Chapter 78

"Oh—"
Shen Mei’s voice trailed off as she stared at the opened box in front of her. Her dark brown eyes widened with genuine surprise as she looked down at the beautiful set of jewelry nestled carefully inside. The necklace, earrings, and matching bracelet were all part of the same collection, each piece decorated with delicate diamonds that caught the light whenever she moved.
For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then her mouth slowly fell open.
"Shen Yu, you shouldn’t have!"
Her expression was so exaggerated that Shen Yu immediately raised one eyebrow. He stared at his younger sister with the same unreadable expression he usually wore, watching as she carefully reached out and touched the diamonds on the necklace with one finger.
The moment her fingertip brushed against the cold stone, a grin spread across her face.
"Ah, I’m joking! You absolutely should have!" she exclaimed, her voice rising with excitement. "Like—ahhh! I’m going to post this so badly!"
She immediately grabbed her phone, practically bouncing in place as she hurried to take pictures of the jewelry from every possible angle.
Shen Yu shook his head slightly.
He had expected this reaction.
Beside him, Jiang Li let out a quiet chuckle.
The sound immediately caught Shen Yu’s attention. He turned his head and looked at the omega standing beside him, one eyebrow lifting curiously.
"What’s got you smiling?" he asked.
Jiang Li looked up at him.
There was a softness in his honey-brown eyes that Shen Yu had become increasingly familiar with. He glanced briefly toward Shen Mei, who was still happily photographing the jewelry, before lowering his gaze again.
"It’s just..." Jiang Li began quietly. "She looks so happy. It’s amazing to watch. I don’t have to guess how you feel."
Shen Yu stared at him for a moment.
Jiang Li immediately looked away.
He still wasn’t completely accustomed to the way Shen Yu looked at him now. There had been a time when those dark eyes had made him nervous, when he had desperately tried to understand what was hidden behind them. Now, however, there was something warmer in them whenever they settled on him, and somehow that was even harder to endure.
"Mn," Shen Yu said softly. "That’s right."
He sighed before reaching over and gently patting Jiang Li’s head.
"Because you know the feeling, then stop asking me why I buy the same things for you."
Jiang Li’s eyes widened.
He slowly lifted his head.
The words were simple, but they struck him harder than Shen Yu probably realized. The familiar scent of whiskey and rosewood surrounded him, warm and intoxicating, while Shen Yu’s dark eyes held a softness Jiang Li had once believed he would never receive.
For a moment, it became too much.
Jiang Li stepped closer and instinctively grabbed the front of Shen Yu’s black mock-neck sweater. His fingers curled tightly into the fabric, holding onto him as though the Alpha might disappear if he let go.
Shen Yu looked down.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly.
Jiang Li nodded, but his fingers remained tightly curled around the sweater.
"I’m just overwhelmed," he whispered.
Shen Yu frowned slightly.
Then he remembered.
Jiang Li had told him before that he sometimes became overwhelmed by his emotions, so much so that he had once asked Shen Yu to stop the car simply because he needed to hold him.
Understanding dawned quietly in his eyes.
Shen Yu sighed before wrapping his arms around the smaller omega.
"It’s okay," he whispered near Jiang Li’s ear.
His voice was low and reassuring, and the words immediately made Jiang Li relax against him.
Neither of them noticed Shen Mei watching them.
She stood there with her phone still in her hand, her eyes moving between the two men. Then her lips slowly curved upward.
So they really were dating.
Shen Mei had suspected it, of course, but seeing it with her own eyes was completely different.
Jiang Li lifted his honey-brown eyes toward Shen Yu, and the expression on his face was filled with such open adoration that Shen Mei almost felt like she was intruding on something private.
She smiled.
Cute.
She had expected Shen Yu to look exactly the same as always—cold, distant, unreadable, as though nothing in the world could possibly affect him.
But he didn’t.
Shen Mei nearly dropped her phone.
The dark eyes she had spent most of her life seeing as emotionless were looking at Jiang Li with a warmth she had almost never seen before.
She stared for several seconds in complete disbelief.
She had known that face for most of her life. She knew every version of her brother’s silence, every variation of his usual indifference. But she had never seen him look at anyone like this.
