Seeing it scratch its head in frustration, Tan You couldn’t help but smile slightly. "Alright, if there’s nothing else, you can go. I need to find a place to establish my own cave abode, so let’s part ways here."

"Wait, Huanhuan..." The little mouse scurried after her. As a Wind Element demonic beast, it simply floated unsteadily by Tan You’s side.

Tan You shot it a glare. "If you call me Huanhuan one more time, I’m going to flip."

"Then what should I call you? You’re a Silver Ring Snake now. Once you cultivate to the Ninth Rank, you’ll evolve into a Golden Ring Snake. If I don’t call you Huanhuan, what am I supposed to call you?"

The little mouse said matter-of-factly, "The rings on your body are so pretty. They’re all sparkly."

Tan You paused. "How do you know about Golden Ring Snakes? Even with the bloodline of a treasure-hunting mouse, you shouldn’t know about these things yet. You’re only a Third Rank beast."

The little mouse puffed out its chest. "Mouse is different! Mouse has undergone ancestral reversion! Look at Mouse’s paws, aren’t they just gorgeous?"

Tan You understood. No wonder this little creature had sought her out. For demonic beasts that had undergone ancestral reversion, survival and advancement were much more difficult. Take, for instance, a Purple Ring Snake with Golden Ring Snake bloodline, like this body’s original owner—its Heavenly Tribulation would be fifty percent stronger than that of an ordinary demonic beast.

But for a beast with reverted ancestry, the intensity of its Heavenly Tribulation essentially doubled.

Tan You glanced at the little mouse’s glittering golden paws. "They are pretty. And from the looks of it, you’re almost at the peak of the Third Rank. Your Heavenly Tribulation could arrive at any moment."

The little mouse’s head drooped in dejection. "Yeah... If Mouse faces the Heavenly Tribulation alone, it’s a guaranteed death sentence. But Mouse can’t find any other demonic beast as nice as you... Mouse doesn’t want to die..."

Seeing a tiny mouse crying and sniffling in front of her... well, it was a good thing it was so cute. If it looked anything like the Violent Tooth Rats she had seen on the Western Fantasy Continent, Tan You would have shooed it away long ago.

A vein throbbed in Tan You’s temple. She knew this little creature was good at reading the room and had decided to latch onto her for good. She considered for a moment. "A symbiotic contract won’t be necessary. As it happens, I need a Heavenly Tribulation for my Body Refining. The lightning from a tribulation has a much more potent effect than ordinary Heavenly Thunder."

The words had barely left her lips when a sudden, muffled thunderclap struck a large boulder beside her, shattering it to smithereens. Tan You could almost sense the Heavenly Thunder’s exasperation.

"I’m just stating a fact. Can’t I even say it?" Tan You’s lips curved into a slight smile, paying the thunderclap no mind. "Still, I should thank you. If I hadn’t been using Heavenly Thunder to temper my body all along, I most likely wouldn’t have made it through my Nascent Soul Heavenly Tribulation."

It was a classic case of offering a carrot after wielding the stick. Sure enough, the dark clouds in the sky gradually dispersed, and bright sunlight soon bathed the area once more.

The little mouse stared dumbfounded at the scene, not even daring to breathe. After the dark clouds scattered, it leaped onto Tan You’s shoulder and began nuzzling her cheek with its tiny snout.

"Huanhuan, Mouse will be very obedient, please keep Mouse! Mouse will help you find all sorts of heavenly treasures..."

Tan You pressed a finger against the little mouse’s snout. "Don’t make empty promises. Companionship doesn’t start with being all chummy from the get-go. We’ll have to spend some time together first. I need to see what your character is like."

’Of course, she’d never admit she was only considering keeping a little creature around to amuse herself because she was a bit lonely. If she did, wouldn’t this little mouse get an ego the size of the sky?’

