Chapter 79
.
.
He Lian had been standing there for several minutes, watching her husband sit quietly on the couch with a glass of whiskey resting between his fingers. The fire in the fireplace crackled softly, its warm glow reflecting across the room and casting shifting shadows over Teahyun’s face. Usually, the sight of him sitting so comfortably with that familiar glass in hand would have made her smile, but tonight something about him felt different.
"What are you doing...?" she finally asked, breaking the silence.
Teahyun didn’t answer immediately. He took another slow sip of his whiskey, his gaze remaining fixed on the flames dancing behind the glass of the fireplace. There was no playful smile on his lips, no teasing glint in his eyes, and none of the careless amusement that most people associated with him.
After a moment, he turned his head slightly, looking at He Lian from the corner of his eye.
"Why are you dressed like that? Is there somewhere you were going?" he asked.
His voice was calm, but it lacked its usual playfulness.
He Lian blinked in confusion. "Huh? But shouldn’t we go to... I thought we had to—"
She didn’t finish.
Teahyun gave a quiet hum, interrupting her without raising his voice.
"Come here."
The simple command made He Lian swallow. She hesitated for only a second before nodding and walking toward him. She slowly sat beside her husband, carefully smoothing down her clothes as she settled against the couch.
Teahyun turned toward her.
His hand lifted, and with surprising gentleness, he brushed a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. His dark eyes remained fixed on her face, studying her quietly.
"Why didn’t you tell me that today was your mother’s birthday?" he asked.
He Lian’s fingers tightened around the fabric of her clothes.
"All these years, you’ve always gone to my family’s gatherings, but you never once said anything about your own family, Lian. Why is that?"
He Lian lowered her gaze.
"I didn’t want to be an inconvenience," she whispered.
For a moment, Teahyun simply stared at her.
Then his expression softened.
He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead.
"You’re never an inconvenience when it comes to me."
He Lian’s eyes immediately became glossy.
"Where’s Teamin?" Teahyun asked.
"Oh, he’s sleeping," she answered.
She looked back at him, her fingers unconsciously gripping his sweatpants. Even after all these years together, her heart still reacted to him as easily as it had when they first met. A simple touch from him could make her chest flutter, and hearing him reassure her could make all the worries she carried feel lighter.
"Tell Lu to take you and Teamin to your parents’ house."
Her eyes widened.
"Really?"
Teahyun nodded.
"Go see your mother."
The tears that had gathered in He Lian’s eyes finally spilled over. She leaned forward and hugged him tightly, burying her face against his chest.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Teahyun wrapped one arm around her and patted her back before she eventually pulled away. He watched her rush upstairs, calling softly for Teamin as she went.
Several hours later, the house was quiet again.
The front door had closed behind He Lian and Teamin, leaving Teahyun alone in the spacious living room. He remained seated on the couch, his gaze returning to the fireplace.
The warmth from the flames illuminated his face, but it did little to soften the darkness settling in his eyes.
"If only you were this sincere..." he murmured.
His fingers tightened around the whiskey glass.
"Then I wouldn’t have had to work this hard."
He placed the glass down with more force than necessary, the sharp sound echoing through the quiet room. He leaned back and brushed his hair away from his forehead, his expression becoming colder.
A moment later, footsteps sounded against the marble floor.
Teahyun turned his head.
A man appeared at the entrance to the living room. He immediately stopped several feet away and bowed respectfully.
"Mr. Kim."
Teahyun raised a brow.
"What is it this time?"
He stood from the couch and reached for a cigarette. After lighting it, he took a slow drag, allowing the smoke to curl around his face before exhaling.
The man remained standing in front of him.
"Mr. Kim, there was another attempted kidnapping."
Teahyun’s eyes narrowed.
"The tenth time this month?"
"Yes."
Teahyun released a long, irritated breath.
"Those damned cockroaches."
He looked toward the man.
"Did someone leak the omega’s secondary gender or something? I’m getting tired of this."
The man hesitated before handing him several photographs.
Teahyun took them.
His gaze moved over the first picture.
A man dressed entirely in black stood near the entrance of an apartment building, his body positioned casually against the door as though he had been waiting for someone. The photograph had clearly been taken from a distance.
Teahyun studied it silently before taking another drag from his cigarette.
"When did this happen?"
"After their fight," the man replied.
Teahyun looked up.
"The fight you created," the man added carefully.
For a moment, silence filled the room.
Then Teahyun grinned.
His tiger teeth became visible as his expression twisted into something that looked almost amused.
