Chapter 60

After finishing eating, Jiang Li sat quietly, his gaze drifting toward Shen Yu, who was already standing by the sink, washing the dishes. The soft sound of running water filled the apartment, steady and calm, yet for some reason, it made Jiang Li feel smaller, like he didn’t quite belong in the moment unfolding before him.
Insignificant.
It wasn’t like he hadn’t offered. He had told Shen Yu that he would wash them, that he could at least do something, but Shen Yu had acted as if his words were nothing more than air—like they had never been said at all, like they held no weight.
So the only thing Jiang Li could do was sit there and watch his back.
Time passed slowly, stretching in a way that made every second feel heavier than it should have. Jiang Li didn’t realize how long he had been staring until his eyes suddenly widened.
Shen Yu was putting on his coat.
Was he leaving?
The thought hit him so suddenly that his fingers instinctively tightened around the edge of the table. His grip became firm, almost desperate, as a quiet panic began to rise in his chest, spreading quickly.
He didn’t want him to leave.
The warmth that filled the apartment... it had come with Shen Yu. And if he left, that warmth would disappear with him, leaving everything cold and empty again, just like before.
Jiang Li swallowed, his throat dry, before slowly pushing himself to his feet. His steps were hesitant as he moved closer, stopping just behind the Alpha. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, his heart beating faster with each passing second.
He wanted to say it.
He wanted to tell him to stay.
But the words felt heavy, stuck somewhere deep inside his chest, refusing to come out.
Because if he asked... what if Shen Yu still left?
The thought alone made his chest ache painfully.
Still, after a long moment of hesitation, he forced himself to speak, his voice quiet and uncertain.
"Are you leaving, Shen Yu...?"
Shen Yu turned at the sound of his voice, his gaze falling onto the omega standing behind him. Jiang Li wasn’t looking at him. His head was lowered slightly, his fingers already fidgeting with the hem of his t-shirt, twisting the fabric unconsciously.
Shen Yu watched that small movement before letting out a soft sigh.
"Yes, I’m leaving. What’s wrong?" he asked calmly.
Jiang Li froze.
His breath hitched ever so slightly, and Shen Yu noticed.
His brows lifted faintly as his eyes sharpened, studying Jiang Li’s expression more closely now, noticing the subtle changes—the tension, the hesitation, the quiet unease that lingered beneath the surface.
"Oh... it’s nothing," Jiang Li said quickly, forcing a small smile onto his lips. "I just wanted to ask... I was curious."
His voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
If Shen Yu hadn’t been paying attention, he might have believed it. But the slight tremble hidden beneath those words didn’t escape him.
And neither did Jiang Li’s eyes.
They were filled with something he couldn’t quite ignore—hurt, longing... and something deeper that the omega was trying desperately to hide behind that small, fragile smile.
It took time, but Shen Yu had begun to realize something about Jiang Li.
He was someone who wanted so much.
Yet never said it.
Shen Yu exhaled slowly, his gaze softening slightly as he looked at him more carefully.
"That’s not what you want, right... Jiang Li?" he asked.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened instantly as he looked up at him.
"What... do you mean...?" he asked, his voice quieter now, laced with confusion and a hint of fear that he couldn’t hide.
To Shen Yu, those honey-brown eyes looked far too innocent—almost fragile, like something that could break if handled too roughly. And when they started to glisten slightly, he couldn’t help but feel like he was the one causing it.
He closed his eyes briefly, exhaling through his nose before opening them again.
"I mean... you don’t really want me to leave, do you?" Shen Yu said, his voice steady but firm. "If you want something, say it. Stop acting like everything is fine. Your heart isn’t like that empty fridge of yours, Jiang Li. You can’t keep stuffing things inside and expect them to stay there without rotting. Eventually, it’ll hurt you."
Jiang Li stared at him silently.
The words sank in slowly, pressing into him deeper than he expected.
"But... my fridge isn’t empty anymore," Jiang Li whispered.
Shen Yu froze.
His eyes widened slightly as he looked at him, caught off guard by the unexpected response. For a moment, he said nothing, just staring at the omega in front of him.
