Chapter 74

"I like you... Jiang Li..."
At those words, Jiang Li froze.
Everything around him seemed to come to a sudden halt, as though time itself had paused just to let those words settle into his chest. His heart did not race wildly like he had always imagined it would during the countless times he had replayed this moment in his mind. Instead, something else happened—his breathing hitched, growing uneven, as if the air had been pulled from his lungs without warning.
His hand slowly slipped out of Shen Yu’s grasp, his fingers lingering for just a second before letting go completely. He stared at the Alpha in disbelief, his eyes widening as he instinctively took a step back, as though distancing himself might somehow make the moment clearer.
"What did you say...?" Jiang Li whispered, his voice trembling slightly as he looked up at Shen Yu.
For a brief moment, Shen Yu looked confused. He hadn’t expected that reaction. He had imagined embarrassment, maybe even flustered happiness—but not retreat. Yet instead of stepping back or freezing in place, Shen Yu moved forward, closing the distance Jiang Li had just created.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened even more as he watched Shen Yu lean down, their foreheads gently touching. The warmth of that contact sent a quiet, steady feeling through him, grounding him in a way nothing else could.
"I like you..." Shen Yu whispered again, his voice soft but firm, as though repeating it made it more real.
"Say that again..." Jiang Li murmured, almost breathless, as if he needed confirmation that he hadn’t imagined it.
A small smile formed on Shen Yu’s lips. He took Jiang Li’s hands in his, holding them gently but securely, and looked directly into his eyes.
"I like you."
This time, Jiang Li’s heart reacted.
It began to beat rapidly, so fast it almost hurt, his breath catching in his throat as the weight of those words finally settled deep within him. A smile slowly spread across his face as he gazed up into Shen Yu’s dark eyes, unable to hide the overwhelming emotion rising inside him.
His heart—just like him—had needed to hear it again to believe it.
Unable to hold himself together any longer, Jiang Li leaned forward, resting his face against Shen Yu’s shoulder. His body trembled slightly, the emotions he had been holding back for so long finally spilling over.
Seeing this, Shen Yu’s eyes widened in alarm. He quickly placed his hands on Jiang Li’s shoulders, steadying him as he leaned down to look at his face.
"Are you okay...?" Shen Yu asked, his voice laced with concern.
Tears streamed down Jiang Li’s cheeks, but before Shen Yu could panic further, he realized something—the omega was smiling.
Then, suddenly, Jiang Li started laughing.
At first, it was soft, almost breathless, but it quickly grew into something uncontrollable. He covered his eyes with his hands as he laughed, tears continuing to fall down his cheeks.
He was so happy.
For how many months had he been yearning for this? For how many days had he waited, hoping for even the smallest sign that Shen Yu didn’t despise him?
And now, finally, Shen Yu wasn’t looking at him like a burden or something to avoid. He wasn’t treating him like someone insignificant.
He liked him.
He—Jiang Li—was liked by Shen Yu.
The thought alone felt surreal.
Shen Yu stood there, completely speechless, watching Jiang Li laugh and cry at the same time. For a moment, he didn’t know what to do. He simply watched, taking in the sight in front of him, before slowly stepping forward and wrapping his arms around Jiang Li.
He rested his head lightly against Jiang Li’s waist, holding him in a quiet, steady embrace.
Jiang Li immediately wrapped his arms around Shen Yu’s waist in return, holding onto him tightly, as though afraid that if he let go, this moment might disappear.
"If you like me... are you going to date me?" Jiang Li asked softly, pulling back just enough to look up at him.
Shen Yu froze.
His eyes widened slightly as he looked down at Jiang Li, the question echoing in his mind.
Date him.
It sounded simple, but to Shen Yu, it was anything but that.
He had never dated anyone before. The idea itself felt distant, almost unfamiliar. Love, to him, had never been something simple or pure—it had always been intertwined with pain.
His love for his family had brought him loss and betrayal, leaving behind scars that had never truly healed. His love for He Lian had also ended in wounds that lingered long after everything was over.
Every time he had opened his heart, it had been met with hurt.
