Why Are the Psychos Obsessed with a Mere NPC?
Chapter 164 - 163: Did You Bleed?Jian Yu bent down slightly and took Xi Yu’s hand.
Their eyes met, and she was a little unsure of how to begin.
Many people say you shouldn’t get involved in the karma of others, because you might end up suffering their fate for them.
Jian Yu was a firm believer in that sort of mystical, esoteric stuff, especially after transmigrating into the book.
That was why she rarely offered to help on her own initiative.
She didn’t know the Xi Family, nor was she clear on Xi Yu’s relationship with his mother. Sometimes, taking the initiative was just a self-satisfying act.
Even if she really did have the ability to cure Xi Yu’s mother, it was something he should be the one to ask for.
Jian Yu thought for a moment and decided to leave the choice to Xi Yu. "You... listen carefully to what they’re saying."
’Listen to what?’ Xi Yu looked up, his reflexes sharp as he quickly grabbed Jian Yu’s hand before she could pull it back.
No one was speaking. A trace of fascination flickered in his tea-brown eyes, and following his heart’s desire, he leaned down for a light kiss.
Pei Yin was annoyed.
It seemed that no matter how many of them were around, he was always the one who got the least of Jian Yu’s attention.
Pei Yin couldn’t resist kicking the hem of Xi Yu’s uniform.
He cut in, "While it’s normal for you to be all lovey-dovey and clingy—I can get used to it, I can handle it—do you still want your mom to ever stand up again?"
’Mom?’ Xi Yu almost didn’t register the word.
In their clan-based society, he had grown up always calling her "Mother."
Thinking Pei Yin had developed an antidote, he turned his head. "You found a way?"
Pei Yin jutted his chin toward Jian Yu. "Si Xu said she might be able to."
A subtle change came over Xi Yu’s gaze.
He tightened his grip on Jian Yu’s hand, his pupils trembling.
He didn’t ask if she could help him, nor did he say he wanted to take her straight back to the Xi Family.
His eyes filled with hope, but the first words out of his mouth were, "Baby, are you sleepy right now?"
"I’ve had enough sleep. I want to go for a walk," Jian Yu said, squeezing his fingers in return. "I can’t guarantee a good outcome."
She watched as Xi Yu nodded, his eyes red-rimmed. He slowly leaned over and rested his head sideways on her lap, his gaze gradually softening.
Pei Yin looked away. ’So annoying.’
Si Xu’s brows were tightly knitted, his eyes fixed on Xi Yu’s and Jian Yu’s clasped hands.
Ling Yanzhi raised an eyebrow, glancing at Si Xu.
The two met each other’s gaze. One had learned patience, while the other, having just had his first taste of sweetness, couldn’t help but let resentment seep into his eyes.
Holding his breath in frustration, Pei Yin was the first to fly out of the side hall. "I’ve applied for a leave of absence. The Starship is waiting outside."
Si Xu straightened his cuffs. "I might be needed, so I’ll go with you."
Jian Yu watched them fly out, one with white feathers and the other with black wings, a stark contrast in color.
She stood up and tried to condense a Jellyfish as well.
Her fingers touched, and it dissipated.
’It can’t carry me for now.’
Ling Yanzhi chuckled lightly, wrapped an arm around her waist and legs, and lifted her with one arm. "I’ll carry you."
"..." Xi Yu’s arms were empty once again, and he could only follow along blankly.
Even a small Starship could hold over fifty people; they were generally used for class outings.
Looking at the others sitting so close to each other, Jian Yu hesitated for a moment.
She looked left and right before choosing to sit next to Ling Yanzhi after all.
「Destination: the Imperial City.」
Pei Yin pulled up a report for Jian Yu. "This is the previous diagnosis. The most recent one was three months ago. You can take a look first."
He glanced at the sullen Xi Yu and helped explain how the accident had happened.
Jian Yu listened while reading the report on the Star Brain.
Name: Chu Qianqian, 43 years old, normal person.
Jian Yu glanced quickly at the patient’s information before carefully flipping through the subsequent data.
She had guessed it might be related to a Primordial Beast, but she hadn’t expected it to be connected to the incident on the Planet of Ruin nineteen years ago.
With Pei Yin’s narrative accompanying the injury report, the situation gradually became clear to Jian Yu.
Chu Qianqian had been out for a walk to clear her head when she happened to run into Sister Ai Yi, who was desperately escaping a human research experiment.
The experiment was initiated by an Admiral possessed by a Soul Ghost Body, but the ones who harmed Sister Ai Yi were a group of Awakened who only followed orders.
Sister Ai Yi had no goodwill toward humans. At the cost of most of her energy, she spread a toxic gas across the entire planet to make her escape, harming many innocent people in the process.
One of them was Chu Qianqian.
