"I have to say, this Golden Throne is surprisingly comfortable. One look and you can tell it suits me…"
Eden sat upon the Throne, feeling rather at ease. He was even a little reluctant to get up.
After all, the Golden Throne had now lost its function of gathering psychic power. It was just an ordinary throne.
No, it should be said that it was the Golden Throne symbolizing humanity's supreme authority, especially at a moment when the Primarchs and warriors were half-kneeling and offering their reverence.
Sitting upon the Golden Throne, even if he was not the Master of Mankind, he was close enough.
"This feels amazing!
"The Dark King has been dealt with, there's no need to worry about the toilet exploding anymore, and humanity has a bright future ahead."
A victory tune seemed to ring through Eden's head in a daze.
The Golden Throne might have been a trap, but for the Imperium, it was almost the same as an Imperial Seal.
Who would not get dizzy sitting on it? Even Horus had been dead set on getting a turn.
And now, it was he, the Savior, who had truly sat upon it.
For more than a century, the Golden Throne had been on the verge of collapse. He and humanity had faced a mortal crisis, never daring to relax for even a moment, always walking on thin ice.
Now, all of that had become the past. No one needed to live in fear anymore. Everyone could finally sleep soundly.
Not only that, but through this campaign, he had completely established his authority and become the Master of Mankind in name as well as fact.
Even the Primarchs had accepted all of this. They had accepted his leadership and would work together to shine for the Imperium.
For a moment, he felt as though a vast sea had opened before the leaping fish.
Just as Eden was happily sitting on the Golden Throne, enjoying the glory of victory and preparing to say a few words to the warriors of the Imperium, he suddenly sensed a familiar psychic presence.
"Right. I almost forgot about the Emperor.
"The Dark King, or rather the old man's dark side, has already been stripped away along with the black sun. The old man should be able to gain his freedom now."
Only then did Eden recover from the joy of victory and remember the Emperor's situation.
It was not just him. Even the Primarchs had failed to think of it for the moment. After all, the Emperor had stayed on the Throne for ten thousand years, and then came the terrible disaster of the Dark King.
Everyone had somewhat overlooked the fact that the Emperor still existed.
But no matter what, the Emperor was a Perpetual, and one even stronger than Vulkan.
If Vulkan could be resurrected after his flesh was shattered into molecules, then the Emperor naturally could as well, and much faster at that.
After escaping the restraints of faith and the Golden Throne, the Master of Mankind would inevitably return to reality.
"As expected, the Emperor has returned. After enduring for so long, the old man can finally relax."
Eden looked expectantly toward the area where the Emperor's psychic presence had appeared, and soon saw the figure in golden armor.
At that moment, the Emperor also looked over.
The two stared at each other, and the atmosphere fell silent for a time.
The Primarchs and elite warriors were the same.
They all looked at the two strongest beings of the Imperium on the Golden Throne's platform, one sitting and one standing, their expressions somewhat strange.
The scene had already become rather awkward, especially since the Savior was sitting in the seat that had originally belonged to the Emperor, looking down at him.
Any ruler would have difficulty accepting that, even the Emperor.
"This boy really does have some of the bearing of the Master of Mankind now."
The Emperor felt somewhat lonely in his heart.
But he could not really say anything. After all, he, the former Master of Mankind, had already passed the crown to the Savior.
He could not return and immediately start fighting a junior over a seat, even if that seat was his.
More importantly, if not for that boy, he would still be imprisoned in the Warp. As an elder, he ought to be magnanimous.
The Emperor comforted himself in his heart.
This former Master of Mankind was no longer the tyrant of his youth. He seemed more like a lonely man who had endured too much hardship.
Still, looking up at the Savior like this, especially in front of his sons and the Imperium's elites, made him feel somewhat uncomfortable.
The former Master of Mankind stood there awkwardly, unsure whether he should remain standing, sit down, or leave the platform.
He even felt that he should not be here at all, but back in the Warp. If he had known, he would have returned a little later.
There was no helping it. The position of Emperor Emeritus was simply that awkward.
"Ahem."
Eden saw something in the Emperor's complicated gaze and felt rather awkward himself.
No matter how one put it, this Golden Throne had been the Emperor's exclusive seat for ten thousand years.
It was still warm.
It really was a little inappropriate for him to occupy the seat and use it to show off. At least half of the position of Emperor of the Imperium had been passed down to him by the old man.
Furthermore, the Emperor had guarded humanity for ten thousand years. At the very least, he was the Emperor Emeritus. Eden could not embarrass him in public.
Especially not in front of the man's sons. That would be too improper.
"Haha, old man, you have finally returned. Humanity only lasted until now because of you…"
Eden laughed awkwardly twice and quickly climbed down from the Golden Throne, without the slightest reluctance.
In any case, he had already arranged a bigger and more luxurious Golden Throne on the new throneworld. It was the comfortable kind, with massage functions and a heated cushion.
"The Imperium cannot be without you!"