That was why, even now, he couldn’t bring himself to call what he felt "love." He was afraid.
Afraid that giving it a name would somehow make it fragile. Afraid that if he allowed himself to fully step into it, it would only end in another scar he wouldn’t be able to recover from.
He had spent so much of his life running away from things like this. But now... he was tired of running.
He didn’t want to hide anymore.
He didn’t want to stand by and watch someone important slip away again.
"Shen Yu..." Jiang Li called, noticing the distant look in his eyes.
When there was no response, he called again, a little louder this time.
"Shen Yu."
Shen Yu blinked, snapping out of his thoughts as he hummed softly in response.
"Does your silence mean you don’t want to date me...?" Jiang Li asked, his lips pursing slightly as he spoke.
Shen Yu stared at that small, pouty expression for a moment before letting out a quiet sigh. A faint smile curved on his lips.
So once again... he would take the risk.
He would let this omega step into his life, into his heart, even if it meant facing the possibility of pain. Because for the first time in a long while, he felt like it might be worth it.
Leaning forward, Shen Yu gently pressed a soft kiss against Jiang Li’s cheek. As his lips touched the omega’s skin, he immediately noticed how cold it was.
"Let’s go somewhere warm," Shen Yu murmured, taking Jiang Li’s hand and leading him toward the car.
Jiang Li followed quietly, though a small part of him still felt uncertain. Shen Yu hadn’t directly answered his question, and that left a faint trace of doubt lingering in his chest. Still, the happiness from earlier overshadowed everything else.
He got into the passenger seat, settling in comfortably. As soon as he sat down, something suddenly crossed his mind.
"Shen Yu..." he called softly.
Shen Yu turned to look at him, his gaze attentive.
Jiang Li slowly reached out, his smaller hand extending toward him. When Shen Yu took it, Jiang Li guided his hand underneath his hoodie and shirt, placing it gently against his stomach.
There was a small but noticeable bump.
Shen Yu’s eyes widened as he felt it.
"Jiang Li..." he whispered, his voice filled with quiet awe.
Jiang Li smiled brightly at the way his name was spoken.
"Beanie... is growing," he said softly.
Shen Yu nodded, his gaze lingering there for a moment before he looked back up at Jiang Li.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
Jiang Li shook his head, still looking down at his stomach, his expression soft and thoughtful.
"Do you want chocolate cake?" Shen Yu asked after a moment.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened instantly, and when he looked up at Shen Yu like that, Shen Yu couldn’t help but chuckle.
Without another word, he started the car and drove toward a nearby bakery, his hand still resting protectively on Jiang Li’s stomach.
Eventually, he had to pull it away to drive properly, but the warmth of that moment lingered between them.
When they arrived, Shen Yu stepped out briefly and returned with a small chocolate cake and a bottle of cold milk. He handed them to Jiang Li, expecting him to eat, but the omega refused to do so alone.
In the end, Shen Yu was forced to eat with him.
He even ended up finishing the milk, despite the fact that he disliked it. The sweetness of the cake was overwhelming, cloying enough to make him feel slightly nauseous.
"Excuse me..." he muttered, opening the car door to go buy water.
Jiang Li chuckled softly, watching him.
"It’s not that sweet," he said, smiling as he lifted a fork toward his mouth.
But because he was smiling, he couldn’t hold it properly, and the fork slipped from his fingers.
As he bent down to pick it up, Shen Yu’s phone suddenly buzzed with a notification.
Jiang Li paused.
For a moment, he hesitated. Then curiosity slowly crept in.
He picked up another clean fork and continued eating, but his attention kept drifting toward the phone. His heart began to beat faster, not from excitement this time, but from curiosity he couldn’t quite suppress.
In the end, curiosity won.
Carefully, he picked up Shen Yu’s phone and turned it on.
To his surprise, there was no password.
The screen lit up, revealing that Shen Yu had been on a search page.
And the most recent search read:
"How to ask someone to be your partner."
Jiang Li’s eyes widened in shock.
The second fork slipped from his fingers, falling quietly onto the floor.
