’Runes?’
Adam had heard of this esoteric term before, but he had never paid much attention to it. That was because runes were not something the average person cared about, as only a very small number of people possessed such affinities.
The little bit he knew about runes came from the sub-index called summoning. And that, too, was a new revelation, as he had not realised it fell under the Rune Index. But looking at the various sub-indexes, Adam could not help but gulp.
’If this is just one of the hidden indexes, I wonder what the others are about,’ he wondered curiously. A wave of excitement rushed through his body like lightning, igniting his desire to discover more.
Slap!
A sudden slap to the back of his head snapped him out of his excited state. "What’s wrong with this dude? Is he getting an orgasm or something?"
Adam slightly turned his head to the left, silently glaring at the guy who had slapped him. He ground his teeth but remained silent.
"What’s wrong?" Greg’s voice came from the front.
"Don’t know. He just shuddered like some fucking pervert."
"Hahaha!"
The four guys continued to mock and laugh at his expense. Swallowing his rising anger, Adam lowered his head and focused on his newly awakened Knowledge Index. There was no time to waste if he wished to break free from the suppressing cuffs.
’So this thing uses enchantment and seals...’ Adam thought as his perception fell on the enchantment and seal indexes. They were the only ones that had swiftly risen when the index awakened.
Through his unique skill and specially granted pair of eyes that gave him a sort of X-ray vision, Adam observed the swirling ring of golden symbols and shapes. In the hinge area was what looked like a tiny core.
From this core came the flowing symbols and shapes. These symbols and shapes flowed from the right cuff into his arm, climbing toward his chest into a spot located at the centre of his chest.
It underwent some kind of cycle, moving through his Spark channels to the rest of his body before flowing to his left shoulder and back into the cuff, creating a cycle of some sort.
Adam marvelled at the wonders he was staring at. And the more he looked and analysed, the deeper his understanding grew. The core of the circulation of Spark in the body seemed to be generated from somewhere in the centre of his chest, and the suppression cuffs took advantage of this.
’So that’s the centre of Spark in the body.’
Adam heard another ding in his head as his understanding of energies deepened alongside the runes. Ignoring the notifications, he continued deepening his understanding.
"Looks like he’s accepted his situation."
"It’s not like he has a way out. He might as well conserve what little strength he has."
The guys continued to converse and mock him occasionally. But Adam completely ignored them, his focus entirely on the runes he was unravelling.
He had already reached a rough understanding of how the suppression was achieved. It not only used runes, but combined the body’s natural biological workings. It seemed to clog his circulation pathways, generating a sort of reverse essence that made circulation several times more difficult.
At the very centre of his chest, where the runes seemed to have sealed the core of his Spark circulation, was not really a seal. It looked like some sort of barrier that made the task extremely difficult.
’I see... So it was just semantics, or maybe the creator’s understanding isn’t as deep.’
It was not.
The cycle of flow had to do with sustaining the barrier with the core hidden in the cuff’s mechanism. More impressively, too, was the material the cuffs were made of. Adam had realised he could not simply brute force his hands out of it.
It would have been a shitty device otherwise.
After a little over an hour of observation while enduring snarky remarks and occasional blows to the stomach and slaps to the back of his head, Adam had understood more than enough to get out of the cuffs.
He had familiarised himself with the wavelength runes worked on.
"We’re almost there."
Adam froze, his thoughts coming to a sudden halt. He suddenly felt cautious about the entire situation. What if this had nothing to do with those three, but their parents rather? What if it was someone else entirely? What if those he would meet were at a higher realm than he could handle?
As the dreading maybes invaded his thoughts, Adam’s heart began racing. His initial plans now seemed foolish. What if he never returned after they succeeded in doing whatever they planned on doing to him?
’This was a bad idea...’
Taking a deep breath to calm his chaotic thoughts, Adam focused on the runes and matched the runes’ wavelength. After studying the runes and understanding what they stood for, creating a counter-rune based on his intent came almost too easily.
’Runes are based on intent, and inscribing understanding into resonating symbols that are almost self-sustaining. But where are the symbols and shapes from?’

The question came out of nowhere, but it could wait. Focusing on the centre of his chest, his intent and Spark merged into a single defining purpose that synthesised the exact same essence, but in reverse.
His synthesised essence slammed into the spherical barrier like a battering ram. In his perception, everything seemed massive and clear, but in reality, that point was so tiny that it was almost non-existent.
The seal shuddered and then cracked, spiderwebbing across its surface area until it reached the critical threshold. And then, like glass, it shattered. His counter runes rushed through his circulation pathway, neutralising the enchantments binding to them.
Adam snapped out of his unique perception state, the surrounding sound and presence registering once more. As the abductors continued to chat among themselves, a sudden click resounded, the sound almost too loud.
"..."
For a moment, the resulting silence could almost be tasted. Four heads snapped to Adam’s wrist, where the cuffs had clicked open and smouldered like a short-circuited device.
Greg stepped on the brakes, but Adam had already made his move. The two guys who sat at Adam’s sides had not even snapped out of their shock when Adam’s body seemed to ripple with orange flames.
"Sh—"
An explosive wave of flames erupted from Adam’s body with devastating force, swallowing everything around him. The car exploded violently, hurtling the abductors and debris outward.
