Why Are the Psychos Obsessed with a Mere NPC?
Chapter 168 - 167: CooperationJian Yu hadn’t been to District 2 much. The last time she came was for a school-wide group physical.
It felt completely different from the daytime. Maybe it was because there were fewer people around, but walking down the road, she felt a strange sense of calm.
Shen Gu was still shaken up by the incident in the auditorium. "You scared me, disappearing so suddenly."
He forgot all about personal space and leaned in close to Jian Yu.
As they walked, the hem of his uniform brushed against her.
"I was worried Yan Yu had used some bizarre method to get revenge on you in secret. I even brought the Chief and picked a fight with him."
Shen Gu sucked in a breath. "Who knows how much poison was released from those two holes the Chief gave him. I heard Yan Yu was laid up in the infirmary for half a week and barely even participated in the Beast Taming competition."
Jian Yu wasn’t one to be forgetful. It didn’t take much effort for her to remember.
Her tone was a little uncertain. "He’s an Awakener himself. Skipping the Beast Taming competition shouldn’t be a huge loss for him, right?"
"He doesn’t need a Contracted Beast, but the people from his academy do." Shen Gu walked over and swiped his card.
He led Jian Yu into the District 2 laboratory building.
"Each Planet Academy has two to four team leaders responsible for protecting their students. When necessary, they even have to help with the Contract process."
"After Yan Yu got injured, his position was taken by a replacement candidate. When he gets back, a loss of prestige is one thing, but the academy’s rewards and future resource allocations will also be snatched up by others."
Shen Gu stopped walking.
He added gossipily, "I heard he managed to squeeze two people in this time—that ’white moonlight’ you mentioned, and her sister."
Jian Yu just said, "Oh," showing little interest.
She asked about Shen Yinhong. "How’s your cousin? Did everything from the other day get sorted out?"
A flicker of anger crossed Shen Gu’s face.
"Shen Ming wouldn’t allow it. But my father stepped in and got my cousin removed from Shen Ming’s branch of the family."
"Oh, right, my cousin changed her name. She picked a really hasty one for herself."
"She’s calling herself Shen Qing now. She said it’s because she feels so ’light’ now, totally unburdened. I think she’s being a little silly."
Jian Yu opened her mouth, but before she could speak, the sky suddenly darkened.
Shadows fell, blocking out the sun.
She looked up and saw the blur of countless flapping wings—Contracted Beasts of every color imaginable.
There were even people leaping about, clearing seven or eight meters with a single bound.
Jian Yu squinted, trying to make out their uniforms. "They don’t seem to be from our school?"
’Judging by their trajectory, it looks like they’re heading right for me.’
Shen Gu was unconcerned. "There’s still the challenge tournament and the hatching competition. They’ll probably be here until next month."
A few people landed, one after another.
"Jian Yu, I need to talk to you."
A familiar voice rang out.
Shen Gu whipped his head around. "Him again? He’s impossible to shake."
Shen Gu muttered, "I can’t believe he still has the nerve to show his face."
Jian Yu turned and saw the man in the golden wolf mask.
This time, Yan Yu had many people behind him, each wearing a silver or white mask.
He made an imposing entrance with a grand entourage.
But being blocked outside the District 2 laboratory building, he also looked quite pathetic.
Yan Yu’s bone-deep arrogance only amplified his rudeness.
He didn’t try to force his way in. "I suggest you think this through. An orphan like you, someone who clawed her way up from nothing, could never establish herself on Imperial Capital Star."
Yan Yu raised his voice. "You’re so self-righteous you can’t handle the truth. I said a few harsh words, and you went crying to them behind my back. At least I don’t treat you like a plaything, the way they do."
His gaze was mocking as he looked her up and down, invasive and offensive. "I got hurt, so they’ll be held accountable to some degree. You disappeared for seven days. That had something to do with them, didn’t it?"
Jian Yu looked bewildered. "Held accountable?"
It was almost laughable, really.
The truth was, not only was Xi Yu perfectly fine, but the Alliance had made several video calls to console him.
Jian Yu had wondered about this before—why the personas these characters had in the ’story’ were so different from their real personalities.
’Maybe someone saw Pei Yin during one of his experiments and thought he was cruel.’
’The others didn’t go around offending people; they just looked down on everyone. So why was the public reputation of Xi Yu’s group so terrible?’
Then she understood. The Alliance was purely to blame for making everyone hate them.
Jian Yu eyed Yan Yu dubiously and said slowly, "You might be overestimating yourself."
Yan Yu’s pride was once again trampled underfoot.
Humiliated, he shot an angry glance at the people he had brought with him.
They were all wearing masks, so he couldn’t tell if they were mocking him.
’He swore that once Xi Yu’s group lost interest in Jian Yu, once he got his hands on her, he would make her suffer.’
Yan Yu’s eyes remained fixed on Jian Yu.
He removed his mask with a smarmy flourish, revealing a handsome, sharp-featured face. His tone softened. "How about we have a chat?"
Shen Gu frowned, his guard instantly shooting up.
’Chief Xi Yu said I couldn’t let any sleazy guys hit on Jian Yu.’
Shen Gu’s face turned cold as he gave a direct warning. "If you don’t want to participate in the upcoming competitions, you’re free to leave at any time. Or do you need me to have someone escort you out?"
A figure appeared in front of Jian Yu.
Shen Gu shielded her with his body. "I’ll let the Chief deal with this. You head inside."
Jian Yu didn’t think she and Yan Yu had anything to talk about.
She pressed her lips together, her tone cold. "Beat them every time they show up. They won’t dare to come back."
Her eyes narrowed. A giant Jellyfish materialized, its thin tentacles lashing out in a blur of afterimages.
The scene instantly descended into chaos.
"AGH, AGH, AGH! IT’S BREAKING!"
"You useless trash! Control your Contracted Beast!"
Jian Yu glanced at a dumbfounded Shen Gu and tugged on his sleeve. "Let’s go."
...
Yan Yu was rarely humiliated, especially not in front of so many people.
Normally, an entrance like that would attract a swarm of fangirls, driving them wild for him.
His previously disdainful expression instantly curdled with resentment.
"You want to pursue her too?"
Yan Qin, wanting to secure the last project that would benefit her, had arrived early.
She hadn’t expected to witness such a spectacle.
Yan Qin’s tone was derisive. "What makes you think you can compete with Duan Feiye and his circle? Why would she turn them down for some second-rate goods like you?"
Even though Duan Feiye had rejected her, her crush on him had only grown stronger.
Hiding inside the lab building, Yan Qin continued her taunts. "So many people are after her. What makes you think you’re special? You should be grateful you’re too insignificant for them to even notice."
Yan Yu laughed, incensed. "And who the hell do you think you are?"
He could feel no spiritual power fluctuations from her; he could tell at a glance that Yan Qin was an ordinary person.
"Someone like you? Outside of this building, I could crush you like an ant."
Yan Yu released his Soul Beast. "You think I won’t dare to touch you just because you’re hiding in there?"
The Golden Wolf slowly advanced on the entrance.
Believing he could get in, Yan Qin quickly shouted, "You just want Jian Yu, right? I can help you!"
A vicious look entered her eyes. "I’m in the same project group as her. If you want to get to her, I can find an opportunity at any time."
Suppressing her fear, Yan Qin walked closer. "With her status now, you’d have to drag her through the mud before she’d even think you’re on her level."
Yan Yu winced at her crude words.
He surmised, "You didn’t mention anyone but Duan Feiye. What, you have a crush on him?"
Yan Yu shot back, "Duan Feiye would never look twice at you. Even if Jian Yu were dragged through the mud, you’d never take her place."
