While Others Evolved, I Understood Reality
Chapter 53: Matriculation and OrientationTwo days passed in a blink.
Adam had to spend a lot of time reassuring his mother that he was fine and that what he went through was not too serious. His mother had even wanted him to leave the academy, and had it not been for his master, he might truly have been taken away.
His father, on the other hand, had seemed out of it. Adam had never seen his father look so serious and stone-faced. It was as though the man was on the edge of exploding at the slightest provocation.
When night came, his parents had to return to their temporary lodging in the city.
That night, while most students were in attendance at a party Adam had forgotten all about, another piece of news spread across the entire city. Several places all over the city were attacked by some unknown assailants, resulting in the gruesome killing of several hundred people.
Most of the killings had a similar pattern to the killings done at that nightclub, hinting at the same person or group responsible.
Investigations into the killings revealed that those who had been murdered were a part of a syndicate called Black Dragons; the very same syndicate that was responsible for the abduction of Adam Highstein.
But the most shocking aspect of those killings was the high-profile individuals who also lost their lives that night. The CEO of one defence industry company lost their life that night.
The uproar brought forth by that information could only be imagined. Was that CEO part of the Black Dragons? Was whoever was responsible for killing those gang people sending a message? What was the police doing about the issue?
A maniac could not be running around the city killing whomever they pleased. Whatever the case, the Black Dragons were no more. As for those who survived, or were rather spared, they turned themselves in.
The day that followed came with another revelation that shocked most people in the know. One of the vice-principals of the North Star Academy, a man who went by the name Asher Princeton, had stepped forward to announce that Adam Highstein was his disciple.
Those who knew or knew of him could not believe their ears. Asher Princeton was one of the most prominent personalities in Academy City and the entire Federation as a whole. He was not the type to tie himself down with such responsibilities.
Whatever the case may be, that announcement of his was not so simple. It was a message to anyone who had ideas about Adam. The smart ones were able to connect the killings to his doing, but kept that knowledge to themselves.
Some things were best kept silent.
When Adam’s father and mother came to see him one last time before returning home, he noticed the change in his father’s demeanour. It was like he had gotten something off his chest.
Adam had a keen suspicion that his father was somehow involved in the killings. Then again, he didn’t mind. Those bastards deserved whatever they got. After another round of assurances, especially to his mother, his parents left.
By the end of the given grace period, all students across all year groups had returned to the academy. So much had happened in such a short time span that it had actually felt like days.
It was now the day the academy ushered the new badge of first-years into the academy. Adam hadn’t had any visits from the other students, as he had been occupied by his parents and master
Smartly dressed in his academy uniform, Adam made his way to the ground floor of the dormitory. And as usual, gazes of all kinds followed his every move. Adam carried a nonchalant expression on his face as he made his way to the convoy of buses that would take them to the Event Hall.
From what he had observed so far, it seemed each class type had a different shirt colour. Those who chose the first class type wore a light green shirt under their jacket, depicting their explorer specialisation. They numbered the most among all other class types.
Those who chose the second class type, combining combat with the sciences, wore blue-grey shirts, while the third class type, those who only pursued the sciences, wore white shirts.
He wore a light blue shirt underneath, depicting his chosen class type. And as one would expect, he barely saw anyone wearing the same colour he wore.
Adam recalled taking the written exams with eleven others. Now, however, he only counted a little over five, including that silver-haired girl. The two exchanged a brief glance at each other before the girl boarded her bus.
As for those who wore red beneath their jackets, Adam had very little to say about them. From the way they carried themselves to the way the other students surrounded them like servants, it was clear they were the elites.
Amongst them were the two morons he had humiliated during the Survival Trial. They walked as though they had a chip on their shoulders, which wasn’t far from the truth. Adam only glanced at them before shifting his gaze.
But one of the elites in particular stood out like a sore thumb.
Adam recalled seeing him two days ago. At the time, he hadn’t realised he was the one who had come in second place during their evaluation. But what came as a surprise to him was learning that he was the son of the Federation Chairman.
’No wonder his last name sounded familiar,’ he silently realised as he drew closer to one of the buses.
"Adam!"
However, before he could step onto the bus, he heard a familiar voice call out his name. Turning around, he spotted a broadly smiling April waving at him.
Seeing the pink-haired girl put the very first smile of the day on his face. The girl seemed to have been in the company of some other girls of the same class type when she called out his name.
These girls looked his way for a moment, said something to April and then stepped away. April then rushed over to his side, her cheerful energy broadening the smile on his face.
"It’s been a while, hehe," April said excitedly.
"Technically three days, but whatever," Adam responded with a soft smile and then gestured at the bus. "Let’s get on board before we’re reprimanded for delaying departure."
The two climbed into the bus and found two empty seats. Adam took the seat closest to the window while April sat beside him. Before long, the convoy of buses took to the road.
"Hey, Adam. I’ve heard a lot of things since I arrived." April asked after some time, staring at Adam’s side profile with a concerned expression. "Are you alright?"
"I’m fine, April," Adam replied with a reassuring smile. "And since you’re already aware, then you should know it’s all been taken care of."
"Yeah..." The pink-haired girl lowered her gaze. "...I guess you’re right."
April didn’t sound very convinced. But since Adam wasn’t interested in speaking about it, then she would let it go. She suddenly double-tapped her cheeks as though trying to wake herself up.
Adam raised a brow seeing the girl’s strange actions.
She then looked at him with that same cheerful spirit and grinned, "This is going to be so much fun. Aren’t you excited?"
Adam did not immediately reply, wondering where the girl got her cheerful energy from. He would have perhaps felt the excitement she spoke of a few days ago. Now, however, he was just going with the flow.
Once this ceremony was over, he would dive straight into his studies and training; nothing else mattered to him.
