Chapter 75
.
.
When the car door opened, Jiang Li was still facing the window, his reflection faintly visible against the glass as the outside lights blurred into soft streaks of gold and white. He wasn’t really looking at anything beyond the glass, though. His thoughts were far too loud for that. His cheeks were still flushed a deep red that refused to fade, the warmth lingering stubbornly across his face as if it had settled there permanently.
He held the small plastic fork loosely between his fingers, taking slow, absent-minded bites of the chocolate cake resting in his lap. Each bite was smaller than the last, as though he were trying to stretch out the moment, to delay something he couldn’t quite name. The sweetness coated his tongue, rich and heavy, but he barely noticed it. His attention was somewhere else entirely.
Then, gradually, something shifted.
The faint scent of Shen Yu’s pheromones began to fill the enclosed space of the car. It was subtle at first, almost unnoticeable, but slowly it grew warmer, more distinct, wrapping around Jiang Li in a quiet, comforting way. It wasn’t overwhelming or suffocating. Instead, it felt steady, grounding, like a presence that anchored him firmly in reality.
Shen Yu was here.
Not a dream.
Not something imagined.
Right beside him.
Jiang Li’s fingers tightened slightly around the fork as that realization settled in his chest. Slowly, almost cautiously, he turned his head, his gaze lifting to look at Shen Yu.
For a long moment, he simply stared.
Everything had changed so suddenly, so completely, that it felt impossible to grasp. Just hours ago, he had been unsure of everything—unsure of Shen Yu’s feelings, unsure of his own place in his life, unsure of whether he even had the right to hope. And now...
Now Shen Yu had said he liked him.
Not casually.
Not as a passing comment.
But sincerely.
Clearly.
Shen Yu wanted him.
The thought repeated in Jiang Li’s mind over and over again, echoing so loudly that it drowned out everything else. It felt fragile, like something that might disappear if he reached out too quickly or believed in it too deeply. A part of him was still waiting for the moment it would all fall apart.
That he would wake up.
That everything would return to how it had been before.
His gaze lingered on Shen Yu, unfocused and dazed, as if trying to memorize every small detail—the way his hands rested on the steering wheel, the calm line of his jaw, the quiet steadiness in his expression.
At that exact moment, Shen Yu seemed to sense it.
He turned his head slightly, his dark eyes meeting Jiang Li’s.
The sudden eye contact made Jiang Li’s breath hitch. His body stiffened instinctively, the fork pausing mid-air as if time itself had slowed down.
Before he could react, something cool and slightly damp touched his chin.
Startled, Jiang Li blinked and looked down.
A chilled bottle of milk.
Shen Yu had pressed it gently against him.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened slightly, surprise flickering across his face as his thoughts momentarily scattered. He reached out slowly, his movements almost careful, and took the bottle with both hands, holding it close as if it might slip away.
"Huh..." he murmured softly, the sound barely audible.
Shen Yu didn’t say anything in explanation. He simply gave a faint, almost casual smile before turning his attention back to the road, his hands steady on the wheel as the car began moving again.
The silence that followed wasn’t awkward.
It was calm.
The low hum of the engine filled the space, blending with the soft sound of tires against the road. Outside, the night stretched endlessly, the city lights flickering past in a quiet rhythm. Inside, it felt like a separate world—one that existed only for the two of them.
For a while, Jiang Li allowed himself to sink into that quiet.
But slowly, restlessness crept in.
His thoughts began to swirl again, too many emotions pressing against his chest all at once. To distract himself, he lowered his gaze back to the cake and resumed eating, bite after bite disappearing without much thought.
The sweetness built up gradually.
Until it became overwhelming.
He stopped suddenly, his brows knitting together as the rich chocolate coated his tongue too heavily. A dull ache spread through his throat and chest, making him wince faintly as he swallowed.
No matter how much he liked it... it was too much.
He stared down at the remaining cake, clearly reluctant to stop, before his gaze shifted to the bottle of milk in his hands.
And then he understood.
His eyes widened slightly.
Shen Yu knew.
