January First
Sadly, Shen Yu had work the next morning, and the realization that they would have to part ways made Jiang Li feel like crying. The night had already become something he never wanted to end, and the thought of returning to his empty apartment without Shen Yu beside him made his chest feel strangely hollow. Still, Shen Yu drove him home, and by the time the car finally stopped outside Jiang Li’s apartment building, the clock had already passed three in the morning.
The streets were almost completely silent at that hour. Most of the windows in the surrounding buildings were dark, and the occasional streetlamp cast a pale glow over the empty road. Jiang Li remained in the passenger seat for a moment, reluctant to leave even though he knew Shen Yu needed to rest before work.
Eventually, he forced himself to open the door.
"Goodnight, Shen Yu," he murmured, his voice soft with reluctance.
Shen Yu looked at him for a moment before nodding. "Go inside and sleep. It’s late."
Jiang Li nodded obediently, and after giving the Alpha one last lingering look, he stepped out of the car.
He had barely managed to get inside his apartment before exhaustion finally caught up with him.
By the time morning came, Jiang Li was still half-asleep when his phone began ringing.
He reached blindly toward the bedside table, his fingers searching for the vibrating device before he finally managed to grab it. His eyes were barely open as he answered.
"Hello...?"
"Hey, Li’er, are you okay?" Luo Xin asked softly.
Her voice carried the cautious concern of someone who already knew what kind of answer she might receive. She had spent years with Jiang Li throughout university, and she knew how difficult Christmas and New Year’s could be for him. Every year, there was always something about the holidays that seemed to pull him deeper into his own thoughts.
That was why her eyebrows immediately lifted when she heard his response.
"Umm... I’m okay."
It wasn’t the words that shocked Luo Xin.
It was his tone.
Jiang Li sounded happy.
Not simply fine, not like someone trying to pretend everything was normal, but genuinely happy. There was a softness in his voice that Luo Xin hadn’t heard from him in a long time, and somehow that made her even more suspicious.
"Did something happen—wait, I’m calling Guo Chen."
"Xin—"
Before Jiang Li could finish, the call ended.
Three seconds later, his phone rang again.
This time, the screen showed that it was a group call.
Jiang Li stared at it sleepily before answering, only to immediately hear the sound of someone chewing loudly.
"Yesss," Guo Chen answered, his voice muffled because he was obviously eating something.
Jiang Li blinked.
Luo Xin immediately ignored Guo Chen’s terrible phone manners.
"Jiang Li, what happened?" she asked again.
Jiang Li was still sleepy from staying awake so late, but the moment he closed his eyes, everything from the previous night returned to him like a fast-forwarding movie. Shen Yu’s confession. His arms around him. Their kiss. The way Shen Yu had finally admitted that he liked him.
The memories were so vivid that Jiang Li could almost feel the warmth of Shen Yu’s hands again.
His fingers tightened around his phone.
His heart began beating faster.
"I..." He bit his lower lip, trying to contain the smile threatening to spread across his face. "I have a boyfriend now."
Silence.
For several seconds, neither Luo Xin nor Guo Chen said anything.
Jiang Li frowned slightly.
"Hello?"
The silence continued.
He was beginning to wonder whether the call had disconnected when suddenly—
"WHAT?!"
Guo Chen’s shout blasted through the speaker.
Jiang Li flinched and immediately pulled the phone away from his ear. He couldn’t help laughing at the sheer volume of the Beta’s reaction.
Luo Xin, however, seemed too shocked to complain about Guo Chen nearly destroying everyone’s eardrums.
"Damn, Li..." she finally said. "Who is it?"
Jiang Li stared at his phone in disbelief.
Wasn’t it obvious?
"Isn’t it obvious...?"
The line went silent again.
Jiang Li slowly narrowed his eyes.
"Oh no..."
He knew exactly what was coming.
He moved the phone away from his ear just in time.
"DAMN, JIANG LI! YOU MANAGED TO SNAG THAT SHEN GUY YOU’VE BEEN STALKING!"
Guo Chen practically screamed the entire sentence.
Jiang Li burst into laughter while, somewhere on Guo Chen’s end of the call, another voice immediately snapped.
"Shut the fuck up, Chen."
There was the unmistakable sound of someone grabbing him, followed by Guo Chen’s startled yelp.
"Guo Xue!" he complained.
"Maybe stop screaming directly into the phone," Guo Xue replied irritably.
"Thanks, Guo Xue," Luo Xin said with a relieved sigh.
Guo Xue hummed in acknowledgment before returning to whatever she had been doing.
"Jiang Li, how did that happen?" she asked.
Jiang Li smiled shyly.
He was about to answer, but before he could get more than a single word out, Luo Xin and Guo Chen began bickering again.
Apparently, Guo Chen’s habit of eating directly beside the phone speaker had finally become too much for Luo Xin.
"Can you stop chewing into the microphone?"
"I’m hungry!"
"You’ve been eating for twenty minutes!"
"Because I’m hungry!"
"You’re always hungry!"
Their argument eventually dragged Guo Xue into it as well, and Jiang Li sat quietly on his bed listening to them fight.
He couldn’t help smiling.
