Chapter 58

The light streaming in through the window made his eyes sting, forcing them to flutter open slowly as he adjusted to the brightness. The thin curtain swayed gently in the cold breeze, moving in soft, rhythmic motions that seemed almost hypnotic. For a moment, Jiang Li simply lay there, staring at it in silence, his mind still heavy with sleep. When he finally tried to sit up, a sharp soreness spread through his body, making him pause abruptly as his breath caught.

Then everything from yesterday came rushing back.

His eyes widened instantly, and almost without thinking, his hand moved down to his lower stomach. His fingers rested there carefully, almost protectively, as if afraid of what he might feel. His voice came out soft and rough from sleep, barely steady.

"Are you okay...?"

The question lingered in the quiet room. When he didn’t feel any pain, relief slowly settled into his chest, though it didn’t completely ease the tension in his body. He checked again just to be sure, his cheeks flushing a deep red as the memories became clearer in his mind, each one making his heart beat faster than the last.

Only then did he notice the emptiness beside him.

The right side of the bed was cold, untouched, and completely empty. His fingers curled slightly into the sheets as a quiet disappointment settled in his chest, heavier than he expected. For those few fragile moments after waking, he had wished—almost desperately—that Shen Yu would be there, lying next to him just like before, close enough to reach, close enough to prove that it hadn’t all been something fleeting.

But there was nothing.

Only silence.

He swallowed, his gaze lowering.

The difference was that... that day, Shen Yu had been in rut. He had manifested completely, overwhelmed by instincts that he couldn’t control. Jiang Li remembered Luo Xin explaining that when dominant Alphas entered rut, they often fell into a deep sleep afterward, sometimes for days, their bodies completely drained.

Three days.

Which meant this time... Shen Yu wasn’t in rut.

Jiang Li frowned slightly, the thought settling uneasily in his mind. Then another realization followed, making his eyes widen all over again.

Dominant Alpha.

Was Shen Yu... one of them?

Carefully, Jiang Li pushed himself up despite the lingering soreness. The moment his feet touched the floor, pain shot through his lower body, forcing him to steady himself against the bed. It hurt in a way that was painfully familiar, reminding him of that day—his first time—yet something about it felt different enough to make him pause.

He slowly became aware of his body.

He was clean.

There was no uncomfortable stickiness, no lingering traces like before. Instead, he was dressed in a loose white t-shirt and a pair of soft shorts that hung lightly on his frame. The fabric brushed gently against his skin, unfamiliar but comforting.

Jiang Li blinked.

Shen Yu had bathed him.

Cleaned him.

The realization hit him all at once, and his face flushed a deep, burning red. Without thinking, he pulled the blanket over himself and rolled slightly, letting out a soft, embarrassed laugh that he couldn’t quite hold back. His fingers clutched the sheets as he buried his face into them, inhaling deeply.

Shen Yu’s scent still lingered faintly.

Warm.

Heavy.

Comforting in a way that made his chest tighten.

He stayed there for a while, quiet and still, his gaze drifting back to the window. Snow had begun to fall outside, each flake descending slowly, covering the world in a soft blanket of white. The sight was calm, almost peaceful, making everything feel distant from reality.

After a moment, he reached for his phone and checked the time.

24th of December, 20XX.

Christmas Eve.

His gaze lingered on the date longer than necessary.

Maybe that was why Shen Yu had left.

Or maybe... he just didn’t want to face Jiang Li after what had happened.

At that thought, Jiang Li let out a quiet sigh, the small happiness he had felt moments ago disappearing as quickly as it had come.

Eventually, he forced himself to get up, moving slowly despite the discomfort. Each step felt heavy, but he continued toward the kitchen, the silence of the apartment pressing in around him. With the number of missed calls from Luo Xin and Guo Chen, he was sure they had already gone home to celebrate with their families.

Christmas Eve.

Christmas.

Together.

And him?

He would stay here.

Alone.

Eat ice cream, watch western Christmas movies, and pretend it didn’t matter.

It wasn’t like there was a warm family waiting for him. Going back would feel like forcing a bird that had painfully escaped its cage to return, just because something sweet was offered inside.

