Chapter 59

When Jiang Li’s fingers brushed against the multiple gland patches on his skin, he froze completely. His breath caught in his throat as his movements stilled, and his eyes slowly widened as he lifted his gaze toward Shen Yu. For a brief second, his mind felt empty, unable to process what he was seeing, but then realization began to settle in, slow and heavy, like something sinking beneath water.

The only person who could have done this... was Shen Yu.

But why?

The question echoed in his mind again and again, circling without end, refusing to settle into a clear answer. It repeated itself like a quiet mantra, growing louder the longer he stood there. His thoughts tangled together until they became suffocating, pressing against his chest, making it harder to breathe.

Only after taking a slow, steady breath did he manage to calm himself enough to think of asking.

Before he could speak, however, Shen Yu—who had been watching him the entire time—noticed the confusion written clearly across Jiang Li’s face, especially in those expressive honey-brown eyes that seemed unable to hide anything at all.

Without rushing, Shen Yu turned away and reached for the stove, switching it off with a soft click that broke the silence between them.

"I was worried that if I didn’t put the gland patches on... what happened yesterday might repeat itself," he said calmly, his tone even, as if he had already expected the question long before it was asked.

Jiang Li stared at him for a moment, the tension in his chest loosening slightly as understanding replaced confusion. A small, soft smile slowly formed on his lips, subtle but sincere, touched with something quieter—something grateful.

"Thank you..." he said, his voice gentle and almost hesitant, as if unsure whether the words were enough.

Shen Yu didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he focused on the food in front of him, moving with quiet efficiency as he began preparing and plating the dishes. There was something steady about the way he worked, something grounding that made the space feel calmer without him needing to say anything at all.

Jiang Li watched him for a moment longer than necessary before stepping closer, hesitating briefly before speaking again.

"Can I help you?"

Shen Yu turned to look at him, his gaze lingering for a few seconds as if weighing the offer, as if considering more than just the question itself. Then he gave a small nod, silent but accepting.

Taking that as permission, Jiang Li quickly moved to assist, carefully carrying each dish to the small table near the living room. The table was low, so they sat on cushions placed on the floor, facing one another across the neatly arranged meal. Under normal circumstances, Jiang Li might have felt slightly embarrassed by the setup, but hunger quickly replaced any such thoughts the moment the rich aroma of the food reached him.

The scent of the chicken and the soup filled the air, warm and inviting, wrapping around him like something comforting and familiar, making his stomach tighten with anticipation.

But something felt off.

He realized that he hadn’t heard the soft clink of chopsticks or plates from beside him.

Turning slightly, Jiang Li glanced at Shen Yu—and paused.

The man hadn’t touched his food.

Instead, his attention was fixed on his phone.

Jiang Li didn’t know whether to laugh or feel something else entirely.

How could he?

He, who hadn’t even contributed to the cooking, was about to eat first while the one who prepared everything sat there distracted. Jiang Li lowered his gaze, pretending to focus on his hands as he lightly brushed at his nails, though his attention remained on Shen Yu.

When he looked more closely, he noticed something.

Shen Yu was typing.

The realization settled uneasily in his chest.

Who was he talking to?

The thought came quietly at first, but it didn’t stay that way. Slowly, a strange feeling crept in, unfamiliar yet sharp, something bitter that he couldn’t ignore no matter how much he tried to push it aside.

Jealousy.

It made his brows furrow slightly without him realizing it.

To distract himself, he cleared his throat softly and stood up, deciding to get a glass of water. As he passed behind Shen Yu, his eyes instinctively flicked toward the phone screen. He caught a glimpse—just enough to confirm that Shen Yu was chatting with someone—but before he could see more, the screen went dark.

Shen Yu had turned it off.

Jiang Li’s lips formed into a small, unconscious pout as he continued walking into the kitchen, trying to ignore the feeling lingering in his chest, though it refused to fade as easily as he wanted it to.

After drinking some water, he remained there for a second longer than necessary, staring blankly at the counter as if gathering himself before returning.

By then, Shen Yu had already started eating.