Eden quickly descended the steps toward the Emperor and supported his arm, looking every bit like a man respecting the old and caring for the young.
His attitude was flawless.
After that, Eden supported the Emperor as they walked up the steps.
Since the Emperor had returned, of course he had to sit upon the Golden Throne. They could not leave the old man standing in front of it like he was being punished.
In the Golden Throne's area, there was only one seat. Everyone else could only stand. Eden was young, strong, and healthy. Standing for a while was no problem.
"Boy, you did well. Handing the Imperium to you was the most correct decision I ever made."
The Emperor felt much better now.
Although he had already decided not to rule the Imperium again, the Savior's attitude still made him deeply gratified.
This boy Eden was good. Unlike those Primarch sons of his, each more rebellious and unfilial than the last.
If not for this boy, relying only on those unreliable sons, perhaps the Dark King would have been born completely and the Imperium of Man would have been destroyed along with Him.
"Old man, please."
Eden respectfully helped the Emperor to the Golden Throne and gestured for him to sit, showing his respect for the Emperor Emeritus.
After all, no matter what, the Emperor deserved everyone's respect.
However, when the Emperor arrived before the Golden Throne and saw that familiar machine, the Throne he had sat upon for ten thousand years, the memories of his past torment surged into his mind, and his body could not help trembling.
He was instantly triggered.
Although this former Master of Mankind had felt somewhat lonely when he saw the Savior seated upon the Throne and receiving worship, that did not mean he wanted to sit on this thing again.
For ten thousand years, he had wanted every moment to escape this abominable Throne. It had left him with severe psychological trauma.
Even though the Golden Throne could no longer operate and was now only an empty shell, the Emperor still could not quite get past it in his heart.
"This Golden Throne should be left to that boy, the Savior," the Emperor thought.
Under the shadow of that trauma, he would rather stand.
Or, perhaps, use psychic power to shape a seat out of wreckage nearby. Anything would be better than sitting on the Golden Throne again.
"Eden, you are the Emperor of the Imperium. This seat should be yours. This old man will stand."
The Emperor coughed lightly and spoke with considerable sincerity.
Now, just standing in front of the Golden Throne made him somewhat uncomfortable. There was even phantom pain in his body.
One could imagine just how great a psychological shadow this magnificent machine had cast over the former Master of Mankind.
"Hiss. The old man is testing me."
Eden completely misunderstood.
He thought the Emperor was deliberately being polite in order to test his successor's "filial devotion" toward the Emperor Emeritus.
"Old man, how can you say that? You protected humanity from the Golden Throne for ten thousand years. Your contribution to mankind is unmatched.
"You are the one who should sit in this seat!"
Eden's respect-for-the-elderly mindset erupted. With a little force, he tried to pull the Emperor onto the Throne.
"Ah, no… no need. I—this old man is no longer the Master of Mankind…"
The Emperor grew even more anxious as he looked at the Throne drawing closer, and the shadow over his heart doubled.
He tried hard to decline.
The two began pulling back and forth. It had the flavor of a ritual three refusals and three offers.
"Come on, old man, don't be so polite. This was always your seat. How could I bear to occupy it?"
Eden suddenly understood.
The old Emperor was embarrassed. So Eden used even more strength to help him up, doing his best to show "filial devotion."
If he did not let the Emperor sit upon the Golden Throne today, how improper would that be?
Those who did not know better might think he, the Savior, was cold-hearted and disrespectful to his elders.
This sovereign was absolutely not that kind of man.
"The old Emperor is still strong despite his age. He has quite a bit of strength."
As Eden thought this, he increased his strength even further while persisting, even drawing upon the Orkish power of belief.
Only then did he continue pulling and tugging the Emperor toward the Golden Throne.
The former Master of Mankind had just returned and was still very weak. He had no way to stop him.
In truth, after losing the faith of the sacred sun, the Emperor, as a Perpetual, was still much stronger than the Primarchs in physical strength and psychic power.
But he could no longer compare to the Savior.
He had already lost the power of a Warp god. That was the price of freedom.
"You brat."
Unable to stop him, the Emperor could only watch helplessly as he was escorted step by step toward the Golden Throne.
His whole mind went numb, but under so many eyes, he could not very well say anything.
He could hardly announce that the former Master of Mankind was afraid of a disabled mechanical Throne.
And so, the Emperor, who had only just obtained his freedom, was once again forcefully helped back onto the still-warm Throne—or rather, toilet—by the Savior, who respected the old and cared for the young.
Of course, from everyone else's perspective, the Savior's attitude toward the Emperor Emeritus was impeccable.
Click, click, click!
The Primaris Ogryn reporters used their pict-recording devices to record this warm scene.
This would be written into the epics to prove the orderly succession of the Imperium's supreme power, as well as filial piety, brotherly duty, loyalty, and trustworthiness, leaving the warriors of the Imperium with nothing to say.
After all, among the living Space Marines, especially the high-ranking ones, at least more than half knew of the Emperor's existence.