"Don’t forget me, Xiao Li..."

His mother’s voice echoed suddenly in his mind.

Jiang Li stopped walking.

A small, sad smile appeared on his lips as he lowered his gaze.

"I’m sorry... mama," he whispered softly.

A quiet, broken chuckle followed as he felt tears threaten to fall, though he forced them back. He shook his head slightly, as if trying to shake away the feeling.

He really was pathetic.

When he finally reached the living room, he paused.

There was a scent.

His eyes widened slightly.

It was familiar.

Guo Chen?

But that didn’t make sense.

Guo Chen had already gone home after finishing his exams earlier than both him and Luo Xin.

So then... who—

Confused, Jiang Li walked slowly toward the kitchenette. The moment he stepped inside, he froze.

Shen Yu was there.

Steam rose gently from the pots on the stove as he stirred something, his phone held between his shoulder and ear. The domestic scene felt so unexpected, so out of place, that Jiang Li could only stand there, staring as if afraid the moment would disappear if he moved.

"A-Mei... I’m not coming, even tomorrow," Shen Yu said calmly as he lifted the lid of a pot, the rich aroma of Kung Pao chicken filling the air.

"B-but Shen Yu... I don’t want to be alone again this time..." Shen Mei’s voice came through, shaky and fragile. "You left for days... do you know how worried I was?"

Shen Yu sighed softly, his movements steady as he continued cooking.

"Don’t go home, okay? If you don’t want to, then wait for me at my house. I’m sure you know the password. I’ll come there and spend Christmas Eve with you."

His voice was softer than usual.

Gentler.

After a while, Shen Mei agreed, and they settled on meeting at seven. Shen Yu ended the call and turned around.

His eyes widened slightly when he saw Jiang Li.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

Jiang Li froze, his heart pounding so loudly he was sure it could be heard.

"Yesterday... I lost control. I’m sorry," Shen Yu added quietly.

Jiang Li’s eyes became teary, and he let out a small, shaky laugh as he lowered his gaze. He had thought Shen Yu would leave again, that he would regret everything, that none of it had truly been his choice.

But Shen Yu was still here.

Cooking.

The smell made Jiang Li’s stomach growl softly.

He could cook.

So unfair.

And yet... he stayed.

He didn’t hug him.

He didn’t suddenly become warm.

But he stayed.

He asked if Jiang Li was okay.

He cleaned him.

He cooked for him.

On Christmas Eve.

A small smile slowly formed on Jiang Li’s lips, his eyes still slightly wet though no tears fell.

"I’m okay, Shen Yu," he said softly.

Ignoring the way Shen Yu looked at him, he walked past and stared at the food in awe.

"I didn’t know you could cook."

On the counter sat neatly prepared dishes—steamed rice, Kung Pao chicken, stir-fried vegetables, soup with mushrooms, tofu, bamboo shoots, and sliced fruit arranged carefully.

Jiang Li blinked.

"How...?"

He moved quickly to the fridge and opened it, only to freeze again.

It was full.

Completely full.

Milk.

Chocolate milk.

Banana milk.

Strawberry milk.

His eyes widened.

"My fridge... how... I..." he stammered, overwhelmed.

"Jiang Li," Shen Yu’s voice came from behind him, calm but firm, "the last few days... what did you eat?"

Jiang Li froze.

Slowly, he turned slightly, avoiding direct eye contact.

"There was food..." he muttered.

Shen Yu raised a brow.

"You mean one soda can?"

Silence filled the space.

Jiang Li didn’t know what to say.

His hand lifted nervously to his neck—

And paused.

There were multiple gland patches there.

His fingers stilled against them, and his eyes widened slightly as the realization settled in, something quiet but heavy forming in his chest as he stood there in silence, unsure whether to feel embarrassed, relieved, or something far more complicated that he could not yet put into words, especially when Shen Yu was still standing behind him, close enough for him to feel his presence without even turning around.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke, and yet the silence between them did not feel empty, but rather filled with something unspoken, something fragile, something slowly shifting into place.
