Jack rattled off his words like a machine gun:
"Brother L, you're finally here! Holy shit, it's been one day and you're already the leader? Damn… you look familiar like this, but I just can't place it…
Right, the Dragon Eater Association is planning to attack the auction at Traitor's Cliff tomorrow. Their targets seem to be the Old Blood Nobility and high-ranking Law Enforcers at the auction…
Mad Dragon is also one of their targets. They plan to use the chaos at the auction to draw out the Lion Eye Knight Order stationed around Traitor's Cliff…"
Baron said, "I already know all this. Report what's happening here to the Demon Hunter Association in Berthelili. Have them wipe out the entire group. I have to go back and find Freya."
"Brother L, I don't think you'll be able to turn back," Jack said instead.
Baron turned and saw they were already surrounded outside the door. At their head was none other than the High Priest.
'Looks like I've been exposed. When did that happen?'
Baron forced himself to remain calm. His hand had already reached for the Illusory Cocoon, but then he remembered he still had to find Freya, and the Illusory Cocoon had a cooldown time. By then, it would be too late. So his hand went to his Spear Sword.
"Lord Leader, have you forgotten?" The High Priest let out a decrepit laugh. "It is not the Dragon God we are to praise, but the Immortal."
'Immortal… The Dragon Eater Association doesn't worship the Dragon God, but the Immortal? Meaning, the Immortal Goddess?'
Baron finally understood why the member from the Blood Department he'd killed had muttered "Immortal" as he died. The flames wielded by the Dragon Devourer Cultists were even called the Immortal Fire. 'So after all this, is this all the blessing of that bitch, the Immortal Goddess?'
"Let me guess… The stalker who showed up here right after Freya… You're Constantine, aren't you?"
The High Priest ordered the Cultists beside him, "Capture him. The soul of a Dragon Knight will be the perfect incubator for birthing the Great Dragon."
His words cut off abruptly. His eyes went wide as he and the crowd of Dragon Devourer Cultists behind him stared in astonishment at the scene unfolding before them.
With a sudden BANG, smoke billowed up. The blood in the Blood Pool erupted uncontrollably into the air, forming a churning wall of blood that obscured everyone's line of sight.
When the High Priest and his men broke through the wall of blood, they found the specially reinforced alchemy brick wall behind the Dragon Knight had been blasted open. The two of them were nowhere to be seen.
The High Priest ordered again, "After them! The entire Monastery is filled with our people, and there are Alchemy Arrays. They can't escape."
As the Cultists poured out in pursuit, his eyes glinted. "The rest of you, with me."
Fla didn't know where the Elder from the Hestia Family had taken her, but her heart still held a sense of eager anticipation and a small flutter of joy.
'At last, at long last, everything will be over… Once I find Mr. Lankao, all these nightmares—everything—will finally end.'
'She was sick of having to impersonate others, sick of hurting people.'
'Let all my sins be buried here and now.'
She took a deep breath. "My lord of the Blood Department, where is Mr. Lankao? I've completed every task you assigned me. Now… please, honor your promise and bring Mr. Lankao to me…"
"Patience, young lady of Lancelot's Family. Just a bit longer. Our Mr. Lankao needs some time to prepare as well."
The man from the Blood Department clapped his hands, and several more Dragon Eater Association Cultists emerged from the shadows. Judging by the patterns on their robes, these were the Cultists responsible for Alchemy Ceremonies.
Fla realized something was amiss. She glanced around and said:
"My lord of the Blood Department, what is the meaning of this? Have you forgotten our agreement? Don't forget, you are an Elder of the Hestia Family, and Freya is the fiancée they have chosen."
The man from the Blood Department replied coolly, "Ordinarily, that would be true. But with Young Master Roy gravely injured, Jill can no longer remain uninvolved."
Upon hearing this, Fla understood. She drew her Magic Staff—if Baron were here, he would have recognized it as the Fire Element Staff from the collection room.
