Chapter 77

"Ah... is that Jiang Li...?"
The question was spoken so suddenly that the brown-haired omega sitting quietly by the restaurant window froze. She had been staring outside without much thought, her fingers loosely wrapped around the warm teacup resting before her, when those words pulled her attention away.
Her head turned almost immediately.
Through the wide glass wall of the restaurant, beyond the reflection of the warm lights inside, she saw a familiar figure.
Xiao Ye’s breath caught.
Her honey-brown eyes widened as she stared through the glass, almost afraid that if she blinked, the person standing on the other side would disappear.
"Jiang Li..."
The name left her lips like a whisper.
It was really him.
Her son.
For years, she had wondered where he had gone. After he finished high school, Jiang Li had disappeared without taking much with him. He had left with almost nothing except the necklace she had given him, and after that, there had been no news that could truly reassure her that he was safe.
There had been nights when Xiao Ye couldn’t sleep.
She had imagined the worst possible things.
She had imagined him sick, alone, hungry, or perhaps somewhere he didn’t want to be. She had wondered whether he hated her for not being able to protect him, whether he had forgotten her, or whether he had simply decided that his old life was something he never wanted to return to.
Yet now, there he was.
Standing beneath the soft winter light and laughing.
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
Jiang Li looked different.
He was fuller than she remembered, his body no longer carrying the thin, fragile appearance of the boy who had once walked away from home. His blond hair caught the light beautifully, each strand glowing beneath the restaurant’s warm illumination.
He finally got blond hair...
Xiao Ye thought, staring at him with a trembling smile.
She remembered how much Jiang Li had wanted blond hair when he was younger. He had talked about it countless times, but there had always been something stopping him. Seeing it now made her chest ache with a strange mixture of happiness and regret.
He looked healthy.
More importantly, he looked happy.
She couldn’t hear his laughter through the glass, but she could see the way his shoulders moved and the way his eyes curved whenever he smiled. Then another figure entered her line of sight.
A tall man.
An Alpha.
Xiao Ye watched as the man approached Jiang Li and, with an ease that suggested familiarity, flicked his forehead.
Jiang Li immediately pouted.
Xiao Ye’s lips parted in surprise before a soft smile slowly appeared.
Ah...
Her little Xiao Li was really happy.
The countless sleepless nights suddenly felt less frightening.
Her baby was okay.
He had grown up.
He had found someone.
She lowered her gaze briefly, wiping the corner of her eye with her finger before looking back through the glass.
The peaceful warmth inside her chest didn’t last long.
"Oh, that’s why that bastard ran away without coming back," Jiang Chenyan said beside her, his gaze following the same direction. "He got himself a rich Alpha."
Xiao Ye froze.
Her fingers tightened around the teacup.
"Bastard...?"
A quiet, deep voice suddenly came from behind them.
Both of them turned.
Jiang Ze stood there, one hand resting casually against the back of a chair. There was a faint smile on his lips, but his dark eyes were fixed on his father.
"Who’s the bastard?" he asked.
Xiao Ye’s face immediately paled.
Her eyes darted toward her husband, silently begging him not to say anything.
Jiang Chenyan noticed the pleading expression in her honey-brown eyes. Despite their considerable age difference, Xiao Ye remained beautiful even without makeup, and when she looked at him like that, there was something almost vulnerable in her expression.
He sighed.
"That’s none of your concern," he said before lifting his teacup and taking another drink.
Jiang Ze merely chuckled.
His gaze shifted toward the glass wall.
Through it, he could still see Jiang Li, although the distance and reflections made his figure increasingly difficult to distinguish.
Really, Dad?
I think it concerns me more than you think.
Jiang Ze pulled out a chair and sat beside his father. His dark eyes remained fixed on the fading silhouette outside.
His father hadn’t gone after Jiang Li.
He hadn’t even shown any intention of doing so.
Because he simply didn’t care.
Xiao Ye was different.
She couldn’t go after him either, but not because she didn’t want to.
She had only just discovered that her son was alive, healthy, and apparently happy. She couldn’t bring herself to drag him back into the life he had escaped from.
Not now.
Not after finally seeing that smile.
Xiao Ye lowered her gaze toward her dessert, her eyes becoming glassy again.
Jiang Ze noticed.
He didn’t say anything.
Instead, he reached for his phone.
There were some things people could forget.
There were some wounds people could pretend had healed.
But Jiang Ze couldn’t.
