Moments after the explosion, a cacophony of honking cars and screeching tyres broke the usual cadence of traffic. Adam landed and looked around, the smoke slowly dissipating. He was almost naked at this point, save for the trousers that had been reduced to shorts.
Unbothered by the state of his clothes or the chaos around him, Adam tried to gather his bearings. He realised he was on a flyover highway, but did not recognise the area.
"Oh, my God! Are they alright?!"
"Someone call the police!"
"Young man, what’s happening?!"
As the commotion continued around the site of the explosion, Adam looked to where the four guys were sprawled, groaning and nursing their burns and injuries.
Fortunately, no other vehicles were seriously caught in the explosion, as he held back significantly. But traffic had come to a complete halt around the site.
"Did a fight break out between them?"
"Young man, can you tell us what’s happening?!"
Adam sharply turned his head to see people stepping out of their cars and pointing at him. Some had their phones out, recording the scene. He turned to the woman who had asked that question but did not reply.
He wasn’t sure what to do next. He had seen enough to know which direction to take off, but that would make him look guilty. At the same time, waiting here could also mean more trouble if there were more of them.
"T-They captured me." He decided to come clean. "I’m a student of North Star Academy."
"North Star?!"
"Just stay put and don’t go anywhere." A man instructed as he too picked up his phone to make a call.
Adam nodded and stepped back from where his abductors were lying. Loud honks continued to sound all over the flyover, many unaware of the situation.
’The academy will definitely see this in no time,’ he deduced as he looked at the number of phones out and recording. ’But will Mr Princeton come here?’
Adam wasn’t sure, as it was simply wishful thinking on his part. But a part of him wanted to see if he’d make an appearance. He lowered his gaze and looked at himself.
Pulling a set of clothes out of thin air would definitely raise eyebrows and questions he didn’t want to answer. With that thought, he decided to wait for law enforcement to get here.
’Damn it. My phone is gone.’ It was only now occurring to him as he tapped his back pocket for his wallet. His phone had been in his car when it went boom.
Only his wallet and IDs survived.
’Mom and Dad will definitely be worried.’ He thought with a frown. ’They might even come here if word reaches them.’
His gaze naturally shifted back to his abductors. Like him, their clothes were mostly scorched, exposing burnt skin and bleeding cuts. The one known as Greg, and ultimately the one in charge, glared at Adam with fury in his eyes.
The guy had his left hand in his pocket, an awkward position to be in for someone injured. That was not how Adam saw him when he first looked at their miserable state. Before his thoughts could even spiral, multiple sirens rang from the distance.
Adam let out a sigh as he turned around. They were not yet in sight, but he wasn’t worried. Unlike civilian vehicles, the law enforcement vehicles were specially built to hover over other vehicles when needed. As such, the halted traffic was no obstacle to them.
"Hey, kid!" The man who had told him to stay put called out. "The academy is also on their way. It will all be over soon!"
Adam nodded in acknowledgement. Whether the man actually believed he was a student or not did matter. Whatever the truth was, the authorities and the academy would sort it out.
"D-Do y-you think this is over?!"
The sudden question snapped several heads over.
Adam turned to see Greg with the same death glare in his eyes. The guy had recovered enough to sit up, clutching his bleeding arm, his left hand out of his pocket.
Wondering what Greg meant, he asked, "What are you talking about? The police are already here. Even if I am arrested along with you guys, my name can be easily cleared."
"H-hehehe..." Greg chuckled sinisterly. "We’ll see about that."
BOOM...!
"AHHH...!"
"RUN...!"
An explosion in the direction they had been going resounded with a devastating boom, startling him. Someone’s car seemed to have exploded out of nowhere. Adam narrowed his eyes cautiously.
The timing of the explosion was too suspicious. He looked at a grinning Greg and promptly made the connection. ’His people are here!’
BOOM...!
Another explosion startled him, making him take a step back. People were already rushing away from the explosions, their screams and calls for help echoing all around him.
’Are they crazy?!’
Adam continued to take careful steps back as more and more people ran for their lives. He could not believe people could actually cause this much destruction and possible deaths in the heart of a city, much more when the police were close by.
Several more explosions resounded as black vans appeared in the distance. Atop the very first one was a man wearing a tactical vest, showcasing his impressive muscular disposition and tattoos. On his face was a skull tactical mask, the imposing design adding a dangerous vibe to him.
In his hand was a launcher he used to destroy the cars in their path.
"Hehe... Did you think we were just some ruffians simply doing someone’s bidding for some measly money?!" Greg’s mocking voice reached Adam, drawing his attention once more. "T-The police aren’t going to save you, Adam! You’re getting captured one way or another."
Adam felt his heart beating rapidly, his fear steadily rising. No sooner had Greg spoken those alarming words than several people in similar masks jumped out of the approaching vans. They dashed forward with ruthless momentum.
’Shit!’
Adam took off as well, jumping over and sliding across several vehicles. There was no way he was going to stand around and be captured again. He looked back for a moment, and his eyes widened in horror, his heart sinking.
The skull-masked man with the launcher was speeding after him like a ghost!
