her body bouncing off of the floors and the walls.

She dug her fingernails in, scraping ruts into the floor, and grasping at door frames whenever she could.

When she finally got a firm grip on door frame, her body lifted off the ground and suspended vertically, as the thing dragged at her ankle. She grit her teeth, feeling like it was about to rip off her leg, as more doors around her cracked.

Each one that gained cracks, were quickly joined by the putrid spread of rot creeping into their wood and distorting the memories that they protected.

"You fight... You try to save... But you are weak... You will be mine... Just like him." A distorted voice echoed throughout the corridor, its words were little more than a whisper, and yet they were deafening.

The voice was layered, speaking each word just ever so slightly out of sync, and all of them in a different language.

Just those few words alone, sent shivers down her spine. She could feel the overwhelming power the owner of the voice held, and even worse... she felt that it was just a fraction of what it truly held.

Just that fraction alone was... horrifying. It made her feel small. So pathetically small and weak. Compared to this voice, she wasn’t even a mouse. She was a tiny speck of bacteria, so pathetic enough that she could be snuffed out with just a finger tip, and even that would be overkill.

The tendril wrapped around her leg snaked up her body, slipping under her clothes and slipped up her stone cold spine. It twisted around her neck, choking the feeble life out of her, before the tip pressed against her ear and slipped inside.

Valerie’s eyes rolled back into her head, her face twisting with pain as she let out choked cries, as the tendril wrapped around her mind. She could feel the cold, slimy worm inside of her, and the chill of its slime as it spread over her brain like a disease.

Her eyes turned black, and the rot that spread across the doors started to creep from her eyes and spread across her skin. Wherever the rot spread immediately blackened and took on the mucus covered, disgusting texture of a slug.

"What are you doing?! Are you just going to sit there and let it do this to us? Fight you miserable worm! Fight it! Fight! It!"

Valerie’s reflection screamed, slamming its fists against the ’wall’ of its reflected existence, yet no matter how loud it shouted, Valerie could not hear a single word that it said. Which was fine, as it wasn’t talking to her.

"Fine." Another copy of Valerie’s voice spoke with a chilling calm and regal poise. The next moment, her shadow opened its pure white eyes, before it pulled itself off of the ground.

It glanced uncaringly down the corridor, where the other end of the slimy tendril disappeared and where a thousand unblinking eyes stared back at her, before the shadow sliced its hand across the tendril.

Valerie’s body dropped as the severed tendril slithered back into the depths of the shadows, where the eyes watched silently. Each of the thousands of them filled with confusion and suspicion.

The shadow turned its attention back to Valerie, the rot still spreading across her feeble body, before it simply plunged its hand into her chest, wrapped its fingers around her heart and crushed it.
