"He’ll be fine after some rest." The healer said after his scans. "Although uncommon, it’s not entirely new. There have been cases where people experienced agony during their awakening."
"Thank you, Dr Oliver." Jon nodded as he escorted the healer to the door. "I’ll be sure to call you again if anything comes up."
"I was only doing my job, Mr Highstein." The healer replied and bade farewell before leaving through the door.
Closing the door behind the healer, Jon turned around and returned upstairs. He leaned against the door frame, silently watching his wife.
Jenny sat beside Adam’s sleeping figure, gently caressing his forehead.
"Jon, I don’t think what Adam went through was normal," Jenny muttered without looking at her husband.
"I know," Jon agreed. "But for now, Adam needs his rest. We’ll ask him once he wakes up."
"I’ll stay here with him." Jenny shook her head, unwilling to leave her son alone. "You can still leave for work if you must."
"I’m staying as well. The agency can do without me for just a day. Besides, today is Adam’s birthday." Jon moved to take a seat opposite Adam’s bed, his thoughts racing with possible complications.
The family stayed together in silence as time slowly passed. Jenny eventually lay beside her son, falling into a light sleep. Her worry had left her weary. Nothing else mattered except for her son’s well-being.
Within Adam’s body, the remnants of his awakening continued, his body adjusting to the increase in power and restructuring. Four hours passed before Adam slowly opened his eyes.
[Note to Host: It is advised to keep the system’s package to self]
The first thing he saw was the system prompt. Still disoriented, Adam didn’t think much of it. He glanced to his right and saw his mother by his side, sleeping with one of her hands over his chest.
"Mo-"
"Adam."
Before he could call his mother, he heard his father’s voice. He lowered his gaze to see his father sitting in his desk chair, calmly staring at him.
"How are you feeling?"
Adam thought for a moment before replying, "Like I’ve been run over by a truck?"
Jon flashed a small smile at hearing Adam’s response. But his eyes quickly narrowed as he looked at his son critically. "What happened?"
The question lingered in the silence that followed. Adam did not immediately reply. His eyes drifted to the text still in his view.
He didn’t immediately understand why. But as he looked at the text, his thoughts spun, thinking of the implications behind the text.
’I’ve never heard of a system like this one before. There is the strange name, then the unique skill and physique. What the hell is happening with my system?’ Adam thought, though the answers were simply waiting for his attention. ’And for it to give such a note...’
He might be a kid, but he understood a few things. A unique system like this would raise questions he might or might not have answers to. It was best to keep it to himself, at least until he understood the system better.
"My awakening was a lot more painful than I had expected," Adam began, his voice low. "I think it has something to do with the system."
Despite the flashing text before his eyes, Adam chose to disclose a few things to his father. If he could not trust his parents, then who could he trust?
"Did you awaken a physical affinity?" Jon asked, more knowledgeable than his son was. "Affinities aren’t always elemental or conceptual constructs."
"I think it’s more than that," Adam said. "I’ve awakened an affinity called Genesis."
"Genesis?" Jon echoed, clearly confused. "What does it say?"
"Well, I haven’t gotten to it yet. But that is not all." Adam added calmly, gently holding onto his mother’s hand on his chest. "I also have a unique skill and a physique."
"A physique?" Jon’s eyes slowly widened, realization dawning on him.
’So that’s where the agony came from.’ Jon thought anxiously. ’This is big. Really big. But a unique skill in addition to his affinity? People would want to know why and how he got it. Even so, the physique alone would cause an uproar.’
Already foreseeing what his son’s awakening could cause, Jon’s focus returned to his son, his eyes narrowing. He momentarily glanced at his sleeping wife and then back to his son. "Keep what you just mentioned to yourself. You are not to mention anything about what you just said to anyone else. When asked, say you awakened a physical affinity."
Adam nodded, not needing to be told twice. From the way his father reacted, what he had was big. And the fact that his father had not asked about the descriptions was telling enough.
But how would he explain his affinity then?
Almost as though his father could read his thoughts, he added, "It’s not too unusual to find people with dual affinities. It’s rare, but not strange."
"Mm."
As his thoughts settled, he looked at his mother and slowly sat up, his actions stirring his mother awake.
"Ah, you’re finally awake." Jenny quickly sat up as well, her hands moving faster than her thoughts as she did a full check on her son. "How are you feeling? Are you still in pain?"
"I’m fine, Mom." Adam smiled as he grabbed his mother’s worried hands. "I simply awakened a physical affinity."
"Are you sure?"
"I am."
"Your son is fine, Jenny." Jon chipped in, rising to his feet and beckoning for his wife to stand. "And he just awakened. I’m sure he’s itching to take a look at his affinity and what he can do. He’ll come to us once he’s ready."
Jenny nodded and got to her feet, while Adam swung his feet to the floor, sitting on the edge of his bed. He felt lighter than usual, which was not surprising. He watched as his parents left his room.
Father and son exchanged looks before the door closed, leaving Adam to himself.
’Status.’
Finally left alone, Adam’s attention moved back to the system. The note had already disappeared from the panel. And most of his excitement had dulled down since he passed out from his awakening.
