When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds
Chapter 648: Great Demon 11Tan You looked up at the sky, where a few stars twinkled on the horizon. She suddenly raised an eyebrow. "Fate... Even fate you create yourself is still fate."
Many people say to let nature take its course, but to Tan You, passively waiting made that philosophy seem far too pessimistic. She preferred to put in the effort first and *then* let nature take its course. That way, everything would simply fall into place.
’Who’s to say a forced fate isn’t still fate? They say a melon plucked by force isn’t sweet, but I want the melon, not its sweetness.’
The brief exchange was over in an instant, but Tan You was in no hurry. ’Rushing leads to mistakes. It’s better to go slow and make sure I don’t miss anything.’
Even as she searched for Bai Ze, Tan You left markers along her path, cataloging all the contracted demons she encountered. That way, once she found a powerful demon to anchor her formation, she could seek out these other demons with specific goals in mind.
The seasons turned and several years passed. Tan You and the little mouse had traversed nearly every inch of the Ten Directions Great Mountains, yet there was still no sign of Bai Ze’s whereabouts.
The little mouse flopped dejectedly on Tan You’s shoulder. "Huanhuan, do you think there’s something wrong with my memory? We’ve been searching for six years, and we still haven’t found any trace of Bai Ze."
Tan You held a Spirit Fruit in her hand. "Inherited memories are usually reliable. I’m more inclined to believe something happened to Bai Ze."
The little mouse shot upright. "Seriously? That can’t be... It’s the strongest in the Ten Directions Great Mountains... If something happened to it, wouldn’t the demons in its territory know?"
Tan You took a bite of the Spirit Fruit. "It’s just a guess."
She set the Spirit Fruit, which she had taken a couple of bites from, aside. The little mouse didn’t mind, hugging the fruit and nibbling on it with a CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH. It quickly polished off most of the fruit.
Tan You paid her no mind. ’If she were a male, I would have chased him off long ago.’
Gazing up at the scattered stars, Tan You seemed to have a premonition. She channeled Spiritual Power into her right hand. Soon, mystical streams of Spiritual Power materialized in the air, weaving themselves into a profound Array.
The Array hovered before them, then quickly transformed into a streak of light and plunged into the mountain depths.
Forgetting all about resting, Tan You snatched up the little mouse and shot off after the Array. The little mouse, choking on the wind, coughed twice before managing to tilt her head and look at Tan You. "Huanhuan, what is this?"
Tan You said calmly, "I’m using the power of the stars as a guide, combined with a sincere prayer. The heavens will naturally provide a sign. But whether it will actually lead us to our target... there’s no guarantee."
The little mouse was completely bewildered, but she understood one thing: her companion had just created something incredible.
Following the Array’s guidance, Tan You no longer held back, channeling her Mana to keep pace. Her conspicuous movements inevitably drew the attention of other demons, and soon, several of them were tailing her.
Seeing the Array in front of Tan You and her breakneck speed, the other demons assumed she was chasing some priceless natural treasure, even if they didn’t understand the Array itself. Acting on the principle of "first come, first served," they cast all other concerns aside, determined to find out where this Array would lead them.
’What kind of incredible treasure would be waiting at the end?’
The little mouse grew worried. "What if this is all for nothing? If we don’t find anything, will these seniors make trouble for us? The ones chasing the Array right now are a Cang Long, a Nine-tailed Fox, a Golden-Winged Great Peng Bird, and..."
Tan You shrugged. "They won’t. I have a Teleportation Scroll. If there’s any danger, we just have to tear it, and we’ll instantly teleport back to our cave."
Thinking of this, Tan You couldn’t help but smile. The Golden Ring Snake clan focused on physical cultivation, largely disdaining pursuits like Spells, Arrays, and the Alchemy Dao. As a result, Tan You’s knowledge of the Cultivation World was merely superficial; she was by no means an expert.
’I don’t know how to make the Cultivation World’s teleportation arrays, but I know all about Teleportation Scrolls from the Western Fantasy Continent. Don’t they do the same thing?’ That was why, if there was one thing Tan You had in abundance, it was these life-saving scrolls.
’If you can’t beat them, you can at least outrun them, right?’
The little mouse was instantly relieved. "I knew it! I picked the best person to stick with!"
The little mouse’s blatant flattery put Tan You in an excellent mood. She smiled. "The Array is slowing down. We need to hurry."
She sped up, and the demons following her immediately matched her pace. Above, the Golden-Winged Great Peng Bird let out a cry, its hawk-like eyes fixed on the Array like searchlights, already plotting to get the jump on everyone once they reached their destination.
Tan You paid no mind to these senior demons. She was an eighth-rank demon, the little mouse a fourth-rank; they were like two little rabbits who had wandered into a den of wolves. It was dangerous, but she wasn’t without the means to protect herself.
’If these demons dare to attack me, my God Trapping Array isn’t just for show. I’ll wear them down to their deaths if I have to. Of course, that’s the worst-case scenario. After all, I’m a demon now, too.’
’Demons don’t just start slaughtering each other without reason; there’s always room to negotiate. As for *how* to negotiate, I’ll figure that out later.’
The sky was beginning to lighten when the Array finally plunged into a mountain valley. The Golden-Winged Great Peng Bird at the top shrieked and dove headfirst into the gorge. Not to be outdone, the remaining demons scrambled past Tan You and rushed into the valley all at once.
Tan You was speechless. ’Charging in without checking for anything? Are they all just a bunch of reckless fools?’
Tan You had been traveling in her true form, but now that she had arrived, she shifted back to her human form, which she preferred for walking. Only then did she step into the valley.
But the moment she entered the valley, Tan You froze.
"What’s going on?"
The little mouse was baffled too. She shook her head. "I don’t know. How did this happen so suddenly?"
There was a massive Array in the valley, and the demons who had been so aggressively tailing Tan You were now all collapsed limply within it. When they saw Tan You enter, every single one of them glared at her with pure hatred.
She couldn’t hear a word of whatever they were saying. Shrugging, Tan You didn’t dare touch the strange Array. Instead, she circled it twice.
The demons inside the Array all stared daggers at Tan You. ’If we hadn’t chased her here,’ they all thought, ’we wouldn’t be trapped in this damned turtle shell!’ The moment they entered the Array, their cultivation had become useless, leaving them as weak as newborns.
The demons’ glares didn’t bother Tan You in the slightest. ’It’s not like I asked them to follow me,’ she thought. ’They were greedy for treasure and walked right into a trap. How is that my fault?’
’So unreasonable!’
After circling the Array twice, Tan You had already grasped the fundamentals of its construction. It was her first time encountering one of this world’s Arrays, and she found it utterly novel.
She paid no mind to rescuing the senior demons. Instead, she sat down cross-legged on the spot and began to study the Array. It was weaker than her God Trapping Array, but it had its own unique strengths, and Tan You could already tell she was learning a lot from it.
