Chapter 76

At those softly spoken words, Shen Yu smiled as he looked down at the omega in his arms. There was something gentle in his expression, something rare that only seemed to surface around Jiang Li.
"Then let me help you," he murmured quietly.
Before Jiang Li could react, Shen Yu lifted his hand and gently covered the omega’s eyes. The sudden darkness made Jiang Li subconsciously pout, his lips pressing together in a small, confused expression as he leaned slightly into Shen Yu’s touch.
"Is there anything wrong?" Shen Yu asked, his voice calm and patient. "What made you want me to stop the car? Were you feeling carsick, or was the sweetness from the cake too much?"
Jiang Li bit his lower lip, his hands still holding onto Shen Yu as if letting go would make everything disappear.
"I just felt overwhelmed," he admitted softly. "All my feelings rushed into my heart at once... it made me want to hug you."
As he spoke, his arms tightened even more around Shen Yu’s waist, holding him with quiet desperation, as though he needed reassurance that this moment was real.
They were still parked at the side of the road, the night settling deeper around them. It was already eight in the evening, and the streets were quieter now, with only the occasional passing car breaking the silence. Shen Yu glanced at the time briefly before looking back at Jiang Li, who was still clinging to him.
The omega looked so small like this, so soft and unguarded, and for a moment, Shen Yu found himself reluctant to move.
But reality still lingered at the edge of his thoughts. He had work the next day, and the long evening was starting to weigh on him. More importantly, Jiang Li needed rest.
With a quiet sigh, Shen Yu gently pried Jiang Li’s arms away, careful not to be rough. He guided him back into the passenger seat and fastened the seatbelt securely across his chest.
Jiang Li blinked, clearly caught off guard by the sudden shift. He watched Shen Yu return to his seat and start the car again without saying anything, and a faint pout formed on his lips.
He had expected... something more.
But Shen Yu remained silent.
The car moved smoothly onto the highway, the low hum of the engine blending with the soft rhythm of the road beneath them. Not long after, the quiet was joined by another sound—the gentle tapping of rain against the windows.
It was unusual for it to rain during winter, but tonight the sky had decided otherwise.
Jiang Li turned his head toward the window, watching silently as raindrops slid down the glass, illuminated by the passing headlights of other cars. The lights stretched and blurred through the water, creating a soft, almost dreamlike view that held his attention.
He lifted the bottle of milk and took a small sip.
The cool liquid contrasted sharply with the lingering sweetness of the cake, spreading through him with a refreshing clarity. The coldness made him shiver slightly, but it also eased the heaviness in his chest.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Ten minutes passed like that, quiet and steady, until the car finally slowed and came to a stop. Jiang Li glanced outside and realized they had arrived at the hotel—the one where Shen Yu’s penthouse was located.
The familiar sight made something in him settle.
Shen Yu turned off the engine and let out a soft breath before turning to Jiang Li.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
Jiang Li, who had been staring at the rain moments ago, turned back to him.
"I... I’m..." he began, stumbling over his words.
Shen Yu raised an eyebrow slightly, waiting.
Seeing that look, Jiang Li quickly shook his head.
"I’m alright. The cake already made me full," he said, trying to sound certain.
Shen Yu studied him for a brief moment before nodding.
"Is that so," he murmured.
The sound of the car door opening broke the quiet. Jiang Li quickly unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped out as well, following Shen Yu without a word.
Shen Yu walked ahead of him, his hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers. His long black coat reached down to his knees, moving slightly with each step. Under the dim lights, he looked composed and distant, like someone entirely out of Jiang Li’s reach.
Like a successful man who belonged somewhere far above him.
Jiang Li slowed slightly as he walked behind him, his gaze lingering.
And what about him?
He was just... Jiang Li.
That thought made his chest tighten, a faint sadness creeping in.
But before it could take root, another thought surfaced, soft but persistent.
That successful man likes you.
The sudden contradiction made Jiang Li pause for a second.
Then, unexpectedly, he giggled.
The sound slipped out of him before he could stop it, light and unguarded. He covered his mouth quickly, his face turning slightly to the side as he tried to suppress it.
He didn’t notice the way Shen Yu’s lips curved faintly in amusement as he glanced back.
After they reached the penthouse, Shen Yu asked if Jiang Li wanted to take a warm bath. Jiang Li nodded immediately, the lingering chill from outside still clinging to him.