As she channeled her Spiritual Power into it, a crimson glow swirled at the top of the Magic Crystal, erupting into flames that burned in mid-air. The flames encircled her like burning leaves swept up in a gale, forming a crimson cyclone.
[Black Iron Magic: Fire Wind]
"What have you done to Mr. Lankao…?" Fla demanded.
But the man from the Blood Department only sneered. "Too late. Why do you think I brought you here? This chamber is warded with Forbidden Magic."
He snapped his fingers. Instantly, the surrounding walls lit up with all kinds of strange runes. The glowing lines connected, revealing one Alchemy Array after another and illuminating everything in the darkness.
Under the suppressive power of the Alchemy Arrays, the Fire Wind swirling around Fla immediately dissipated.
The man from the Blood Department snapped his fingers again. Flames erupted in the hands of the Priests who had emerged from the darkness, linking together to form a massive wall of fire. The terrifying heat made the air CRACKLE. In the flickering light, the sleeping Dragon Attendants in the surrounding Blood Pool looked savage and defiant. The gleam moving across their scales reminded Fla of the Lion's Eye Helmet Anthony always wore.
The dark red firewalls rushed toward Fla, carrying a turbulent current of air. It was easy to imagine what would happen if they hit.
'This is the end.'
The thought flashed through Fla's mind. The Magic Staff she had been clutching tightly slipped from her grasp. She closed her eyes in resignation, a faint, unreadable smile—born of either irony or ridicule—playing on her lips.
"The next part's a little bloody. You might want to close your eyes." At the very instant the Immortal Fire rushed toward her face, she heard someone speak.
She sensed a dark shadow flicker before her eyes. Then, the oncoming Immortal Fire melted away like snow in the sun.
The Alchemy Arrays abruptly went dark, as if the newcomer had severed the very light itself. Then, a new flame ignited before Fla, its brilliance and heat ten times that of the Immortal Fire.
As the light flared, Fla heard a series of piercing screams. She saw that the Priests had all been incinerated, turned to black charcoal by the flames. Standing amidst the blackened figures was another shape of black.
His burning hand was clamped tightly around the neck of the man from the Blood Department. The man struggled in his grasp, his face turning purple, his eyes bulging and bloodshot. He couldn't utter a single word in the man's iron-like grip.
He was like a dying gazelle, its throat caught in a lion's maw. The bones in his neck made the cracking sound of being chewed by a predator.
As the firelight faintly illuminated the man's face, Fla's heart skipped a beat. A wave of dizziness washed over her, and she nearly fainted. She scrambled to pick up her Magic Staff from the floor, clutching it tightly, yet she lacked the courage to meet the man's gaze.
She didn't even have the courage to thank him. She felt like an elementary school student who had just run into their most feared teacher after school.
'How is he here...? And he's wearing the robes of the Dragon Eater Association…' Fla was lost in a daze for a moment before the man spoke again:
"Don't be surprised, Miss Freya. I came to save you, but I also came to save myself."
The young man said, "Let's not waste words. We can talk after I've dealt with everything here."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he casually tossed aside the burning body of the man from the Blood Department, his neck snapped. He stepped out from the dimly lit shadows and onto the platform.
Even though she had steeled herself, Fla was still taken aback.
The man was, in fact—the Dragon Knight, Baron Constantin!
Constantine, however, didn't look at her, showing no intention of reminiscing. He simply said, for no apparent reason, "There's not much time. We're surrounded."
Before Fla could even process what he meant,
With a sharp TWANG—some kind of whistle that was clearly a signal—the sleeping Dragon Attendants in the surrounding Blood Pools began to stir.
At the same time, a scraping sound echoed from the rooftop. The noise was heavy yet sharp, a chaotic cacophony that sounded as if thousands of blades were being dragged across the roof, threatening to tear it apart.
Without a moment's hesitation, Dragon Knight Constantin put a round in the head of the still-struggling man from the Blood Department. He grabbed Freya's hand, hurled a special-issue Alchemy Bomb from the quartermaster's division to blow apart the wall behind them, and dragged her into a desperate sprint toward an empty corridor.