"Oh, wow," she finally said, lifting her phone again with a mischievous grin. "I think I should stop taking pictures of my gifts and start taking pictures of you two."
Jiang Li immediately realized what she meant.
His cheeks flushed bright red, and he gently pushed Shen Yu away before lowering his head.
Shen Yu merely rolled his eyes.
He looked toward the collection of gifts surrounding Shen Mei and noticed just how many there were. His brows drew together slightly.
"Shouldn’t your friends give you their gifts tomorrow?" he asked.
Shen Mei’s smile faltered.
"Uhh..."
She avoided his gaze and continued taking pictures of the limited-edition bags, watches, jewelry, and other expensive gifts scattered around her.
Shen Yu stared at the collection.
There was no way these were ordinary gifts.
His expression became slightly more serious.
"Was it Teahyun who gave you all of this?" he asked. "Or He Lian?"
Shen Mei rolled her eyes so dramatically that she nearly gave herself a headache.
"Why would I accept gifts from that snitch? He’s the reason Dad has been taking double looks at me lately."
She paused when she remembered that Teahyun was Shen Yu’s friend and offered him a weak, awkward smile.
Shen Yu noticed.
"Mn. I see."
His tone made it clear he had no intention of discussing Teahyun any further.
"Then who got you all of this?"
Shen Mei hesitated.
She sighed softly.
"My fiancé."
Both Shen Yu and Jiang Li froze.
"Fiancé?" Shen Yu repeated.
His expression changed instantly.
His dark eyes sharpened.
"Who’s that? Were you already dating him?"
Shen Mei chuckled awkwardly and immediately pretended to be very interested in photographing one of her bracelets.
"No..."
She paused.
"But I’m happy. Look at what he bought me!"
She held up the jewelry proudly.
Shen Yu wasn’t amused.
He knew his sister better than almost anyone.
Shen Mei had never wanted to marry young. She had always been determined to finish her studies first, and she had repeatedly said that she didn’t want marriage interfering with her education or future.
Yet now she was standing in front of him, casually announcing that she had a fiancé.
Shen Yu slowly brushed his hair back.
A dark, almost humorless chuckle escaped him.
"Since when?"
Shen Mei’s smile became smaller.
"Ah... I think last month."
The moment she saw Shen Yu’s eyes darken, she immediately raised both hands.
"I didn’t want to tell you!" she rushed out. "You were really busy. Every time I came to see you, you were either depressed or buried in work. I couldn’t find the right time to tell you."
Shen Yu stared at her.
His jaw tightened slightly.
"Who is he?"
His voice was quieter now, but somehow that made the question more serious.
Shen Mei smiled faintly.
"Xu Tianlong."
Shen Yu froze.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then something seemed to click into place.
His eyes widened.
"That sick bastard."
He turned immediately, but Shen Mei caught his arm before he could take another step.
"Brother!"
She held onto him tightly, her eyes squeezed shut.
"Don’t!"
Shen Yu looked down at her.
"At first, I didn’t want to," Shen Mei said, her voice becoming smaller. "But... I kind of like him now."
Shen Yu’s expression remained hard.
"He has been there for me," she continued. "He supports me. He even said he’ll let me finish my degree before anything else. Shen Yu, please."
Her voice trembled.
Shen Yu’s jaw clenched.
He stared at his sister for a long moment, searching her expression carefully. He wanted to find hesitation. He wanted to find fear. He wanted to find any sign that she was lying to herself.
But all he found were tears gathering in her eyes.
Shen Yu took a slow, shaky breath and stepped back.
"I hope you’re not lying," he said quietly.
His voice softened despite himself.
"Shen Mei, I don’t want to see you trapped in a hopeless arranged marriage like Mother was. Mei... promise me you really like him."
Shen Mei looked at him for several seconds.
Then she nodded.
A tear finally slipped down her cheek, but she was smiling.
"I like him."
Jiang Li had remained quiet throughout the entire conversation.
He stood slightly behind Shen Yu, listening as the siblings spoke. His fingers were wrapped tightly around his phone, and his gaze remained lowered as he thought about everything Shen Mei had said.
He couldn’t help thinking about the person who had once loved her.
Someone who had been there long before Xu Tianlong.
Someone whose feelings had never truly disappeared.
Jiang Li slowly lowered his eyes.
Poor Luo Xin...
