According to the Alchemy Scriptures, a Druid was once entrusted by a Red Dragon in ancient times to reinforce its seal. This creature was referred to as the "Dragon of Devouring Madness," hence the name "Mad Dragon."
Its appearance also caused the World Tree to tremble. It was from that time that the corrupted Black Dragon Nidhogg began to gnaw at the World Tree's roots day after day. It was also then that two of the Three Great Dragon Kings—the Golden Dragon and the Silver Dragon—disappeared one after another…
This very point of suspicion led later Alchemists and even Dragon Biologists to believe the Mad Dragon's identity was not so simple. It was highly likely one of the two missing Dragon Kings. But after the Golden Dragon reappeared in the East, only one possibility remained—the Silver Dragon.
Later, following the fall of the Red Dragon that guarded the Mad Dragon and the destruction of the Lion Eye Knight Order that defended the cliff a century ago, the Mad Dragon Seal weakened. To maintain peace for the Inner Side and uphold the Law, the London Tower then took over the duty of guarding Traitor's Cliff.
Logically, since the London Tower is the strongest fighting force in all of Britain, no one should dare to covet Traitor's Cliff. Yet, it seemed the Dragon Eater Association had already hatched a plan. And judging from the conversation, they were already more than halfway to success.
Baron didn't know just how powerful the Silver Dragon King was as the Mad Dragon. However, considering a Pure-blood Ancient Dragon was equivalent to the Golden Tier, its strength, even while suffering from the corruption of Madness, had to be at least at the Gold level.
If the Dragon Eater Association actually managed to release it… 'Even though I can be selfish,' Baron thought, 'it's surprising that my first thought isn't about the disaster a rampaging Mad Dragon would bring to the people of the Inner Side.' Instead, his mind went to the fact that his identity as a Dragon Knight had just been exposed to the public. 'Don't tell me I'm going to end up as the scapegoat for releasing the Mad Dragon.'
Baron silently suppressed these distracting thoughts. He hadn't forgotten his ultimate goal for coming here. So, while he was ostensibly discussing the plan with the High Priest, he was privately and indirectly probing for any information about Lankao and the Dragon Eater Association's purpose here.
The information wasn't exhaustive, but he got the gist of it: tomorrow, the Dragon Eater Association was indeed sending the Dragon Attendants here to attack an auction at Traitor's Cliff.
The Mad Dragon beneath Traitor's Cliff was indeed their target. The "President"—the role he was playing—was apparently responsible for weakening the Mad Dragon Seal, while the London Tower Wizards guarding the beast would be distracted by a Dragon Tide suddenly appearing around the cliffs.
It was here that Baron finally understood. The Wax Dragon, Bad, that had appeared in the Dracul Mountain Range had indeed been lured by them. It also meant that the premature Dragon Calamity that had erupted at the Beowulf Family's estate was, naturally, the Dragon Eater Association's doing.
Their motive for appearing in the Dracul Mountain Range was not only to use the Trial Takers and Dragon Descendants to create Dragon Attendants but also to extract the aura of the Ancient Dragon—and perhaps even a Dragon King—from the Dragon Spear.
Baron didn't press for more details, however. Pushing too hard would only arouse suspicion. So, after a few more brief exchanges, he shifted the conversation to Freya.
He wouldn't have known if he hadn't asked, but the answer was shocking. When Baron heard the High Priest's plans for Freya and Lankao, he was not only stunned that a purely evil organization like the Dragon Eater Association still existed, but also found himself silently seething at the High Priest's proposal:
"The Legitimate Daughter of the Lancelot's Family is certainly difficult to handle. But that fellow, Baron Constantin, is in the Inner Side and recently caused a huge disturbance in the Dracul Mountain Range. As long as we leave behind a few items connected to him, it wouldn't be impossible for the Hestia Family to pin a few more crimes on him."
"Because of Freya's broken engagement, everyone in the Inner Side knows Baron Constantin hates the Lancelot's Family to the bone. Since everyone already believes he killed Anthony, they won't find it hard to believe he'd kill Freya, too."
The High Priest said, "Although we don't know who's manipulating public opinion in his favor, once the Court of Pulor passes its sentence, the Lawbreaker's fate will be sealed."
"But, President…" The High Priest paused. "I still don't understand why you chose Baron Constantin as the scapegoat in the first place."
Just as Baron's pupils widened in shock, someone came forward to report, "An intruder has reached the altar."
The High Priest and Baron exchanged a look, one thinking, 'With security this tight, who could possibly get in?' and the other, 'Besides me, who else could possibly get in?'
Seeing the High Priest remain silent, Baron understood that he was in charge here. He gave the order and followed the messenger to where the intruder had been caught.
They found him by a Blood Pool. He was blond, wearing a diving suit, and still trying to talk his way out of it. "Hey brothers, how about we just call it even? I'll pretend I never saw anything, and you can pretend I was never here…"
...
The corner of Baron's mouth twitched. 'Of course,' he thought. 'Who else could it be but Jack.'
"Praise the Dragon God…" The Attendants, having received Baron's instructions, retreated and led Jack away.
Baron spoke with the High Priest a little longer. When he saw Freya being led away by a member of the Blood Department, he knew he had to act fast. He signaled to the High Priest that he was now off to handle important business, implying that a leader's "inspection" could also mean everyone getting back to their respective tasks.
"Praise the Dragon God," Baron said, mimicking the others.
The High Priest's gaze wavered for a moment. "Yes… Praise the Dragon God, my Lord President."
Once the High Priest was gone, Baron's first instinct was to find Freya, who had been taken by the Blood Department. In the end, however, he first went to where Jack was being held. Using his authority as the "President," he dismissed the Cultists on guard and cut Jack down from where he was suspended over a Blood Pool. It seemed the Dragon Devourer Cultists had planned to use Jack as a catalyst to initiate some ritual.
