When Love Turns the Tables: The Mysterious Husband's Chase
Chapter 1158: Her Xi SiyanZhou Chengchen nodded, still recalling the few times she ate with Xi Siyan, and ordered a few dishes.
Although she and An Rui weren’t exactly close, Zhou Chengchen had always been naturally outgoing and never afraid of awkward silences.
She was just about to say something when An Rui spoke first from across the table: "Cheng Chen, can I call you that? You’re the Zhou Family’s eldest daughter?"
An Rui really didn’t care much what kind of status Zhou Chengchen had. If she were some gaming god, he might care a bit, but being the Zhou Family’s eldest daughter, that identity didn’t matter to him. He was just bored with nothing to do and wanted to confirm it.
Zhou Chengchen didn’t expect him to suddenly come out with that. The reason she didn’t like people knowing her identity was because she didn’t like those fake, pretentious compliments, but since she’d been found out, she wouldn’t go out of her way to hide it.
"Yeah, I am. How did you know?"
"My dad recognized you and Zhou Qi, so I just asked casually."
"Oh."
Zhou Chengchen lowered her head and took a sip of water. A thought flashed through her mind, and she said, "Um, since you’re close with Xi Siyan, do you know what his situation is? Why does he live alone? Where are his parents?"
"Clang—" Before Zhou Chengchen even finished her sentence, the little spoon An Rui had been fiddling with slipped from his hand and hit the plate with a crisp sound.
Then An Rui stared at her in shock: "How do you know he lives alone?"
"I’ve been to his place."
"...!!!"
The struck-by-lightning look on An Rui’s face left Zhou Chengchen completely baffled, but very soon, An Rui cleared up her confusion.
"You’ve actually been to his home? He usually doesn’t let people into his life."
"Why?"
They all knew each other, so going to each other’s homes should’ve been a pretty normal thing, right? But from An Rui’s expression, Zhou Chengchen picked up on something else.
An Rui sighed, glanced again in the direction Xi Siyan had left, and finally said, "Si Yan’s background is... how should I put it, complicated. His dad and his mom had him before they got married, back when they were still college students, and his dad..."
As he spoke, An Rui glanced around and lowered his voice: "You know the Xi Family, right?"
Xi Family?
Zhou Chengchen didn’t know, but she didn’t ask. From the way An Rui said it, it was obvious the Xi Family had some kind of status.
"Go on."
"His dad is from the Xi Family, and his mom is just an ordinary person. Later his dad was taken back by his family. The Xi Family was never going to accept his mom, and they didn’t accept him either, so Si Yan basically grew up without a father. Later his mom remarried."
As he said this, something suddenly occurred to An Rui: "Oh right, I think his stepfather works for your family, doesn’t he? Zhou Real Estate?"
"And then?"
"There is no ’and then.’ It’s just, in that house, of course Si Yan wasn’t welcome. After all, he was the child his wife brought in, not the man’s own. They used to live together, but at some point he moved out. I don’t know the exact reason, but I don’t really need to—anyone can guess he must’ve been kicked out."
By now, Zhou Chengchen’s brows were almost knotted into a bun. An Rui said it lightly, but she felt like she’d suddenly seen through a lot of things. She didn’t know exactly what kind of people the Xi Family were, but clearly, the Xi Family’s rejection of Xi Siyan and his mother was definitely not something simple.
And that so‑called stepfather of his—even if he wasn’t welcome in that house, his mom was still there, wasn’t she? For him to still end up being thrown out like that, it was obvious Xi Siyan had suffered no small amount of grievances.