He knew Jiang Li preferred flavored milk—banana, strawberry, chocolate—but all of those were sweet. Too sweet, especially after something like this.
That was why he had chosen plain milk.
Not by accident.
But deliberately.
Jiang Li’s fingers tightened around the bottle as a quiet warmth spread through his chest, deeper and softer than before. It wasn’t something dramatic or overwhelming, but it was thoughtful in a way that made his heart ache in a strange, unfamiliar way.
Slowly, he lifted his head and looked at Shen Yu again.
For the past few days... Shen Yu had been like this.
Quietly attentive.
Consistently present.
He had hugged Jiang Li when everything felt like it was falling apart. He had stayed with him when he couldn’t even step into a hospital because of his trauma. He had never forced him to explain, never pushed him into discomfort, never made him feel like he was a burden.
He had simply stayed.
How had Jiang Li not seen it sooner?
Lost in those thoughts, Jiang Li didn’t realize how long he had been staring.
"Is there something wrong... Jiang Li?"
Shen Yu’s voice broke through the silence, calm but carrying a subtle note of concern.
He didn’t turn his head, his eyes still on the road, but the question lingered between them.
Jiang Li swallowed softly, his throat suddenly feeling tight.
"Shen... Yu..." he called quietly.
The way he said it was different.
Soft.
Heavy.
Filled with something that couldn’t be easily explained.
Shen Yu’s grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly.
"Please... stop the car," Jiang Li whispered.
This time, Shen Yu reacted immediately.
He didn’t question it. He didn’t hesitate.
The road ahead was quiet, and within moments, he slowed the car and pulled over to the side. The tires crunched lightly against the gravel as the car came to a stop, the engine settling into a low idle.
As soon as the car was still, Shen Yu turned toward him.
"What’s wrong—"
He didn’t get to finish.
Jiang Li moved first.
In one quick motion, he unbuckled his seatbelt and leaned forward, his arms wrapping tightly around Shen Yu as if he were afraid of losing him. He climbed onto his lap without hesitation, his body pressing close, his warmth immediate and undeniable.
For a brief second, Shen Yu froze.
Jiang Li didn’t think about what he was doing.
He didn’t analyze it.
He didn’t question it.
He simply followed the overwhelming rush of emotion inside him.
His chest felt too full, his heart pounding too loudly, his thoughts too tangled to make sense of anything. All he knew was that he needed to be close.
Needed to hold on.
His eyes stung slightly, tears gathering at the edges, but they weren’t painful.
They were warm.
Certain.
"I love you, Shen Yu," Jiang Li said softly.
The words came out naturally, without hesitation, as if they had always belonged to him.
He lifted his head, his gaze meeting Shen Yu’s.
Those dark eyes were different now—deeper, heavier, filled with something intense that made Jiang Li’s breath catch.
But for the first time...
He didn’t feel afraid.
Instead, a strange warmth spread through him, sending a faint shiver down his spine.
He didn’t realize the way he looked.
Didn’t realize how open his expression was.
How his honey-brown eyes reflected everything he felt so clearly, without restraint.
"Jiang Li... stop looking at me like that..." Shen Yu muttered.
His voice had dropped, lower and rougher than before, carrying a quiet tension beneath it.
But Jiang Li didn’t pull away.
Instead, he tilted his head slightly, leaning closer.
His breath brushed softly against Shen Yu’s skin, warm and unsteady.
"I just can’t take my eyes off you... Shen Yu," he whispered.
There was no embarrassment in his voice.
No hesitation.
Only honesty.
"I just can’t..."
The words lingered in the small space between them, soft yet unwavering.
Neither of them moved.
Not because they couldn’t.
But because, in that moment, neither of them wanted to.
The world outside the car continued on, distant and irrelevant, while inside, everything felt suspended in a quiet stillness that belonged only to them.
For Shen Yu, it was unfamiliar.
Uncertain.
And yet... not something he wanted to push away.
And for Jiang Li...
It felt like something he had been searching for without even realizing it.
Something fragile.
Something real.
Something he wanted to hold onto for as long as he possibly could.