There was something comforting about hearing them argue like this. It made his empty apartment feel slightly less lonely.
"Hehe... you can’t use your pheromones on the call, Xinxin," Guo Chen suddenly teased.
"Chen!"
Jiang Li laughed again.
At this point, there was no chance of him explaining anything.
Finally, Luo Xin released a long sigh.
"Enough. Let’s meet at the mall at ten."
Everyone agreed.
Once the call ended, Jiang Li placed his phone beside him and fell backward onto his bed.
The room became quiet again.
But this time, the silence didn’t feel nearly as lonely.
His gaze wandered toward his phone.
Almost unconsciously, he opened WeChat.
His fingers immediately found Shen Yu’s conversation.
There were only a few messages between them, but Jiang Li stared at them as though they were something precious.
He had a boyfriend.
He, Jiang Li, had a boyfriend.
And his boyfriend wasn’t just anyone.
It was Shen Yu.
The thought alone made his cheeks warm.
He should say good morning.
That was what couples did, right?
Jiang Li quickly typed:
Good morning, Shen Yu.
He stared at the message.
Too plain.
They were dating now.
Should he say something sweeter?
Maybe...
Good morning, babe.
His face immediately turned bright red.
"No!"
He dropped the phone onto the bed and covered his face with both hands.
Why was dating so difficult?
After several minutes of silently arguing with himself, Jiang Li finally picked up his phone again.
He deleted the message.
Typed something else.
Deleted that too.
Finally, after five whole minutes of indecision, he took a deep breath and pressed send.
The moment the message went through, Jiang Li stared at the screen in horror.
It was too embarrassing.
It was too cringe.
He wanted to crawl under his blanket and disappear.
But it was already sent.
There was nothing he could do.
[Good morning, boyfriend.]
Jiang Li buried his face into his pillow.
Meanwhile, Shen Yu was having a completely different kind of morning.
He felt as though his eyes were going to fall out of his head from exhaustion.
After barely sleeping, he had arrived at work with his mind still clouded by everything that had happened the previous night. All he wanted was to lie down somewhere quiet and sleep for several hours.
Instead, he stood in front of the coffee machine with half-lidded eyes, waiting for his coffee to finish.
His phone suddenly vibrated inside his trouser pocket.
Shen Yu reached for it lazily and unlocked the screen.
The moment he saw who the message was from, his tired expression softened.
Jiang Li.
He opened the message.
[Good morning, boyfriend.]
For several seconds, Shen Yu simply stared at the screen.
Then a quiet chuckle escaped him.
The smile that appeared on his face was so subtle that someone who didn’t know him might have missed it entirely.
Unfortunately, the coffee machine had already finished pouring.
A woman standing beside him had noticed.
She had been waiting for her turn and had watched Shen Yu stare at his phone with the same intimidating expression he usually wore at work. She had been too nervous to tell him that his coffee was already full.
But then his dark eyes softened.
His lips curved into a smile.
Her hazel eyes widened.
He looked incredibly handsome.
"Uhh... Prosecutor Shen," she finally managed.
Shen Yu looked toward her.
"Yes?"
She had to stop herself from fangirling.
Deep breaths.
She pointed toward the machine.
"I think your coffee is ready."
Shen Yu glanced at it and realized she was right.
He took the cup, then looked back at her.
"Thank you, Prosecutor Qin."
He walked away while still staring at his phone.
Prosecutor Qin remained standing there for several seconds.
He knew her.
He actually knew her.
A tiny smile slowly appeared on her face as she finally turned toward the coffee machine.
"Hehe..."
Back in his office, Shen Yu placed his coffee down and immediately opened the conversation again.
His fingers moved across the screen.
He wanted to reply.
Something simple.
Something that wouldn’t reveal how much that tiny message had affected him.
Eventually, he typed:
[Good morning, LiLi.]
And sent it.
Across the city, Jiang Li was staring at his phone with the nervousness of someone waiting for exam results.
The moment the notification appeared, his honey-brown eyes widened.
He opened it.
[Good morning, LiLi.]
He froze.
LiLi.
Shen Yu had called him LiLi.
Not Jiang Li.
Not Xiao Li.
LiLi.
His nickname.
His face immediately turned red.
A smile spread across his lips so quickly that his cheeks began to ache.
He felt as though he could scream.
He could float.
He could reach the sky.
He was so happy that he almost wanted to cry.
Then another thought suddenly entered his mind.
If Shen Yu was calling him LiLi now, did that mean he could finally call Shen Yu what he had always secretly wanted to?
His lips curled into a mischievous smile.
Yu-gege...
Or maybe...
Gege.
The thought made him squeal into his pillow.
Jiang Li rolled around on the bed before finally sitting up and beginning to dance in place, completely forgetting that he was supposed to meet Luo Xin and Guo Chen soon.
His cheeks remained flushed, his smile impossible to hide, and beneath the oversized shirt he wore, the small curve of his stomach had become slightly more visible.
His hand eventually drifted down to rest over it.
His smile softened.
He wasn’t alone anymore.
He had Shen Yu.
And soon, he would have their little Beanie too.
For the first time in a long while, the beginning of a new year didn’t feel frightening to Jiang Li.
It felt like the beginning of something beautiful.