The little mouse, however, acted as if Tan You had already agreed. It promptly sat down on her shoulder, its long, thin tail sweeping back and forth as it radiated an air of smug satisfaction, clearly pleased to have found a patron.

Its joy was so full and vibrant that it was undoubtedly contagious, and a faint smile touched Tan You’s lips. In her life as Adina, she had spent sixteen years in the Mist Forest.

And here in the Ten-Direction Great Mountain, she had stayed for a full ninety-seven years. Even a prison sentence wasn’t that long. In such oppressive solitude, you either go bad or go crazy. Tan You didn’t want to go crazy, so she had no choice but to find some amusement for herself.

After traveling together for a few days, Tan You finally settled on the outskirts of the Ten-Direction Great Mountain. She personally preferred quiet, yet she liked being near the hustle and bustle.

Those who live in solitude are either beasts or gods. Tan You wasn’t a god, but she didn’t want to be a beast, either. The outskirts were a better fit for her.

The little mouse went wherever Tan You went. After Tan You finished setting up her cave abode, the little mouse faced its Third-Rank Heavenly Tribulation. Because Tan You helped it through the ordeal, the tribulation was a breeze.

For Tan You, it was also effortless. A Third-Rank Heavenly Tribulation was equivalent to the one a Human Clan Cultivator would face during Foundation Establishment. And since Tan You was now just one step away from Divinity Transformation, a Foundation Establishment Stage tribulation was a mere drizzle.

Having advanced to the Fourth Rank, the little mouse hadn’t changed much in size, but a golden line had appeared on its forehead. As its cultivation deepened, this golden line would gradually spread until its entire coat of fur turned gold.

When Tan You awoke from her meditative trance, she saw the little mouse lying in front of a mirror, its head resting on its front paws. It was staring intently at the golden line on its forehead, its face a mask of smug satisfaction.

Tan You glanced at it. "You’ve been staring at that for three days. How much longer are you going to look?"

"I’ll never get tired of looking!" the little mouse chirped gleefully. "Huanhuan, you’re the best!"

Tan You said helplessly, "Don’t call me Huanhuan."

Even though her current form was a type of ringed snake, and she even had six rings around her neck, Tan You could never accept the name Huanhuan. It was just too... undignified.

Unfortunately, the little mouse paid her no mind, chirping "Huanhuan" over and over with infuriating cheerfulness.

Tan You ignored it, letting the vain little mouse continue admiring itself in the mirror. She walked out of her cave abode and fell into thought as she gazed at the beautiful landscape before her.

Demonic beasts usually lived in simple caves; only Human Clan Cultivators would go to the trouble of properly constructing a cave abode. Although Tan You was in the body of a snake, ’she was human on the inside’. If she could live in a proper house, she certainly didn’t want to live in a hole in the ground.

Furthermore, she was still recovering from the injuries she’d sustained during her Heavenly Tribulation and didn’t dare to cultivate, fearing that she would immediately break through to the Divinity Transformation Stage. So, while she recuperated, Tan You needed to find something else to do. ’For example... build myself a private paradise?’

She was the type of person who acted on her ideas. Now that she was in the Cultivation World, she naturally didn’t need to hire craftsmen like a mortal to build her abode. Tan You did everything herself. She was in no rush, thoroughly enjoying the process of slowly building her own home.

First, it had to be sturdy. Second, it had to be beautiful. And finally, she needed to lay down plenty of protective Arrays around the perimeter. The vain little mouse, having finally had its fill of the mirror, began to offer Tan You its largely useless assistance.

「Far away, in the Ninth Heaven.」

A man in dark robes watched the busy female Cultivator and the little mouse in a water mirror, a slight arch to his brow. "You really let your clan’s junior get away with such a great bargain. You treasure-hunting mice truly are experts at latching onto powerful patrons."

The golden-eyed man opposite him chuckled. "When you lack strength, don’t you have to choose a good patron? The little one has a good eye. It immediately latched onto the one with the most potential."