Jian Yu closed the Star Brain and blinked, trying to relieve the dryness from not having blinked for a long time.
’Is it just about healing her legs?’
Technology is so advanced now, and the Xi Family isn’t some powerless, non-influential household.
She looked at Pei Yin. "Do you guys remember that teacher who locked me up?"
The mantis Awakener. His arm was also contaminated with toxin, but in the end, he had it replaced with a prosthetic and it didn’t affect his normal life.
"The situation is different." Pei Yin opened the window for some fresh air.
The wind gently rustled the ends of his slightly long hair.
That streak of dyed cyan made the narrow corners of his squinted eyes seem all the more captivating.
"This is the difference between a normal person and an Awakener. Normal people can only force the toxin to a standstill; they can’t get limb replacements."
Pei Yin tapped his thigh lightly, turning to the side to address the confusion in Jian Yu’s eyes.
"Primordial Beast toxins are more potent than those from Mutant Beasts. When the toxin enters the body, an Awakener can sacrifice a limb to survive and prevent it from spreading."
This is based on an Awakener’s Self-healing Ability.
The Spiritual Source Energy within an Awakener’s body has strong cell-remodeling and regenerative properties.
"When the toxin spreads, the Spiritual Source Energy automatically identifies the infected tissue. Once the toxin is marked as a pathogen that must be shed, an Energy Barrier will actively form at the point of severance, blocking the toxin from flowing back."
"But for normal people, their bodies don’t have this kind of mobilizable Spiritual Source Energy. They can only rely on their own immune systems to suppress the toxin’s spread."
"If a limb is amputated, not only will there be no Energy Barrier to seal the wound, but the collapse of the immune system will accelerate their death."
That’s why after Chu Qianqian’s accident, Si Xu could only choose to halt the toxin in her legs.
Jian Yu pressed her lips together.
Pei Yin stared at the reddish blush at the corners of her eyes.
On a sudden whim, he asked, "Have you been bleeding these past few days? How have you been dealing with it?"
Jian Yu froze for a second. "What?"
Si Xu spoke up coolly, "I used a special medicine. There was no bleeding."
It wasn’t like he watched all those educational videos for nothing.
Jian Yu’s head was buzzing.
Pei Yin was struck dumb, then shot him a look that could kill. "Who asked you that! You’re disgusting!"
He tried to defend himself. "I meant, have you been injured?"
Si Xu answered before she could, "She wasn’t injured. I was very gentle."
Furious, Pei Yin crossed his arms. "Do you even know what I was asking? I was asking about her period! You’re a man, what are you butting in for?"
Jian Yu glanced at them. "I’m on medication to control it, so I can’t get my period."
The atmosphere turned bizarre.
Xi Yu’s thoughts had already drifted back home.
Yang Zhang popped out from him and nestled on Xi Yu’s shoulder.
It propped itself up on its tentacles and quickly crawled along Xi Yu’s arm over to Jian Yu.
"Ayan was first. Ah Xu cut in line to be second."
Yang Zhang’s two round eyes gazed at Jian Yu.
Its voice was flat and cold. "Ayue wants to, too. Likes Baby."
It stuffed a small apple into Jian Yu’s hand.
Ling Yanzhi’s arm was wrapped around Jian Yu’s waist.
He leaned his body down with a low laugh, his shoulders shrugging slightly.
Jian Yu gripped the apple, her expression stiffening.
Feeling the pressure, she turned her head, and her lips accidentally brushed against Ling Yanzhi’s cheek.
Ling Yanzhi raised an eyebrow. In front of everyone, he bent his fingers and lightly wiped his cheek. "Smells so good."
The Space Ring on his finger glinted with a cold, silver light, inexplicably stinging the eyes of the other men.
Si Xu’s fingers curled. ’Second?’
’Although I’d long suspected it.’
’To think I was actually second...’
’Why was I second? On what grounds was I second!’
Si Xu’s chest heaved erratically as he pretended not to have heard what Yang Zhang said.
’As long as I’m determined enough, I’m the first.’
Pei Yin understood, and he was extremely displeased. "So I’m the only one waiting for her to get better? I’m the only innocent one here?"
He recalled how, aside from being drowsy for a few days when she helped Shen Yinhong form a Contract with an Alien Beast, Jian Yu had actually been in great health otherwise.
His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he deliberately stretched out his long legs. "Shouldn’t you put me in the queue, too?"
The Starship slowly began its descent.
Ling Yanzhi straightened up, a flash of crimson in his eyes.
He stood and took Jian Yu’s hand, interrupting Pei Yin’s bid for favor.
Feeling the tug, Jian Yu turned back.
Looking at Xi Yu’s gloomy expression, she hesitantly wiggled their tightly intertwined hands.
"We’re here, Ayue."