"But the kidnapper couldn’t capture Jiang Li because the omega was already with the Alpha."
"Yes."
"They’re together now, right?"
"Yes, Mr. Kim."
Teahyun’s smile widened.
"And they can’t seem to be separated because Shen Yu always takes the omega’s side."
His eyes brightened with interest.
"Did you show Shen Yu that the omega was the reason for his manifestation?"
"I did. I used Doctor Norman, as you instructed."
"And?"
"Mr. Shen still took the omega’s side."
Teahyun stared at him for a moment.
Then he laughed softly.
"Interesting."
He walked toward the fireplace, the cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers.
"But I can’t help them if they stay together."
The man’s expression tightened.
"What am I supposed to do now, Mr. Kim?"
Teahyun stopped.
He slowly turned around.
His expression had changed completely.
"The omega."
The room seemed to grow colder.
"Make sure he’s alone."
The man listened carefully.
"But it has to look like a coincidence. I don’t want Shen Yu suspecting anything. Make sure the kidnapper sees the opportunity and takes the omega."
"Yes."
Teahyun took another drag from his cigarette before continuing.
"One more thing."
The man waited.
"I want you to put a tracker on something."
"A tracker?"
"Something like jewelry."
Teahyun tapped his finger thoughtfully against the rim of his whiskey glass.
"Make sure it’s something the omega can’t resist. Something he would willingly wear."
The man frowned slightly.
"But why would they—"
"Shen Mei’s birthday is in two days."
The interruption was immediate.
Teahyun’s grin returned.
"And surely the first thing that would come into Shen Yu’s mind is buying his precious sister jewelry."
His eyes narrowed dangerously.
"They’ll go to a store. That is where you’ll arrange it."
He leaned back against the couch, completely confident in the plan he had created.
"Don’t mess this up."
The man lowered his head.
"Yes, Mr. Kim."
Teahyun’s smile slowly widened.
"After they kidnap him, I can finally take care of the mastermind."
He flicked the ash from his cigarette.
"I’m tired of playing with rats."
His eyes gleamed.
"I want the cat now."
He yawned lazily and stretched his arms before turning away.
"Make it quick, Jun. I’m tired."
He waved his hand dismissively, signaling for the man to leave.
Jun remained where he stood for several seconds.
His gray eyes widened slightly.
He had worked for Teahyun long enough to understand how dangerous his employer could be, but even now, there were moments when his actions left Jun wondering whether Master Shen was incredibly unlucky or simply cursed.
How could someone know another person so well?
Teahyun knew Shen Yu’s habits, his weaknesses, his anger, his happiness, the things that comforted him and the things that broke him. It was almost as if he had spent years studying the man so closely that he had learned how to live inside his skin.
Jun lowered his head before finally turning and leaving.
Teahyun, meanwhile, walked upstairs.
He entered his private office and closed the door behind him.
The room was dimly lit, with only a desk lamp illuminating the large puzzle board resting against the wall. He walked toward it and stood there silently, studying the scattered pieces.
His mind wandered.
He remembered Shen Yu crying.
He remembered Shen Yu’s anger.
His smiles.
His silence.
And most of all, he remembered the depression that had once consumed him.
Every memory had been carefully preserved somewhere deep inside Teahyun’s mind.
He remembered when they were younger, back when Shen Yu had first looked at him with those widened eyes after they met.
There had been something about that expression that had amused him.
At the time, Teahyun had found the world unbearably dull.
Everything felt repetitive.
Predictable.
Meaningless.
But Shen Yu had been different.
Shen Yu had been interesting.
He had brought something into Teahyun’s otherwise monotonous world that no one else could.
Even now, after all those years, that amusement remained.
Teahyun’s eyes slowly brightened.
An eye for an eye.
That was how he saw everything.
Shen Yu was the only person who had ever made this boring world slightly more interesting.
And because of that, Teahyun believed Shen Yu deserved a reward.
He would keep Shen Yu’s happiness safe.
Even if Shen Yu never asked him to.
Even if Shen Yu hated him for it.
Because, in Teahyun’s mind, Shen Yu’s happiness was currently the omega.
Jiang Li.
Teahyun’s gaze shifted toward the small photograph resting on his desk.
Jiang Li was staring upward in the picture, his honey-brown eyes slightly widened, his expression almost innocent.
Teahyun picked up the photograph and studied it carefully.
His head tilted slightly.
A quiet smile appeared on his lips.
"Checkmate..."
The word left his mouth softly.
And beneath the dim light of the office, his smile widened.
