Chapter 52

"Mom... Mom, where are you...?"

Jiang Li’s voice echoed softly through the quiet house as he stepped inside, still wearing his school backpack. The place felt unusually still that afternoon, as if it were holding its breath. He moved through the rooms, calling out again, but there was no answer. A faint unease settled in his chest, though he quickly pushed it aside and made his way toward the garden.

That was when he saw her.

In the distance, seated on a simple cement bench, was his mother.

She sat quietly, facing the garden as if lost in a world of her own. The warm afternoon sunlight fell gently over her, illuminating her pale skin and giving it a soft glow. Her long black hair rested against her shoulders, slightly tousled by the breeze, and for a moment, she looked almost unreal—like a painting brought to life.

She was beautiful.

So beautiful that Jiang Li couldn’t help but smile as he approached her.

But the moment he got closer, his steps slowed.

Her eyes.

Those warm honey-brown eyes he loved so much were unfocused, distant, and filled with a sorrow so deep that it made his chest ache. It was unfair, he thought, that someone so beautiful could carry such quiet pain within her. The faint scent of snowy rose lingered in the air around her, delicate yet melancholic, as if it mirrored her emotions.

Perhaps sensing him, she slowly lifted her gaze.

When she saw him, her expression softened instantly into a smile. Her eyes curved gently, her dimples deepening as warmth replaced the emptiness from before.

As if nothing had ever been wrong.

Jiang Li pretended not to notice.

Without mentioning what he had seen, he sat down beside her on the ground and rested his head comfortably on her lap, letting out a quiet breath.

"Is Mother trying to show off her beauty again?" he teased lightly, glancing up at her. "You know it won’t make me forget that you skipped the parent meeting again."

Her hand, which had been gently brushing through his hair, stilled immediately.

She froze.

"Really... I forgot," she said quickly, her voice tinged with guilt as her eyes widened slightly. "Xiao Li, I’m sorry."

Jiang Li couldn’t help but laugh softly at her reaction.

"I know," he replied, though his tone carried a hint of playful stubbornness. "But you know I won’t forgive you that easily."

At that, Xiao Ye rolled her eyes in mock annoyance before standing up. Jiang Li followed closely behind her as she walked into the kitchen. She opened the fridge and took out a small container she had hidden inside.

Blue bubblegum ice cream.

The moment Jiang Li saw it, his mood lifted instantly.

"Then Mother is forgiven," he declared without hesitation, earning a soft chuckle from her as she leaned casually against the counter.

For a moment, they simply stood there, looking at each other in silence.

But this time, the silence felt heavier.

Jiang Li slowly set the ice cream down, his expression shifting as his thoughts returned to something he had been holding back.

"Mother..." he began quietly, his voice more serious now. "Can we leave this place? Just you and me. I know somewhere we could—"

Before he could finish, a spoonful of ice cream was suddenly pushed into his mouth.

He blinked in surprise.

Xiao Ye smiled faintly, but there was something fragile beneath it.

"I would be happy if we could do that, Jiang Li," she said softly, her voice carrying a quiet resignation. "But... you know I can’t. My future is already here... and I think it will end here."

Jiang Li’s eyes widened.

In that moment, he wanted to scream.

He wanted to shout at her, to tell her that the man she refused to leave didn’t treat her right, that she deserved more than the suffocating life they were trapped in. He wanted to pull her away from it all, to force her to see what he saw so clearly.

But he didn’t.

Because deep down, he knew it wouldn’t change anything.

It would only make things worse.

So instead, he smiled.

Even as tears began to stream silently down his face.

"Does that still count," he asked, his voice trembling slightly, "when I have my own house one day? A big one... with a big family? I think my children would need their grandmother to tell them stories about how their father was when he was young."

He tried to laugh, but his lips shook as more tears slipped down.

Xiao Ye looked at him, her own eyes beginning to glisten. She smiled gently, her eyes closing as tears escaped despite her efforts.

"Of course," she said softly. "But I won’t come if it’s a small house. I want a big one. I want my son to be successful."

Jiang Li let out a weak laugh. "What a greedy grandma."

But her next words were quieter.

More fragile.

"Just don’t forget me, Jiang Li," she whispered. "That’s all I want. You can go anywhere... travel the world... but don’t forget me."

At that, Jiang Li couldn’t hold back anymore.

He stepped forward and wrapped his arms tightly around her, holding her as if she might disappear if he let go. His tears fell freely now, soaking into her shoulder as he clung to her.

They laughed and cried at the same time, sharing spoonfuls of melting ice cream as if trying to preserve the moment. At one point, Jiang Li even pulled her into a clumsy spin, mimicking ballet movements she once loved as a child.

"Xiao Li! I’m too old for this!" she protested, laughing breathlessly.

But she didn’t stop him.

Eventually, they both lost their balance and fell onto the ground, laughter spilling between them as the blue ice cream melted forgotten beside them.

A fleeting moment of happiness.

One that couldn’t last forever.

...

When Shen Yu turned and walked away, Jiang Li felt something inside him crack.

Every instinct in his body urged him to run after him, to explain, to fix whatever had just broken between them. But before he could move, his mother’s voice echoed in his mind like a chain pulling him back.

I want you to be successful.

The words wrapped tightly around him, holding him in place.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t chase after Shen Yu.

Not when his exam was starting in ten minutes.

The realization hit him all at once, making his chest tighten painfully as if he couldn’t breathe. Slowly, he turned toward Taehyun, his vision blurred by tears.

"You did this on purpose... didn’t you?" Jiang Li asked, his voice breaking despite his attempt to stay composed.

Taehyun didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, a faint smile curved on his lips.

"You never wanted to help me," Jiang Li continued, his emotions finally spilling over. "Why are you so cruel?"

The sob he had been holding back broke free, his shoulders trembling as he struggled to steady himself.

Taehyun watched him quietly before letting out a soft sigh and leaning casually against his car.

"Your problem," he began calmly, "is that you think you’re unreadable. You believe no one can see through the different personalities you create... so you can hide your real self beneath them."

Jiang Li froze.

"But you’re wrong," Taehyun continued, his voice sharp despite its calm tone. "It’s as clear as a mirror. And honestly... it’s pathetic. The more you try to hide it, the more obvious that insecure, ugly version of yourself becomes."

Each word struck deeply.

Before Jiang Li could react, Taehyun stepped closer, his presence suddenly overwhelming.

"Let me give you some advice," he said quietly. "Even if Shen Yu could love you... the two of you would never last. You’d keep breaking apart over and over again until you finally realize it’s pointless."

Jiang Li’s breath hitched.

"Because what Shen Yu hates the most," Taehyun added with a slight grin, "is exactly what you keep trying to hide—by pretending to be someone else."

Something clicked in Jiang Li’s mind.

Fragments of memories surfaced—Shen Yu’s voice, cold and firm.

I hate fake people.

I hate lies.

Jiang Li staggered back slightly, his hands trembling.

Was it true?

Was everything Taehyun said right?

Would he and Shen Yu really never work, no matter what he did?

"Jiang Li!"

A voice suddenly broke through his spiraling thoughts.

He turned, startled, only to see a girl from his department rushing toward him. Without hesitation, she grabbed his hand and began pulling him away.

"What are you doing standing here?" she scolded urgently. "The exam is about to start!"

Jiang Li allowed himself to be dragged along, his mind still in chaos.

As he was pulled farther away, he glanced back one last time.

Taehyun stood there, watching him.

Smiling.
