Needless to say, that guy Zheng Lei had a campus belle for a girlfriend and wanted to show her off.
He was calling Yang Hui over for no other reason than to use him as a backdrop. The message was clear: ’You and Lin Yu broke up ages ago, but I’ve managed to stay with my campus belle for six years.’
"I don’t think I’ll go."
He couldn’t just expose Huang Lingyu’s part-time job at the KTV. Zheng Lei would be mortified, and Huang Lingyu would be devastated.
He had no grudge against Huang Lingyu, so of course he wouldn’t put her in such an impossible position.
If he went, Huang Lingyu probably wouldn’t be able to stomach a single bite all night. So, he decided it was best not to get involved.
"Come on, A Hui, you have to be there. I’m heading back right after dinner. You can’t just skip my send-off, can you?"
This guy clearly loved watching drama unfold and had no problem fanning the flames. Yang Hui offered to see him off *after* dinner, but Sun Tao wouldn’t have it.
"A Hui, it’ll be awkward for Huang Lingyu whether you’re there or not, because I’ll be there. So you might as well come. Besides, they might have invited Teacher Chen tonight, too."
’Teacher Chen?’ That was his high school homeroom teacher. ’Why would he be there? I heard he retired this year. Did he move to Qingzhou to settle down?’
Lost in thought about Teacher Chen, he reached for his latte on the table without looking and grabbed the wrong cup.
The small, round table was tiny to begin with, so his cup wasn’t far from the one belonging to the beautiful woman sitting across from him. Still distracted by thoughts of Teacher Chen, he went to take a habitual, tactical sip, reaching out and drinking from the cup.
He tasted a faint sweetness, which didn’t seem right for his latte. Snapping out of his daze, he glanced down.
There was a faint lipstick stain on the rim, and he realized the sweet taste must have been from the lipstick. He looked up, just in time to meet the bewildered gaze of the beautiful woman across from him.
"I am so, so sorry. Let me buy you a new one."
The beautiful woman shook her head. "It’s fine. I was about to leave anyway."
She stood, her form a sleek silhouette detaching from the café’s clamor. Her model-like proportions gave her figure an almost geometric beauty. Baggy jeans hung loosely at her waist, yet cinched tight around her narrow hips and full glutes, tracing the distinct hourglass figure of someone who clearly worked out.
He watched her walk away. The afternoon sun, filtered through the windowpanes, cast a lattice of shadows across her back. The folds of her loose clothing failed to conceal the commanding lines of her athletic build.
His mouth felt dry, so he picked up the cup and took another gulp. Only after setting it down did he realize he’d grabbed her cup *again*.
Just then, Sun Tao’s voice crackled through the phone, "Hey, hello? Why’d you go quiet?"
"Screw you, you just made me look like an idiot. I’ll go tonight. Just send me the location."
’Teacher Chen is going to be there. If he found out I was in Qingzhou but didn’t show up, that would be bad.’
After sitting for a bit longer, Yang Hui received a message from Yang Na. It was the salary and benefits structure for the various positions they had discussed yesterday.
Starting salaries were determined by job rank, and the ranking system itself was clearly defined.
Store Sales Associates were divided into three tiers: Junior Associate, Senior Associate, and Lead Associate, corresponding to ranks P1, P2, and P3.
Store Managers were also divided into three levels: Junior Manager, Senior Manager, and Lead Manager, corresponding to ranks P4, P5, and P6.
The base salary for P1 was 5,000 yuan/month. For ranks P1 through P3, each promotion came with a 500 yuan/month raise. For P4 and above, each promotion came with a 1,000 yuan/month raise.
In other words, a Junior Associate would start with a base salary of 5,000 yuan/month. With good performance and a promotion to P3, that base salary would become 6,000 yuan/month.
A Junior Manager would start at P4 with a base salary of 7,000 yuan/month. If they performed well and were promoted to Lead Manager (P6), their base salary would be 9,000 yuan/month.
For corporate office staff, the job levels were divided into Specialist, Supervisor, Manager, and Director.
Each of these levels was also divided into three tiers: Junior, Senior, and Lead.
The Specialist level corresponded to ranks P7-P9, the Supervisor level to P10-P12, and so on up the ladder.
At the corporate level, the starting salary for a Specialist (P7) was 10,000 yuan/month, with a 1,000 yuan/month raise for each promotion. The starting salary for a Supervisor (P10) was 14,000 yuan/month, with a 2,000 yuan/month raise per promotion. And at the Manager level (P13), the starting salary jumped to 24,000 yuan/month, with a 4,000 yuan/month raise for each subsequent promotion.
This kind of compensation was unheard of in Qingzhou. At Ruijing Commerce, for example, an operations manager’s base salary was a mere 10,000 yuan/month, and supervisors like Yang Na only earned around 6,000.
But at Yanghe Commerce, the minimum starting salary for a position equivalent to his old one was 24,000 yuan/month. This was far more competitive than even the salaries at Futong Commerce.
This was a point he had deliberately stressed. The company would have very high expectations for every role, and you couldn’t expect people to stay motivated on a low salary. If they weren’t paid well, it would be impossible to enforce those high standards.
High salaries, on the other hand, would foster a sense of belonging. It would free employees from financial anxiety, allowing them to fully commit to their work. Coupled with the numerous opportunities for promotion—each with a substantial pay raise—it would make the staff easier to manage and ensure that all rules and regulations could be effectively implemented.
"Looks good. Let’s implement this for now."
"I can just imagine how happy they’ll be when they hear about this salary structure."
The "they" Yang Na mentioned were the sales associates she had selected from NLB. They were all people she had personally trained over the past couple of years. When they heard Yang Na was leaving Ruijing Commerce, many of them had already resigned, telling her they wanted to keep working for her and asking her to bring them along once she settled on her next venture.
Since they were only opening two stores, Yang Na had hand-picked an elite team. However, this team was "elite" only when compared to the standards at Ruijing Commerce.
They were still a long way from meeting the standards of Yanghe Commerce. Hopefully, they would be able to adapt. After all, with such high pay and great benefits, Yang Na also wanted to see her former subordinates grow and succeed along with the company.
He learned from Yang Na that the renovation team was scheduled to start work today. The materials had already been delivered to the storefront last night. ’I should go check it out in a little while,’ he thought.
"By the way, Aunt Zheng was just here looking for you," Yang Na added. "She seemed a bit disappointed you weren’t around and said she’d call you later."
’I have to admire her persistence,’ he thought. ’She texts me even more than Shen Meng does.’ Especially over the last few days, she had been saying her daughter was coming home and kept inviting him over for a meal.
’I just don’t get it. Her daughter just graduated from college, so what’s the big rush? Just how plain must she be for Aunt Zheng to be this desperate to market her?’
’She’s my landlady, and she’s been good to me, so I’ve always been gentle with my refusals. But clearly, putting it off isn’t working. I need to find some time to set things straight so she can find a new target and I don’t waste her daughter’s time.’
He and the girl with the WeChat ID "Lamb to the Slaughter" hadn’t exchanged a single message since adding each other. Yet every time Aunt Zheng asked, he’d lie and say they were talking constantly, just to get her to stop pestering him.
’It makes me wonder what her daughter is telling her. Is she lying to her mom, too?’
