Chapter 51

"Just like everyone who had ever claimed they loved you..."
Those words struck Shen Yu with such force that the plastic bag slipped from his hand and hit the ground. For a moment, he couldn’t breathe properly. It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped around his heart and was squeezing it relentlessly, tightening with every passing second until even inhaling became difficult.
So it happened again.
He had been deceived—again.
For a fleeting moment, he had allowed himself to believe that somewhere in this cold, unrelenting world, there might exist someone who could love him simply for who he was. Not for being an Alpha. Not for being the CEO of a powerful company. Not for anything he could offer.
Just... Shen Yu.
But that hope now felt laughable.
When Jiang Li first met him, he must have assumed he was an Alpha. And when he realized he wasn’t, he decided to shape him into what he wanted instead. Like clay—something to be molded, adjusted, and remade according to someone else’s desires. It wasn’t the first time. Everyone, at some point, had tried to turn him into something he wasn’t.
And somehow, he had let it happen again.
The memory of that day in the hospital surfaced abruptly, vivid and suffocating. The moment he found out he had manifested as an Alpha—the pain, the confusion, the overwhelming sense of something being wrong—it all came rushing back. That transformation had never felt like a blessing. It had felt like something forced onto him.
Just like now.
His gaze lifted slowly, landing on Jiang Li.
Those honey-brown eyes were wide, glistening with unshed tears, filled with panic and something that looked painfully close to sincerity. For a brief second, Shen Yu felt an urge to laugh at the absurdity of it all.
He turned away instead.
It was enough.
"Shen Yu... Shen Yu, please..."
Jiang Li’s voice cracked behind him, breaking under the weight of a sob that followed. The sound should not have affected him—but it did.
And Shen Yu hated it.
He hated how his chest tightened at that broken plea. He hated how Jiang Li always cried like this, as though his emotions were genuine, as though everything he showed was real. His eyes, his actions, the way he clung—it all screamed affection.
But in the end, those same eyes could not accept him for who he truly was.
That was the truth.
Without looking back, Shen Yu walked to his car. His steps were quick, almost unsteady, though from the outside, he appeared composed as ever. Anyone watching would have seen nothing more than a calm, emotionless man.
No one would have understood the chaos inside him.
By the time he got into the car, the storm of emotions had already begun to overwhelm him. He leaned forward, gripping the steering wheel as he struggled to steady his breathing. His chest rose and fell unevenly, his thoughts tangled beyond recognition.
After a moment, he forced himself to start the engine.
He drove without focus, one hand on the wheel while the other covered his mouth, as if trying to physically contain everything threatening to spill out of him. The drive felt both too long and too short, his mind replaying everything he had just heard over and over again.
When he finally reached his apartment, he moved in silence, heading straight to his bedroom.
The glass container was still there.
Inside it—
The pill.
Shen Yu stared at it for a long time before letting out a quiet, humorless chuckle. Then he reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and made a call, his eyes never leaving the small object in the glass.
"Yu-er!"
He Lian’s voice rang loudly through the phone, even though he hadn’t held it to his ear yet.
"Mm," Shen Yu responded with a low hum.
There was a brief pause on the other end.
"What’s wrong?" she asked, her tone softening immediately, the cheerfulness from before fading into concern.
Shen Yu sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to suppress the intensity of what he was feeling. His chest felt unbearably heavy, as though something massive was pressing down on it.
"I need you to identify a pill for me," he said quietly. "Can you do that?"
He Lian hummed lightly, though there was a hint of complaint in her voice.
"So you only call me when you need something? Typical."
Shen Yu didn’t respond.
Sensing something was off, she didn’t press further.
"Alright," she said instead. "I’m still at work, so you’ll have to come here—"
The silence that followed made her pause.
"Fine," she added with a sigh. "Let’s meet at that bakery you used to like. I’m hungry anyway."
"Okay," Shen Yu replied.
Twenty-five minutes later, He Lian was already seated, casually eating pastries and sipping matcha. The bakery was closer to her workplace, which explained why she had arrived first.