By the time he finished bathing, the tension in his body had eased significantly.
He sat comfortably in the living room, wrapped in soft warmth, holding a cup of hot chocolate in his hands. The familiar scent of Shen Yu’s apartment surrounded him, subtle yet comforting, and he found himself relaxing without effort.
Whenever he was here, it felt... safe.
Like home.
He absentmindedly watched his favorite drama playing on the television, though his thoughts drifted in and out, never fully focused.
"Do you want rice cakes, Jiang Li?"
Shen Yu’s voice pulled him back.
Jiang Li turned his head and saw Shen Yu standing nearby, holding a bowl of noodles in one hand and a plate of neatly arranged white rice cakes in the other.
His eyes immediately landed on the rice cakes.
They looked soft, slightly glossy, and perfectly made.
"...Yes," Jiang Li replied, though there was a hint of hesitation in his voice.
He had just said he wasn’t hungry.
Still, when he picked one up and took a bite, his expression changed instantly.
His eyes widened.
They were incredibly good.
The texture was perfect, soft yet slightly chewy, and the sweetness was balanced just right—not overwhelming like the cake earlier.
"Did you make this?" Jiang Li asked, his voice filled with genuine surprise. "How are they so good?"
Shen Yu let out a small chuckle at his reaction.
"I didn’t. Lin Yushen did," he replied casually.
Jiang Li’s expression shifted immediately.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"Who is that?" he asked.
Shen Yu didn’t answer right away. Instead, he calmly began eating his noodles, clearly aware of Jiang Li’s reaction.
The way Jiang Li’s brows furrowed, the slight tension in his expression—it was unexpectedly adorable.
Shen Yu found himself wanting to see that expression a little longer.
Jiang Li, on the other hand, felt something strange stir inside him.
The rice cakes were still delicious, but somehow, they didn’t taste quite the same anymore.
A faint bitterness lingered beneath the sweetness.
Still, that didn’t stop him from taking another bite.
"Shen Yu... who is that?" he asked again, unable to hide the curiosity in his voice.
But it wasn’t just curiosity.
It was something sharper.
Something closer to jealousy.
Who was this person... that could make something for Shen Yu?
Seeing that Jiang Li was starting to genuinely worry, Shen Yu finally turned to him.
"He’s my coworker," he said. "And my friend."
He spoke simply, as if it wasn’t a big deal at all.
"Your friend..." Jiang Li repeated cautiously.
Shen Yu couldn’t help but smile.
It was hard to believe this was the same bold, teasing omega he had first met. Right now, Jiang Li looked completely different—soft, uncertain, almost fragile in his emotions.
And yet, it was all still him.
Every version of him.
"Mn. My friend," Shen Yu confirmed.
He reached for his phone and unlocked it, pulling up a photo that Lin Yushen had insisted on taking.
He handed it to Jiang Li.
Jiang Li looked down at the screen.
In the picture, there were three figures—Shen Yu, another man, and a small figure beside them holding a carrot toy.
Jiang Li’s gaze lingered on the man next to Shen Yu for a moment.
Then it shifted.
His attention fell on the child.
Almost unconsciously, his hand moved to his stomach.
Shen Yu noticed immediately.
He gently covered Jiang Li’s smaller hand with his own, his touch warm and steady.
"That’s what I feel too," Shen Yu said quietly, his gaze softening. "Whenever I see Xiao Yu."
Jiang Li looked up at him.
"Does your heart race?" Shen Yu continued. "Do you imagine our little Beanie when you look at him?"
His voice grew softer, more thoughtful.
"That’s exactly what I feel."
There was a pause.
Then, almost like a confession, he added, "I can’t wait to hold him. I can’t wait to hold our little Beanie, Jiang Li."
Jiang Li’s eyes filled with tears.
Not from sadness.
But from something deeper.
He had never felt this understood before.
Never felt this... seen.
All the doubts he had been carrying, all the quiet fears that Shen Yu didn’t want this child, that he didn’t feel the same—everything began to fade.
Without thinking, Jiang Li leaned forward and hugged him tightly.
"Me too... Shen Yu," he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "I really want to hold him."
For the first time since learning about Beanie, Jiang Li no longer felt as though he was carrying the child alone.
