Chapter 40: Recruiting Clara Hartmann. (Edited)"Oh, I heard you made a killing on Bitcoin from Rebecca. That’s great, son, but just be smart with it, alright? Money goes a lot faster than you think."
"Don’t worry, Dad. This one was given to me by the city. Remember the settlement?"
Liam had called his dad, Michael, to let him know that the Range Rover was already being shipped over for him. He had also called Charles and arranged for the Mercedes meant for Emily to be sent home as well.
Now that Michael was getting almost four thousand dollars a month from rent, Liam felt like his family could finally breathe a little easier.
"Yeah, I remember. I’ve actually been looking at some places near the coast. Man, when I was working minimum wage, I used to think a million dollars meant you were rich-rich. Then you start looking at houses and realize a million bucks doesn’t go nearly as far as you think."
Michael gave a short laugh over the phone.
"I checked out this place yesterday. Nothing too crazy, just a nice house with some land. Guy wanted three million bucks for it. Three million, Liam. I almost laughed in his face. Then he tells me it comes with ten acres, and I’m sitting there thinking, ’Well, hell, I guess that explains it.’"
"Yeah, Dad. I say go for it. Find a house you actually like and don’t worry too much about the price. I’ll cover you. Use our joint account for the down payment. It has exactly a million bucks in it."
After telling his dad that, Liam asked about his mom. The moment she heard he was on the phone, she practically snatched it from Michael and started talking for nearly ten minutes straight.
Somewhere between asking if he was eating properly and reminding him to take care of himself, Liam also learned that Emily hadn’t been bullying any kids at school lately. According to his mom, she had actually been behaving herself and slowly turning into a good kid.
"That’s good, Mom. I sent a car for Emily too, but don’t give it to her yet. If she keeps behaving like this, give it to her when she turns eighteen."
For a moment, his mother went quiet, but Liam could hear her heavy sigh. Her voice softened noticeably before she continued.
"Alright, sweetheart... I’ll do that. You know, you’ve always been like this with her. Even though she’s only a year younger than you, that girl has looked up to you since she was little. She might act tough at school and give us headaches at home, but the second you say something seriously, she listens."
...
After the emotional conversation with his mother finally ended, Liam lowered the phone and sank back into the couch. For a few seconds, he just sat there quietly, letting the room settle around him after hearing his mother’s voice for so long.
Dozens of MacBooks were stacked across the coffee table in front of him, their boxes filling most of the space, but Liam barely paid them any attention. He had always been more of a desktop guy and still preferred having a proper workstation, but he decided to keep one for himself anyway. If nothing else, these things lasted a long time.
He reached for one of the black iPhone 6s Plus boxes instead and slowly peeled away the wrapping. After setting up the phone, Liam transferred all of his pictures and personal files over, watching his old phone empty itself into the new one piece by piece.
Once everything was finished, he called Daniel and gave him the details of his new phone. Not long after, Daniel, the Vice President at Chase, had Liam’s personal banking app sent over and set up again so he could access his accounts from the new device without any problems.
*KNOCK-KNOCK*
Hearing the knock on the door, Liam initially assumed it was room service. But when he opened it, Clara was standing on the other side instead.
[Clara Hartmann.img]
That surprised him slightly. Clara was usually the type to simply walk into his room without asking, so seeing her standing there after actually knocking felt strangely formal.
"Hey."
Liam smiled and moved aside, gesturing for her to come in. Clara’s face immediately turned a little red. Her fingers tightened around the hem of her T-shirt before she finally stepped past him and entered the room.
Ever since lunch, something inside her had felt different. She couldn’t properly explain it. The last few days of her life felt strangely hazy when she tried to think back on them, almost like she had spent the entire time running entirely on emotion without ever stopping to question anything.
She remembered everything clearly, yet the intensity behind some of those memories suddenly felt strange to her. Clara slowly walked over to the couch and sat down. For several seconds, she stared at her own hands while rubbing the edge of her T-shirt between her fingers.
"I... I came here to ask you something."
Liam closed the door behind her and walked toward the table. Hearing that she was here to ask something, he smiled.
"Go ahead."
"Am I... still your girlfriend?"
Liam’s hand stopped halfway toward the glass of water. For a brief moment, he simply turned around and looked at her. Clara was sitting stiffly on the couch, shoulders slightly tense, clearly nervous about whatever answer was going to come out of his mouth.
Liam poured himself a glass of water anyway, but after seeing her awkward expression, he walked over and placed the glass into her hands instead.
"Drink this first."
Liam pulled a wooden stool over and sat down directly in front of her. Clara’s face was still visibly nervous, her cheeks carrying a deep blush as she took a few small sips of water. Once she had calmed herself a little, she handed the glass back to Liam.
"Do you want to end things between us?"
"N... no."
"Then you’re my girlfriend. It’s really that simple. Let me tell you a secret, Clara. This world isn’t as normal as you might think it is."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, there are people capable of achieving extraordinary things. Take me, for example. Look at me properly and try to remember what I looked like just a few months ago in high school."
Liam smiled and leaned back slightly, letting her take a proper look at him. His six-foot-eight frame had changed almost beyond recognition. Broad shoulders stretched out above a thick chest, his waist remained narrow, and every part of his body looked densely built without appearing bulky.
His arms were large and sharply defined even while relaxed, while his chest, shoulders, and abdomen had the kind of balanced muscular development that looked closer to a superhero from movies than an eighteen-year-old who had only recently been an ordinary high-school student. The only part that remained strangely normal was his face, which was still fairly average despite the almost unreal body beneath it.
"You’ve become sexier?"
"Sexier? Sure, let’s call it that. So now you see what I mean? Matter of fact, you’re extraordinary as well."
"Me?"
"Yes, you."
Liam smiled at her confused expression. It was about time he started bringing a few people properly onto his side instead of keeping everything to himself. Clara was already deeply involved in his life, and if he wanted her beside him in whatever came next, leaving her completely ignorant about the abnormal side of the world would only make things harder.
More importantly, Clara already had two Divine Points sitting unused, and she was close enough to leveling up again and gaining another one. Liam couldn’t properly make use of those points for her while keeping her completely in the dark, so sooner or later, this conversation had to happen.
"How am I extraordinary?"
"Well, let me show you."
Show me her status.
Liam wanted a few extraordinary people like Clara standing beside him, but he wasn’t stupid enough to reveal every card in his hand. The system itself, the status panel, and anything directly connected to them would remain his secret.
He couldn’t even show the panel to other people anyway, and his other abilities were already abnormal enough to prove that the world was far stranger than Clara believed.

[Can’t use divine points yet. Host can use the + sign to edit and use it for her.]
For the first time, Liam was actually about to edit someone else’s status panel. Looking at all the numbers and little plus signs made the whole thing feel ridiculously game-like, but what he was about to do could permanently change Clara’s life.
He thought about asking what she wanted to max out first, but then decided against it. She was a girl, so he figured she would probably want Charisma maxed first.
Liam pressed the + beside Charisma first, then moved to Strength. This was the easiest way to show Clara just how extraordinary she could become. At the same time, his eyes moved back to her passive. It was honestly kind of broken, game-breaking, almost like Clara herself was the main character.
"Go check yourself in the mirror and come back."
Clara gave Liam a strange look before slowly standing up. Liam simply smiled as he watched her. Her face itself hadn’t changed much, but something about her suddenly felt different. Her features seemed a little more balanced, her expressions softer, and somehow she looked even cuter than she did a few seconds ago.