When Shen Yu entered, he walked straight to her table and sat down without a word. Instead of his usual composed demeanor, he rested his head on his folded arms against the table.
He Lian tilted her head slightly, observing him as she took another sip of her drink.
Something was definitely wrong.
If he had been fine, he would have commented on her eating sweets by now. That was precisely why she had ordered them—to test him. But his silence confirmed her suspicions.
What she didn’t realize, however, was that the pastries themselves were part of the reason he couldn’t lift his head.
They reminded him of Jiang Li.
The thought alone made his chest tighten further.
As she opened her mouth to ask what had happened, she suddenly froze.
A scent filled the air.
Not just any scent—
Pheromones.
Whisky and rosewood.
Her eyes widened as she stared at Shen Yu in disbelief.
"Yu-er..." she whispered.
Shen Yu let out a quiet, almost bitter chuckle and finally lifted his head.
"I don’t want to talk about it," he said, cutting off whatever she might have asked next.
He reached into his pocket, took out the pill, and placed it carefully on the table.
"Can you check this for me?"
He stood up as if to leave, but her voice stopped him.
"I want you to come tomorrow," she said, her expression serious now. "I know things aren’t the same between you and Taehyun, but Taemin would really like you to be there. He likes you."
Shen Yu paused.
Then he turned slightly, a faint smile appearing on his lips—one that held no warmth.
"Why do you think things aren’t the same between us?" he asked quietly. "Why do you think that is?"
He Lian fell silent.
She knew.
Of course she knew.
She had been there through everything—since childhood, since the moment their lives had begun to intertwine. But knowing didn’t make it easier. At the time Taehyun betrayed Shen Yu, she had already been in a relationship with him for a year.
And now, he was her husband.
She closed her eyes briefly before forcing a small smile.
"I’ll tell Taemin we’ll visit you after his birthday party," she said gently.
Shen Yu nodded.
"Thanks for understanding," he replied before leaving.
He Lian watched him go, her expression troubled, before her gaze dropped to the pill on the table.
Later that day, Shen Yu arrived at work late, which resulted in him being assigned a night shift. By then, the sky had already darkened, heavy clouds stretching across it as the day came to an end.
Seated at his desk, he stared blankly at a file in front of him. It detailed a case involving a child using drugs, but he wasn’t actually reading it. His eyes were fixed on the page, but his mind was elsewhere.
He noticed Lin Yushen’s presence before he even looked up. The omega’s soft scent reached him first, gentle and calming in contrast to the chaos in his thoughts.
When Shen Yu finally lifted his gaze, he saw Lin Yushen peeking through the door, his long hair falling softly around his face.
"Are you okay, Ge?" Lin Yushen asked hesitantly.
Before Shen Yu could respond, his phone vibrated.
Seeing He Lian’s name, he picked up immediately.
"Who gave you this pill, Shen Yu?" she demanded, her voice sharp with urgency.
Lin Yushen frowned at the sudden intensity.
"No one," Shen Yu replied calmly. "I found it in my house. I think it belongs to Jiang Li."
There was a pause.
"Why would he..." He Lian began slowly. "These pills are extremely expensive, and they’re experimental. They’re meant to alter secondary gender—turning a beta into an Alpha or an omega. But they’ve never actually worked. People have tried them before, but there’s never been a confirmed success. I think—"
Shen Yu stopped listening.
His thoughts froze.
He had found the pill after his rut.
And no one else had entered his apartment.
Except Jiang Li.
Suddenly, Jiang Li’s trembling voice echoed in his mind.
"I... I was the one who agreed... I could have left, but I stayed... and I took advantage of your rut... I’m sorry..."
A sound escaped Shen Yu before he could stop it.
A laugh.
Broken.
Empty.
His phone slipped from his hand and hit the floor.
Lin Yushen froze, his eyes widening in alarm.
And Shen Yu—
He finally understood.
He had been a fool.
A complete, irreversible fool.