Then, slowly, the corners of his lips lifted into a faint smile.
"Is that right..." he murmured.
Jiang Li nodded.
That small reaction made Shen Yu let out a quiet chuckle, and Jiang Li found himself staring at him again, unable to look away.
"Do you want me to leave?" Shen Yu asked once more.
Jiang Li shook his head immediately.
"I don’t want you to leave..." he said softly. "I want you to stay."
Shen Yu’s smile softened, and he nodded slightly.
"Why?"
Jiang Li hesitated, but only for a moment before answering.
"Because... I like you a lot," he admitted quietly.
Shen Yu’s eyes widened.
It wasn’t like he didn’t know.
But hearing it... spoken so openly like this... was something else entirely.
Jiang Li lowered his gaze again, letting out a soft, almost self-conscious laugh.
"You said I shouldn’t keep things in my heart," he continued. "This has been there for a long time... and I think it’s starting to rot."
His words were light, but the meaning behind them wasn’t.
Jiang Li didn’t know where the sudden courage had come from. It felt like his mouth was moving on its own, saying everything he had been holding back for so long—words that had been suffocating him for what felt like forever.
Maybe if he said them...
It would stop hurting so much.
Even if Shen Yu didn’t feel the same.
Even if he rejected him.
He just hoped... that Shen Yu wouldn’t leave him completely after this.
That was what he feared the most.
But Shen Yu didn’t shout.
He didn’t reject him.
Instead, he reached out and gently touched Jiang Li’s black-blond hair, his fingers brushing through the strands with unexpected softness.
"Why did you dye your hair?" Shen Yu asked.
Jiang Li blinked, surprised by the sudden change in topic.
"I liked having blond hair," he replied honestly.
Shen Yu nodded.
"Then why didn’t you dye it again?"
Jiang Li’s gaze dropped to the floor.
"I... don’t have the money," he muttered, embarrassment creeping into his voice.
Shen Yu hummed softly, then turned and walked away without another word.
Jiang Li stood there, confused, unsure of what just happened or what Shen Yu was thinking.
A minute later, Shen Yu returned, holding Jiang Li’s hoodie.
"Let’s go dye your hair, Jiang Li," he said.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened.
"N-No... I’m fine, I—"
Shen Yu raised a brow, his gaze sharpening slightly.
"Do you really not want to?" he asked.
Jiang Li froze.
He wanted to.
He really did.
But wasn’t this too much?
He had already taken so much from Shen Yu.
How was he supposed to repay him?
Then Shen Yu’s earlier words echoed in his mind.
If you want something, say it.
Jiang Li inhaled shakily, gripping his shirt tightly before nodding.
"I want to..." he whispered.
Shen Yu nodded and handed him the hoodie.
Together, they left the apartment and made their way to Shen Yu’s car.
As soon as Jiang Li got inside, his cheeks flushed red as a memory resurfaced—the last time he had been in one of Shen Yu’s cars.
This one was different.
Shen Yu noticed his expression and chuckled softly.
"It was my favorite car," he said.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened in panic.
"I’m so sorry! You didn’t throw it away, right? It can be cleaned, I—"
He stopped mid-sentence.
Shen Yu was laughing.
Not just smiling.
Laughing.
His hand covered his mouth slightly, but Jiang Li could still see it—a faint dimple appearing on his cheek, something that didn’t show when he simply smiled.
Jiang Li’s heart began to race uncontrollably.
Shen Yu turned toward him after calming down.
"Fasten your seatbelt," he said.
Jiang Li nodded quickly, doing as he was told without hesitation.
After a while, as Shen Yu drove, the traffic light ahead turned red, and the car came to a smooth stop.
Shen Yu glanced at him briefly.
"About what you said earlier... I didn’t reply because I didn’t know what to say," he admitted honestly.
Jiang Li’s heart, which had just begun to calm, started racing again.
"Is that okay?" Shen Yu asked.
Jiang Li’s eyes became teary, but he smiled and nodded softly.
Shen Yu...
That was more than okay.
Jiang Li looked quietly at the man beside him.
His heart still raced.
But for the first time, it wasn’t because he was afraid.