He hadn’t forgotten the omega who had left him with his gland broken. He hadn’t forgotten the humiliation, the pain, or the years it had taken him to become someone who could stand normally without thinking about what had happened.
How could someone simply heal and move on after something like that?
His phone vibrated.
A notification appeared across the screen.
[I found him... and I’m currently staying at the same apartment as him.]
Jiang Ze stared at the message for several seconds.
Then, slowly, a smile curved his lips.
His head tilted slightly before he typed a short response.
[Good.]
As the saying went, an eye for an eye.
......
Time passed quietly.
The relationship between Jiang Li and Shen Yu gradually changed until being beside one another no longer felt unusual. The small things became routine—the way Shen Yu remembered what Jiang Li liked, the way Jiang Li instinctively searched for him whenever he entered a room, and the quiet comfort that settled between them whenever neither of them felt the need to speak.
Jiang Li’s heart warmed whenever he thought about it.
They were shopping together now, although Shen Yu had made it very clear that they had come for one specific purpose.
A gift for Shen Mei.
Yet Jiang Li had somehow become distracted.
He stood in front of a display case, staring at the price tag of a necklace.
At least, he appeared to be staring at the price tag.
In reality, he had become completely dazed.
The diamond necklace resting inside the glass case was beautiful. Its delicate chain caught the light from above, while the pendant reflected tiny fragments of brightness across the display.
Shen Yu checked the time on his phone.
His lips pressed into a thin line.
Today, he didn’t have enough time to stand there and watch Jiang Li stare at a price tag for the entire day.
He walked over and stopped beside him.
"What are you looking at?"
Jiang Li didn’t answer immediately.
Shen Yu followed his gaze.
A diamond necklace.
His dark eyes shifted toward Jiang Li.
"I didn’t know you liked jewelry," Shen Yu said softly.
His voice finally broke Jiang Li out of his daze.
The omega blinked and looked at him.
"I’m not actually a big fan," he admitted.
Shen Yu nodded.
He couldn’t remember ever seeing Jiang Li wear much jewelry. Most of the time, the omega appeared in baggy shorts and a T-shirt. If he wasn’t wearing those, he was usually dressed in sweatpants and an oversized hoodie.
Comfort always seemed to win over fashion.
Shen Yu looked back at the necklace.
Then he looked at Jiang Li again.
Without saying anything, he reached toward the display and took the necklace from its box.
Jiang Li’s eyes widened.
Before he could ask what Shen Yu was doing, Shen Yu stepped behind him.
The omega immediately became aware of the Alpha standing so close behind him.
He bit his lower lip.
He knew Shen Yu didn’t like unnecessary questions, and somehow, the obvious question sitting on the tip of his tongue felt too embarrassing to ask.
The cold weight of the necklace suddenly touched his skin.
Jiang Li shivered.
"Shen Yu..."
"Mn."
Shen Yu’s fingers worked carefully with the clasp. Once the necklace was secured, his hand lingered briefly against Jiang Li’s milky-white neck.
Jiang Li swallowed.
"It’s too pricey."
A grin appeared on Shen Yu’s lips.
His arms slipped around Jiang Li’s waist, pulling him gently backward until his body rested against the Alpha’s chest.
"Are you doubting a prosecutor’s bank account?"
Jiang Li’s cheeks immediately flushed.
"We only came here to buy Shen Mei’s gift," he protested, turning slightly to look at him.
Shen Yu nodded and pointed toward a navy-blue box resting on the table.
"I already bought it."
Jiang Li looked at the box.
Shen Yu had already taken care of everything.
What he both loved and hated about his sister was that she wasn’t difficult to shop for. Shen Mei could provide a list containing a hundred different things she wanted, which made buying presents easy, but somehow she still expected Shen Yu to know exactly which one she would like most.
She considered her brother her balance.
Jiang Li smiled faintly.
"Is Shen Mei’s birthday today or tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow."
Jiang Li’s eyes widened.
"Wow. What a good birthday. At the start of a new year, you get to start a new age."
Shen Yu’s gaze shifted toward the date displayed on his phone.
31 December, 20XX.
The final day of the year.
Tomorrow, the calendar would turn.
And Shen Mei would begin another year of her life.
Jiang Li stared at the date for a moment before smiling.
For some reason, standing beside Shen Yu on the final night of the year made his chest feel strangely warm.
A year was ending.
And perhaps, without realizing it, another part of his life was beginning.