Jiang Li sat down again and picked up his chopsticks, beginning to eat as well. Still, his attention wandered, and he found himself glancing sideways more than once, unable to fully focus.

What he noticed was how little Shen Yu ate.

And how controlled his movements were.

Even the way he chewed seemed precise and restrained, something that made Jiang Li feel oddly self-conscious about his own habits, about the way he held his chopsticks, about the small, unconscious sounds he made while eating.

"How many days has it been?" Shen Yu asked suddenly.

Jiang Li nearly choked.

He coughed lightly, swallowing quickly before turning his head in confusion.

"Days?" he repeated, unsure if he had heard correctly.

Shen Yu looked at him steadily.

"How many days have you been pregnant, Jiang Li?"

Jiang Li froze.

Slowly, he placed his chopsticks down.

He didn’t know.

Not exactly.

He remembered when he found out, the shock, the disbelief, the quiet panic that followed—but that didn’t mean that was when it began. The thought alone made his chest tighten painfully. His fingers moved into his hair, gripping slightly as he tried to think, but nothing came, only fragments and blurred memories he didn’t want to piece together.

After a moment, he let out a quiet sigh and shook his head.

"I don’t know..." he admitted softly, his voice smaller now.

Shen Yu frowned slightly.

"How is that possible? Didn’t you go to the doctor?" he asked, his tone still calm but edged with concern.

Jiang Li’s gaze dropped at that, memories of the hospital surfacing in fragments that he didn’t want to revisit. Cold walls. Bright lights. Silence that felt too heavy.

He shook his head again, slower this time.

Shen Yu didn’t press further. He simply sighed and nodded faintly, though his gaze shifted downward, landing on Jiang Li’s hands. He noticed how they fidgeted with the hem of the oversized t-shirt, small movements that betrayed his unease without him needing to say a single word.

Something in Shen Yu’s chest tightened at the sight.

"Jiang Li..." he called softly.

"Mn..."

"Look at me."

Jiang Li hesitated, but after a moment, he slowly lifted his gaze, meeting Shen Yu’s eyes.

"I’m not angry," Shen Yu said, his voice steady but gentler than before. "I’m worried. Tomorrow, we’re going to the hospital."

Jiang Li’s eyes widened.

The word hospital alone made his chest tighten with fear, instinctively pulling something tense inside him. But Shen Yu’s tone softened the impact. There was warmth in it, something reassuring that eased the sharpness of his anxiety, making it easier to breathe.

After a moment, Jiang Li nodded.

They continued eating, the silence between them calmer now, no longer heavy, but quieter in a different way.

Then suddenly, Shen Yu’s phone rang.

He glanced at it, his eyes widening slightly when he noticed the time.

Six-thirty.

He answered, and immediately Shen Mei’s voice burst through loudly.

"Ge! Where are you? There’s a mall with Santa! He’s actually here even though it’s Christmas Eve!"

Shen Yu instinctively pulled the phone away from his ear.

Jiang Li nearly choked again, turning away to hide his laughter, his shoulders shaking slightly.

"Shen Mei, aren’t you a bit old for—"

"Who said that?" she interrupted loudly. "No matter my age, if I want to see Santa, I will! There’s even a grandma here!"

Her voice clashed with the loud music in the background, making it even harder to ignore.

Shen Yu sighed.

"A-Mei... I’m not spending Christmas Eve in a loud mall," he said flatly.

She whimpered dramatically.

"What? Why, Ge?"

Before he could respond, her attention shifted.

"Luo Xin!" she suddenly shouted.

Shen Yu frowned slightly, but her voice was already distant.

"See you later, Ge! Luo Xin!" she yelled before hanging up.

Silence followed.

Shen Yu stared at his phone, his eyes narrowing slightly.

The shift was too sudden.

Hours ago, she had been crying.

Now she sounded completely fine.

As if nothing had happened.

Jiang Li watched him quietly, then lowered his gaze again.

For some reason, the silence between them no longer felt empty.

It felt shared.

Fragile.

Quietly changing.

Neither of them knew when it had happened, only that the distance between them no longer felt as impossible as it once had.