Even if those high-ranking Space Marines now believed in and worshipped the Savior, that did not mean they had forgotten the Emperor who had bitterly supported humanity for ten thousand years.
For any political system, succession was extremely important. One had to take power with legitimacy.
Even the Ming Empire of Eden's homeland had acknowledged the legitimacy of the previous nomadic regime after overthrowing it, then continued the line of succession.
Hiss!
After being pressed back onto the Golden Throne by the Savior, the Emperor jolted violently, his mentality nearly cracking.
That boy respected me too much!
He had finally escaped this abominable mechanical Throne, only to sit back down again.
For a moment, goosebumps rose all over the Emperor's body, and the phantom pain grew even deeper.
The former Master of Mankind was even more triggered now and wished he could immediately leap up from the Throne.
Yet facing the gazes of the Savior, the Primarchs, and the elite warriors of the Imperium, he endured it and maintained his dignified bearing.
Fortunately, the Golden Throne did not start up and did not bind him again. Only then did the Emperor feel slightly relieved.
Without changing expression, he shifted his backside slightly forward and said to the Savior, "This once, and never again."
Eden obediently nodded and stood properly before the Throne. Behind him were the Primarchs, the Imperium's elites, and other such figures.
After ten thousand years, the Emperor had returned to reality and once again sat upon the Golden Throne. This was bound to be an important address.
"I wonder what Father is truly thinking. He will not take control of the Imperium again, will he?"
Even as Guilliman, Vulkan, and the other Primarchs felt joy, they also began to worry.
The Emperor sitting upon the Golden Throne again made them somewhat anxious. The psychological shadows of the past rose once more.
Compared with the Emperor's previous tyrannical bearing, which allowed no argument and involved beating them mercilessly, they would much rather have the Savior remain the Emperor of the Imperium and work with that brother in unity and friendship to improve the Imperium.
"No. Father has changed a great deal. He should no longer be attached to that Throne. Besides, the Savior has already grasped power…"
Guilliman thought this in his heart. The Imperium now had a new throneworld, and both the administrative system and the military were in that being's hands.
Although the Primarchs were worried, they still chose to wait quietly beneath the Throne for the Emperor's speech.
They did not quite dare defy this Emperor, their father.
Clang, clang.
The Adeptus Custodes brought a blackstone cage beneath the Golden Throne. Inside it was the sealed Horus.
Since the Emperor had already returned, the fate of that traitor should be decided by him. Eden had no wish to overstep his authority.
As for those Imperial elites, they all withdrew from the area, leaving only the Primarchs and a portion of the Custodians.
This was the Emperor's family matter, as well as a taboo of the Imperium. It had to be kept as secret as possible.
Inside the blackstone cage, Horus's heart was as dead as ash.
He had failed completely.
The Savior had defeated even the Dark King, while he had fallen into the disgrace of becoming a prisoner.
What made it even harder for Horus to accept was that he had to face the Emperor, that father of his, and accept his judgment.
To him, this was no different from the greatest humiliation.
"Tyrant!"
After seeing the Emperor, Horus still struggled to rise, straightening his body with an unyielding look.
He shouted sternly, "You were arrogant and stubborn. You failed humanity, and you failed us, your sons. You are the one who made us become what we are now.
"You are not worthy to sit upon that Throne. Look at the Imperium now, then look at the humanity that existed under your rule.
"The Savior is more suited to that position than you. Even Roboute, that useless waste, is more suited than you.
"You are not worthy of being the Emperor, much less a father!"
This rebellious Primarch, who had fallen to Chaos, had already decided to confront the Emperor head-on. In order to strike that father as hard as possible, he even began praising the Savior.
Sitting upon the Golden Throne, the Emperor's face darkened.
He looked at the son he had once trusted most, now fallen to Chaos and cursing him to his face, and for once, he did not fly into a thunderous rage.
The father of the Primarchs thought of all the things that had happened in the past, thought of Horus's betrayal. It was that rebellious son who had personally sent him onto the Golden Throne.
And perhaps he, as a father, was not without responsibility for all of this. He had not taught those Primarchs well, nor had he protected humanity.
The Emperor quietly listened to Horus's furious curses. As for the other Primarchs, they dared not make a sound.
Strictly speaking, Eden was just part of the audience eating melon, and it was not appropriate for him to speak.
Horus's words struck straight into the heart. Under that sorrow, the Emperor's appearance became even more weathered. Even his back seemed unable to fully straighten.
After cursing for a while, Horus saw the Emperor's appearance and gradually fell silent. He wordlessly watched that father, the tyrant in his heart.
Only after Horus quieted down did the Emperor finally support himself and stand. His voice was so sorrowful.
"This was my mistake. I failed to notice the changes in you and allowed such ambition to grow in your heart.
"But all of this can no longer be undone…"
The Emperor stared at his son in the cage, the one who had fallen to Chaos, and tears could not help sliding down his face.
"Horus, you should know what sins you have committed."
His voice trembled, yet it contained anger and resolve.
"After everything that has happened, what else do you have to say for yourself?!"
